The Minelab M8 DD Waterproof Coil is the specialist in the Manticore coil range: the one that turns your Manticore into a precision instrument for high-trash and tight-terrain detecting. Where the stock 11 in coil is built for versatility and coverage, the M8's 8 x 5.5 in elliptical footprint is built for accuracy in the places larger coils cannot work. If you are deciding which Manticore coil to buy first, our Manticore coils guide covers the M8, M9, M11 and M15 side by side.

    What's Included

    • Minelab M8 8 x 5.5 in Double-D search coil
    • Custom-fit protective skidplate (pre-fitted)
    • Coil mounting hardware (bolt and washers)

Compatible with the Minelab Manticore only.

Why the M8 Coil Belongs in a Manticore Kit

    • Target separation. The compact detection window passes fewer targets at once, letting the Manticore's Multi-IQ+ processor isolate individual signals buried in iron patches and modern trash.
    • Maneuverable. At 5.5 in wide, the M8 slides between rocks, roots and tight woodland brush without lifting off the ground. It fits gaps a round 11 in or 15 in coil cannot reach.
    • Light. The M8 weighs 400 g with skidplate, noticeably reducing swing weight on the Manticore for all-day endurance on long permissions.
    • Fully waterproof to 5 m (16 ft). Rated for full submersion, so it is equally at home on creek beds and rocky shorelines as it is in a park.

Where the M8 Coil Excels in the Field

Iron-Infested Relic Sites and Cellar Holes

When you are hunting colonial homesteads or Civil War camps blanketed in square nails and iron debris, the M8 earns its keep. Its small footprint means fewer iron targets crowd the coil window at the same time, giving the Manticore cleaner signal data to work with. Non-ferrous relics that a larger coil would mask as background noise come through as distinct, targetable signals. For a detailed look at how the M8 stacks up against the 9 in option in these conditions, see our Minelab Manticore M8 vs M9 coil guide.

    Gold Prospecting and Mineralized Ground

The M8's small elliptical shape and sensitivity to small targets make it a strong pairing with the Manticore's Goldfield modes. It picks up micro-jewelry and small gold in highly mineralized ground where larger coils generate too much ground noise to run at useful sensitivity levels. The DD pattern keeps ground rejection stable across variable mineral content, so you can push Sensitivity higher without losing threshold stability.

    Trashy Urban Parks

In parks loaded with foil, pull-tabs and bottle caps, the M8 lets you pick out coins without stacking multiple targets under the coil at the same time. Recovery Speed can be lowered slightly compared to your open-field settings because the coil itself is doing much of the separation work before the signal ever reaches the processor.

Does the Minelab M8 coil come with a coil cover?

Yes, the Minelab M8 coil comes with a coil cover: a custom-fit skidplate is already fitted when you open the box, along with the mounting bolt and washers. The skidplate protects the coil face from rocks and gravel and is what most hunters mean by a coil cover, so there is nothing extra to buy before your first hunt. Other Manticore accessories are in our Minelab Manticore collection.

    Answered by Dan P. · September 2026

Which detectors is the Minelab M8 coil compatible with?

The Minelab M8 coil is compatible with the Minelab Manticore only. The M-series coils (M8, M9, M11 and M15) use the Manticore's coil connector and Multi-IQ+ electronics, so the M8 will not fit or work on an Equinox, X-Terra or Vanquish, which use the EQX and V-series coils instead. If you own one of those detectors, our metal detector search coils collection lists the matching options.

    Answered by John W. · September 2026

When should I use the Minelab M8 coil instead of the stock 11 in coil?

Use the Minelab M8 coil instead of the stock 11 in coil when separation matters more than coverage: iron-choked cellar holes, trashy tot lots, and tight brush or rocky ground where a wide coil cannot stay flat. Its 8 x 5.5 in window passes fewer targets at once, and at 400 g it lightens the swing. Keep the 11 in coil for open fields and beaches where coverage per sweep wins. The Minelab M9 9 in round coil is the middle option.
