Nokta's latest Magnetar 9000 firmware is System Software V3.04.04, released September 22, 2026. It improves ground balancing and stability in mineralized soil, and you install it by copying one .hex file to the detector over USB, then doing a factory reset.
The whole job takes a few minutes at a computer. Below is what changed, the official download, and each step with Nokta's photos so you can follow along with your Magnetar 9000 on the bench.
What's New in Magnetar 9000 V3.04.04
Nokta lists two changes in this release:
- Ground balancing and stability: Nokta says both have been enhanced for more precise ground compensation, smoother operation, and improved performance across challenging and highly mineralized soils.
- Bug fixes: Minor bugs have been fixed.
That first item is the one that matters in the field. Gold tends to sit in the worst ground there is: iron-rich red dirt, black sand, and hot rocks that all produce signals of their own. A pulse induction machine earns its keep by cancelling that ground out, and the cleaner it does so, the easier it is to hear a faint target under the noise. A steadier threshold also means less fatigue over a long day of gold prospecting.
Download the Official Magnetar 9000 Firmware
Get the file straight from Nokta so you know it is the genuine release:
Download Magnetar 9000 System Software V3.04.04 (.zip)
The download is a .zip folder. The detector only reads the .hex file inside it, so you will extract that file before copying anything over.
Before You Start
- Charge the battery to at least 50%.
- Keep the search coil connected to the detector for the entire update.
- Write down your current settings. The factory reset at the end returns the detector to its defaults.
- Have the USB cable and a computer ready.
How to Update the Nokta Magnetar 9000: Step by Step
Step 1: Check the battery
Make sure the detector's battery is at least 50% charged before you begin. If it is lower, charge it first.
Step 2: Connect the detector to your computer
Plug one end of the USB cable into the detector and the other end into your computer.
Step 3: Look for the lock icon and the MAGNETAR drive
A lock icon appears on the detector's screen. On your computer, the detector shows up as a removable USB drive named MAGNETAR.
Step 4: Extract the .hex file and copy it over
Open the .zip you downloaded and extract the .hex file. Copy that .hex file onto the MAGNETAR drive. Do not rename it, and do not copy the .zip itself.
Step 5: Disconnect the USB cable
Once the file has finished copying, unplug the USB cable from the computer. The update starts on its own.
Step 6: Let the detector shut itself down
When the update is finished, the detector powers off by itself. Leave the battery in place the whole time.
Don't Skip the Factory Reset
Nokta is emphatic about this one: after the update completes, perform a factory reset on the Magnetar 9000. A reset clears out settings saved under the old software so the new version starts from clean defaults. Your owner's manual covers where to find the reset option.
After the reset, re-enter the settings you wrote down and ground balance again at your site before you start hunting. Since this release changes how the detector handles ground, treat your first outing as a fresh setup instead of assuming your old numbers still apply.
Troubleshooting the Update
- The update did not start. The most common cause is copying the .zip instead of the extracted .hex file. Only the .hex file works, and it has to keep its original file name.
- You copied the wrong file. No harm done. Nokta says that if an incompatible file is loaded, you can simply disconnect the cable and the detector keeps running its current software.
- You changed your mind. You can unplug the cable without copying anything. The detector returns to its normal screen.
- The coil is off. Reattach it. Nokta requires the search coil to be connected during the update.
Magnetar 9000 Update FAQ
What is the latest firmware for the Nokta Magnetar 9000?
The current release is System Software V3.04.04, dated September 22, 2026. It improves ground balancing and stability and fixes minor bugs.
How do I update the Nokta Magnetar 9000?
Connect the detector to a computer by USB, copy the extracted .hex file to the drive named MAGNETAR, then unplug the cable. The update runs automatically and the detector shuts off when it is done.
Do I need to factory reset the Magnetar 9000 after updating?
Yes. Nokta marks the factory reset as very important and repeats it throughout its instructions. Note your settings before you update so you can restore them afterward.
Why won't my Magnetar 9000 update start?
Check that you copied the .hex file and not the .zip, that the file name is unchanged, that the battery is at 50% or higher, and that the search coil is connected.
Can a bad file damage the Magnetar 9000?
According to Nokta, an incompatible file will not install. Disconnect the cable and the detector continues working on the software version it already has.
Does the search coil need to be attached during the update?
