Teknetics Gamma 6000 Overview
The Teknetics Gamma 6000 runs a single 7.8 kHz VLF frequency. Discrimination mode needs coil motion and shows a two-digit target ID from 10 to 99, grouped into eight categories from Iron (10 to 39) to Quarter (85 to 99), with notch to accept or reject each category. All Metal mode works like a fast autotune mode, and Pinpoint works with the coil held still. Ground Grab balances automatically as you pump the coil over the ground, and manual ground balance covers ground where automatic balance cannot lock on. A scale on the display shows the amount of magnetic mineralization, and the ground setting number shows its type. Sensitivity runs from 5 to 99. With the 11 inch DD coil and battery it weighs 2 lb 11 oz (1.22 kg), and it runs 20 to 25 hours on one 9V alkaline battery. First Texas lists a 2-year limited warranty. Gamma 6000 vs. Omega 8500: Which Should You Buy?
The Gamma 6000 and the Omega 8500 share Ground Grab plus manual ground balance, a numeric target ID with eight categories and notch, a mineralization display, the Greek series coils and the same 9V battery life. The Omega 8500 runs at 7.69 kHz and adds an adjustable backlight, settings memory and 5 tone settings plus VCO, with settings 4 and 5 adding a medium tone. The Gamma 6000 lets you set 1 to 4 audio tones.
If you hunt in daylight and want ground control without extra settings, we recommend the Gamma 6000. If you hunt at dawn or dusk, or want your settings saved between hunts, step up to the Omega 8500.

Key Features That Matter in the Field
Ground balance is the reason to choose the Gamma 6000 over an entry detector. Ground Grab balances when you pump the coil up and down over clean ground. The manual notes that automatic balance is not possible where the ground value reads below 40, and it recommends manual balance for gold prospecting, wet saltwater beaches and sites with a lot of metal trash. Watch the mineralization scale: when it climbs from L toward H, re-balance or lower sensitivity to steady the threshold.
The target ID number tells you more than the tone. Iron reads 10 to 39, foil 40 to 54, nickel 55 to 59, pull tabs 60 to 64, screw caps 65 to 74, zinc 75 to 79, dimes 80 to 84 and quarters 85 to 99. Notch lets you reject a single category, such as pull tabs, without losing nickels on one side and zinc pennies on the other. Audio pitch rises as the signal gets stronger, and the depth indicator, accurate for coin-sized objects, shows 0 to 3 inch, 3 to 6 inch or over 6 inch.
Where the Gamma 6000 Works Best and Its Limits
The Gamma 6000 is a general-purpose detector for coin shooting, relic hunting and jewelry, the uses First Texas lists for it. Parks, yards, old home sites and farm fields suit it, and the 11 inch DD coil covers more ground per sweep than a smaller coil. Keep the control box dry: First Texas lists it as not weatherproof, and the manual offers a face rain cover for wet weather. With no backlight, the display is harder to read at dawn and dusk. As a single-frequency VLF it is not the tool for wet salt sand or hot goldfield ground, where we recommend a multi-frequency or pulse induction detector. Add a pinpointer for faster recovery.
Coils and Accessories That Fit the Gamma 6000
The Gamma 6000 takes the Teknetics Greek series coils. Our listings show these fit it: the Teknetics 11 inch DD elliptical coil (a spare for the one on our Gamma 6000), the Teknetics 5 inch round DD coil for tight, trashy spots, the CORS Detonation 13 x 14 inch DD, the CORS Fire 15 inch DD and the Mars Discovery 13 inch DD. Coils made for the original Teknetics Eurotek do not fit the Gamma 6000. We recommend the 5 inch coil for iron-heavy house sites and the larger coils for open fields. The 26.5 inch replacement lower rod (TUBE5X) fits the Gamma 6000, and the digital Gamma 6000 manual covers every setting.
