Minelab GO-FIND 22 Metal Detector

The Minelab GO-FIND 22 is a lightweight, foldable metal detector built for new hobbyists and casual hunters who want results without a steep learning curve. This collection brings together the detector, compatible accessories, and replacement parts for parks, dry sand beaches, schoolyards, and backyards. The GO-FIND 22 ships ready to swing: collapsible shaft, audio target ID, an icon-based display that separates trash from treasure, and AA battery power for easy field swaps. Every detector we ship is backed by Minelab's 2-year factory warranty, and orders over $99 ship free in the contiguous US.

Why the GO-FIND 22 Belongs in a Beginner's Hand

We get a lot of first-time detectorists asking for a machine that turns on, finds coins, and does not punish them for missing a setting. The GO-FIND 22 was designed around exactly that user. Minelab built the GO-FIND series after watching new hobbyists abandon the hobby because their first detector buried them in menus and false signals. The 22 strips the experience down to a small set of controls, two preset find modes (All-Metal and Reject Iron), and an icon-based target display, then leans on automatic ground balance and Minelab's audio engineering to deliver clean target tones in typical park and yard soil. We have handed this detector to ten-year-olds and seventy-year-olds in the same afternoon, and watched both walk away with finds.

The trade we accept for that simplicity is feature depth. There is no manual ground balance, no numerical target ID, and no notch discrimination on this model. For parks, beaches above the surf line, sandboxes, schoolyards, and the patch of grass behind the house, those omissions do not matter. For deep relic hunting in iron-heavy colonial sites or saltwater surf, you want a different machine, and we will tell you when to size up.

Specs and Features That Matter in the Field

Specs in isolation can be misleading, so we want to highlight the GO-FIND 22 features that actually change your day on the dirt:

  • Weight: 2.2 lb (1.0 kg) assembled. Children and detectorists with shoulder issues can swing this rig for hours without a harness.
  • Foldable shaft: Collapses to roughly 22 inches and extends to about 51 inches. Fits in a daypack, a carry-on, or behind a car seat. Ideal for travel hunting.
  • 8-inch waterproof search coil: The coil itself can be dunked, but the control box is not submersible. Wet sand and shallow puddles are fine; surf hunting is not.
  • Icon-based target ID: Visual icons flash to indicate the likely target type, from iron and foil through to coins and jewelry. No numeric target ID number to interpret.
  • Audio target ID: Low tone for iron, high tone for coins and precious metals, so you can decide if a signal is worth digging before you commit.
  • Two preset find modes: All-Metal for full coverage, Reject Iron for cleaner park and yard hunting. Switch with a single button.
  • Three sensitivity levels and automatic ground balance: A simple sensitivity selector handles different soils, and the detector compensates for ground mineralization without input.
  • 4 AA batteries: Around 12 to 15 hours of runtime depending on volume and use. We recommend lithium AAs for cold weather and long hunts.
  • LED indicator light: A built-in light helps you locate small targets after pinpointing, especially in low light.

Where the GO-FIND 22 Performs Best

Match the machine to the hunt and you will find more. The GO-FIND 22 lives in its element across these sites:

  • City and neighborhood parks: Light trash, moderate mineralization, and modern coins sitting within the detector's effective depth range. We put hundreds of clad coins in the pouch from local parks every season using this model.
  • Dry sand beaches and tot lots: Lost jewelry, coins, and toys hide just under the surface. The light weight matters when you are doing grid sweeps over a volleyball court.
  • Backyards and old homesteads: Buttons, coins, and small relics tend to be shallow. The 22 will not chase deep iron, which keeps you on productive targets.
  • Schoolyards and athletic fields: High traffic equals dropped coins, rings, and watches. Get permission, then hit the bleachers and the goal mouths.
  • Travel and vacation hunting: The collapsed length means no checked-bag struggle and no reason to leave the detector at home.

If you are planning to hunt saltwater surf, deep colonial cellar holes, or gold-bearing washes, we will steer you toward a different platform. The Equinox 700 or 900 is IP68-rated to 5 meters and handles wet salt and mineralized ground that the GO-FIND 22 was not built to fight, and the GPX 6000 is the tool for serious nugget work.

For most first-year detectorists, we recommend the GO-FIND 22 as the right balance of capability and simplicity. If the budget allows and the user already knows they want to grow into the hobby, the 44 or 66 will hold their interest longer thanks to the larger coil, more search modes, and Bluetooth app integration.

For most first-year detectorists, the 22 hits the right balance of capability and simplicity. If your budget allows and you know you want to grow into the hobby, the 44 or 66 will hold your interest longer.

Getting Started With Your GO-FIND 22

A few tips from our years on the dirt to shorten your learning curve:

  1. Air-test before you swing. Wave a coin, a nail, and a foil scrap past the coil outdoors so you learn the audio tones and icons cold. Your dig-to-find ratio improves immediately.
  2. Slow your swing. Two to three seconds per pass, coil low and parallel to the ground. New detectorists almost always swing too fast.
  3. Overlap your sweeps. Move forward by one third of the coil width, not a full coil width. Skipped strips equal missed targets.
  4. Pinpoint by X-ing. Once you get a signal, sweep across it from a second angle to find the spot where both passes peak. That intersection is your dig point.
  5. Carry a pinpointer. A handheld unit like a Pinpointer cuts recovery time in half. We bundle the GO-FIND 22 with the Pro-Find 40 because the pairing genuinely makes new detectorists better.
  6. Get permission and fill your holes. Private property always requires consent, and a clean plug protects access for everyone who comes after you.

Why Buy the GO-FIND 22 From Serious Detecting

We are an authorized US Minelab dealer, and that distinction matters. Buying from a gray-market seller or an unauthorized online listing can void your warranty and cut you off from Minelab's support and firmware channels. Order from us and you get the full 2-year factory warranty, real human support from people who run these detectors in the field, and access to the accessory ecosystem that turns a starter detector into a complete kit. We ship most orders the same day if placed before our cutoff, and orders over $99 ship free within the contiguous US.

Have a question before you buy? Call or message us. We would rather spend ten minutes pointing you to the right detector than sell you the wrong one and process a return. If you are still narrowing your shortlist, our broader metal detectors collection and the full Minelab lineup are a click away.
