Minelab VANQUISH 460 Metal Detector Overview

The Minelab VANQUISH 460 runs Multi-IQ, transmitting on multiple frequencies at once in every search mode, so there is no frequency to pick. Onboard you get Park, Field and Beach modes, a User Profile and an All Metal button, ten sensitivity levels, 30 discrimination segments across 119 Target IDs from -19 to 99, three Iron Bias levels, three target tones (Low, Mid, High), ten volume levels, pinpoint, a 5-level depth indicator and automatic noise cancel. It also has a red LED display backlight, keypad backlight, flashlight and handgrip vibration. The whole detector, control box and coil, is IP68 rated to 5 m (16 ft). The VANQUISH 460 weighs 1.16 kg (2.6 lb), extends to 142 cm (56 inch) and collapses to 79 cm (31 inch), and its built-in lithium-ion battery runs up to 10 hours and charges through a magnetic USB connector. The V10X 10 x 7 inch Double-D coil and wired headphones come in the box, and Minelab covers the control box and coil for 3 years.

If you are comparing with the VANQUISH 440, the VANQUISH 460 is IP68 rated to 5 m (16 ft) as a whole detector, control box and coil, and has a built-in rechargeable battery. Our VANQUISH 460 field test and our post on why the VANQUISH 460 feels like the upgrade the line needed cover it in more depth.

VANQUISH 460 vs. VANQUISH 560: Which Should You Buy?

The VANQUISH 460 and the VANQUISH 560 share Multi-IQ, Park, Field and Beach modes with a User Profile, 30 discrimination segments, ten sensitivity levels, Bluetooth LE Audio (LC3), the backlight, flashlight and vibration, wired headphones in the box and the IP68 16-foot rating. The VANQUISH 560 adds five target tones instead of three, a fourth Iron Bias level, ferrous volume adjustable in 10 levels and the larger V12X 12 x 9 inch coil, and it weighs 1.26 kg (2.8 lb) against 1.16 kg (2.6 lb).

If you hunt parks, beaches and the occasional old homesite and want adjustable discrimination and Iron Bias, we recommend the VANQUISH 460. If you spend long days on iron-heavy permissions and want to hear more target categories and turn iron down rather than reject it, step up to the VANQUISH 560. For simple park and beach hunting with three preset modes, the VANQUISH 360 keeps the same Multi-IQ engine and waterproofing.

VANQUISH 460, Best For:

  • Park and beach hunters who want to accept or reject individual discrimination segments
  • Older parks and homesites where three Iron Bias levels help with nails and bottle caps
  • Hunters who want Bluetooth LE Audio, vibration and a backlit display at the middle of the series
  • Detectorists who prefer the V10X 10 x 7 inch coil for trashy, tight ground

VANQUISH 560, Best For:

  • Relic hunters on iron-heavy homesites who want adjustable ferrous volume
  • Hunters who want five target tones to sort targets by ear
  • Open fields and beaches where the V12X 12 x 9 inch coil covers more ground per swing
  • Buyers who want two coils and wireless earbuds in one box with the VANQUISH 560 PRO-PACK

Key Features That Matter in the Field

Field mode is Minelab's mode for fields and relic sites, with a faster recovery speed and a lower Iron Bias than Park, for small relics among iron trash. Park mode suits parks with modern trash and freshwater, and Beach mode is built for salt beaches, including underwater, and tracks the ground automatically. The User Profile keeps your own changes after the detector is switched off.

Iron Bias decides how the detector treats targets with a mixed iron and non-ferrous response, such as a coin next to a nail. A higher level rejects more iron but raises the risk of passing over a good target; a lower level means digging more iron. With 30 segments you can accept or reject parts of the Target ID range, keeping in mind that gold jewelry and aluminum trash can read alike, so we keep discrimination fairly open on swimming beaches. Ground balance is user-started on the VANQUISH 460, and Beach mode tracks the ground on its own.

Wireless audio uses Bluetooth LE Audio with the LC3 codec only, so standard Bluetooth headphones are not compatible; Minelab's ML60 earbuds are made for it. Wired headphones use the 3.5 mm (1/8 inch) socket, and handgrip vibration helps in surf or wind.

Where the Minelab VANQUISH 460 Performs Best

The VANQUISH 460 earns its place in older parks, schoolyards, homesites and farm fields where adjustable Iron Bias and accept or reject discrimination pay off, and on freshwater and ocean beaches, where the IP68 5 m (16 ft) rating lets you work wet sand and shallow water. For underwater audio, Minelab specifies its 3.5 mm waterproof headphones, and the detector should not go underwater while charging.

The limits are the same as the rest of the series. Severe black sand, heavy mineralization and electrical interference can still affect it, and for demanding saltwater or more adjustment we would also look at the EQUINOX 900. The VANQUISH 460 finds gold jewelry, but it has no gold mode; see our gold detectors for natural gold.

Coils and Accessories That Fit the Minelab VANQUISH 460

The Minelab VANQUISH 460 comes with the V10X 10 x 7 inch elliptical Double-D coil and its skidplate. Minelab lists six coils for the VANQUISH 60 Series: the V8X 8 x 5 inch, V10X 10 x 7 inch and V12X 12 x 9 inch elliptical Double-D coils, and the EQX 06 6 inch, EQX 11 11 inch and EQX 15 15 x 12 inch Double-D coils. The first-generation V8, V10 and V12 coils are not on Minelab's list for the 60 Series. We recommend the V8X for tight, iron-heavy spots and the V12X for open fields and beaches. Each Minelab coil comes with its coil cover, and replacement V8, V10 and V12 skidplates are in this collection.

The VANQUISH 460 collection also holds the magnetic USB-C charging cable, battery assembly, armrest, arm strap and headphone cap for the VANQUISH 60 Series, Coiltek NOX coils, Minelab wired headphones and the Minelab Detector Backpack. VANQUISH 460 bundles add a PRO-FIND 15, 35 or 40 pinpointer, the Minelab Adventure Pack or a carry bag.

Is the Minelab VANQUISH 460 waterproof?

Yes, the Minelab VANQUISH 460 is waterproof: Minelab rates the whole detector IP68 and submersible to 5 m (16 ft). That covers freshwater beaches, streams, shallow water and rain. Do not take it underwater while it is charging or running from a power bank, and use Minelab's 3.5 mm waterproof headphones for underwater detecting. See our waterproof metal detectors.

What comes in the box with the Minelab VANQUISH 460?

What comes in the box with the Minelab VANQUISH 460, according to Minelab, is the detector, the V10X 10 x 7 inch Double-D coil with skid plate, an armrest with strap, wired 3.5 mm headphones, a USB-C magnetic charging cable and a Getting Started Guide. Our bundles add pinpointers, a carry bag or the Minelab Adventure Pack. Compare packages in our Minelab metal detectors.

Is the Minelab VANQUISH 460 good for relic hunting in iron-heavy ground?

Yes, the Minelab VANQUISH 460 is good for occasional relic hunting in iron-heavy ground. Minelab designed Field mode for unmasking targets among dense iron trash, with a higher recovery speed and a lower Iron Bias, and the 460 adds ground balance and 30 discrimination segments. In our experience the V10X coil helps around scattered debris, but no setting separates every coin from nearby iron. See our treasure and relic metal detectors.
