Minelab GO-FIND 66 Metal Detector Overview

The Minelab GO-FIND 66 runs VFLEX, Minelab's single-frequency VLF technology, at 8 kHz. It has four Find modes (Non-Ferrous, Jewelry and Coins, Higher Value Coins, All Metal), Pinpoint, five sensitivity levels, five volume levels and four target tones. A monochrome LCD with white display and keypad backlight shows four Find icons and a 3-level depth indicator, and five Treasure View LEDs light red for iron and green for non-iron targets. Audio plays through the built-in speaker, the supplied wired earbuds on the 3.5 mm (1/8 inch) socket, or Bluetooth through the GO-FIND app. The 10 inch rectangular Monoloop coil is hard-wired to the shaft and waterproof to 1 m (3.3 ft); the control box is not waterproof. The GO-FIND 66 weighs 1.1 kg (2.3 lb), extends to 130.5 cm (51.4 inch), collapses to 55.5 cm (21.9 inch), runs on four AA batteries and carries Minelab's 2-year warranty.

GO-FIND 66 vs. GO-FIND 44: Which Should You Buy?

Both detectors share the 10 inch waterproof coil, the 1.1 kg (2.3 lb) weight, Pinpoint, Treasure View LEDs, the white backlight, the 3-level depth indicator and Bluetooth 4.0 with the GO-FIND app. Over the GO-FIND 44, the GO-FIND 66 adds the Higher Value Coins Find mode, a fourth tone (Mid 2) for higher-value metals, a fifth sensitivity level and free access to Minelab's Pro App, and Minelab packs a digging shovel and wired earbuds in its box.

If you want the most settings the GO-FIND series offers and plan to hunt coins in parks often, we recommend the GO-FIND 66. If Pinpoint, the backlight and the app are what you need, the GO-FIND 44 covers them with one mode, one tone and one sensitivity level fewer.

Key Features That Matter in the Field

The four tones sort targets by ear. Minelab's guide lists low for iron such as nails, Mid 1 for less valuable metals, Mid 2 for higher-value metals and high for silver and copper. Treasure View backs that up visually, with red LEDs for iron and green for non-iron metal. Find modes accept or reject groups of metal objects; we recommend Higher Value Coins in trashy parks, Jewelry and Coins at swimming areas, and All Metal on clean ground.

Pinpoint finds the exact location of a target. With Pinpoint on, the LEDs show orange and light toward the center as the coil gets closer, so you can dig a smaller plug, and the depth indicator shows whether the target is shallow, medium or deep. Minelab names Easy-Trak automatic ground tracking on the GO-FIND 66, so there is no manual ground balance to learn. Sensitivity has five levels: raise it for more depth and lower it when the detector gets noisy or gives false signals.

Bluetooth 4.0 connects the GO-FIND 66 to the GO-FIND app, which Minelab says shows detector information, helps identify common coins and records finds with Google Maps. The GO-FIND 44 and 66 both work with the free GO-FIND app, and the GO-FIND 66 is the only model that gets the Pro App free. The apps need iOS 8 or Android 4.3 or later.

Where the Minelab GO-FIND 66 Performs Best

Parks, school grounds (with permission), yards and beaches are where the GO-FIND 66 makes the most sense, and the backlight keeps it usable at dusk. The coil is waterproof to 1 m (3.3 ft), so wet sand, shorelines and shallow streams are in range. Minelab says to keep the handle and control screen out of water and not to lift the coil higher than the handle when searching in water.

The limits are the single 8 kHz frequency and the dry control box. For deep water or regular saltwater hunting, we recommend a fully waterproof detector. For a detector you can take fully underwater, the VANQUISH 360 runs Multi-IQ simultaneous multi-frequency and is waterproof to 5 m (16 ft), control box and coil.

Coil and Accessories That Fit the Minelab GO-FIND 66

The Minelab GO-FIND 66 comes with its 10 inch rectangular Monoloop coil hard-wired to the shaft, wired earbuds, a Minelab digging shovel and two camouflage stickers. Minelab lists no optional coils for the GO-FIND series, so the coil stays with the detector for its life. GO-FIND 66 packages and bundles in this collection add a Minelab PRO-FIND 15 or PRO-FIND 35 pinpointer, a carry bag, or gloves and a carry bag.
