Minelab VANQUISH 540 Metal Detector Overview
The Minelab VANQUISH 540 is the top model of the VANQUISH 40 Series. It runs Multi-IQ, transmitting on multiple frequencies at once, so there is no frequency to pick. Onboard you get Coin, Relic, Jewelry and Custom modes with an All Metal shortcut, ten sensitivity levels, 25 discrimination segments across Target IDs from -9 to 40, Iron Bias High (default) or Low, five target tones, ten volume levels, ferrous volume adjustable in 10 levels, a pinpoint mode, a 5-level depth indicator and automatic noise cancel. The monochrome display has a red backlight, and wireless audio uses Bluetooth aptX Low Latency.
The V12 12 x 9 inch Double-D coil is waterproof to 1 m (3.3 ft); the control box is water resistant with its rain cover attached. The VANQUISH 540 weighs 1.3 kg (2.8 lb) with batteries, extends to 145 cm (57 inch) and collapses to 76 cm (30 inch). Four AA NiMH rechargeable batteries and a 4-way USB charger come in the box; Minelab rates NiMH cells at about 11 hours. The standard VANQUISH 540 box has wired headphones; the PRO-PACK comes with ML 80 Bluetooth headphones instead, and Minelab covers the control box and coil for 3 years. Our VANQUISH 440 and 540 Target ID guide explains how the numbers read in the field.
VANQUISH 540 vs. VANQUISH 560: Which Should You Buy?
The VANQUISH 540 and the VANQUISH 560 both run Multi-IQ, have ten sensitivity levels, five target tones, ferrous volume adjustable in 10 levels, a backlit display, wireless audio and a 12 x 9 inch Double-D coil. The VANQUISH 560 adds IP68 waterproofing to 5 m (16 ft) for the whole detector, control box and coil, a built-in lithium-ion battery that runs up to 10 hours, 30 discrimination segments, four Iron Bias levels, a flashlight and handgrip vibration, with Park, Field and Beach modes, a User Profile, the -19 to 99 Target ID scale and Bluetooth LE Audio (LC3).
If you hunt parks, fields and beaches from the shore, want AA batteries you can swap in the field and already own or want aptX Low Latency headphones such as the ML 80, we recommend the VANQUISH 540. If you want to take the whole detector into the water, prefer a built-in battery or want vibration and a flashlight, look at the VANQUISH 560. Our post on the VANQUISH 440 vs. 540 and the newer 460 and 560 goes through both generations.
VANQUISH 540, Best For:
- Hunters who want 25 discrimination segments and a Custom mode for their own pattern
- Older parks and homesites where Iron Bias Low and adjustable ferrous volume help among iron
- Open fields and beaches where the V12 12 x 9 inch coil covers more ground per swing
- Buyers who want two coils and ML 80 Bluetooth headphones in one box with the VANQUISH 540 PRO-PACK
VANQUISH 560, Best For:
- Beach and shallow water hunters who want the whole detector waterproof to 5 m (16 ft)
- Hunters who want a built-in rechargeable battery instead of AA cells
- Relic hunters who want four Iron Bias levels and a dedicated Field mode
- Detectorists who want handgrip vibration and a flashlight for low light
Key Features That Matter in the Field
Coin mode is Minelab's mode for common modern coins while ignoring trash in parks and at the beach. Jewelry mode balances separation and depth for lost rings and chains. Relic mode has the best depth of the four, with slightly reduced separation, for fields and woods. Custom mode stores a favorite mode with your own discrimination pattern, and the All Metal shortcut opens discrimination so you hear every target.
Iron Bias decides how the detector treats large or complex iron. High is the default and classes more of it as iron; Low lets the VANQUISH 540 better identify coins among dense ferrous trash, at the cost of digging more iron. Iron Bias returns to High each time you switch on. Ferrous volume lets you turn iron grunts down instead of rejecting them, so you still hear where the iron is. Gold jewelry and aluminum trash can read alike, so we keep discrimination fairly open on swimming beaches.
Where the Minelab VANQUISH 540 Performs Best
Open parks, sports fields, farm fields and beaches are where the V12 coil earns its place. The coil can go under water to 1 m (3.3 ft), so you can sweep wet sand and the shallows, but the control box is water resistant only: keep it out of the water and use the rain cover in wet weather. The red backlight helps at dawn, dusk and under trees.
The limits are water depth, very tight trash and gold. For wading deeper than the coil, the VANQUISH 560 is the detector to look at. In tight, trashy spots we recommend the smaller V8 coil from the PRO-PACK. The VANQUISH 540 finds gold jewelry, but it has no gold mode; see our gold detectors for natural gold.
Coils and Accessories That Fit the Minelab VANQUISH 540
The Minelab VANQUISH 540 PRO-PACK comes with the V12 12 x 9 inch and V8 8 x 5 inch elliptical Double-D coils with their skidplates and Minelab ML 80 Bluetooth headphones. Minelab lists three coils for the VANQUISH 40 Series: the V8 8 x 5 inch, V10 10 x 7 inch and V12 12 x 9 inch elliptical Double-D coils. Minelab does not list the V8X, V10X or V12X for the 40 Series. Each Minelab coil comes with its coil cover, and replacement V8, V10 and V12 skidplates are in this collection.
Here you will also find the Minelab ML 80 wireless headphones, Minelab wired headphones, the Minelab VANQUISH Environmental Cover for the control box, the Minelab AA NiMH battery pack and 4 AA charger, the lower shaft, arm strap and VANQUISH carry bag. VANQUISH 540 PRO-PACK bundles add a PRO-FIND 20 or PRO-FIND 40 pinpointer, and one adds a carry bag.
VANQUISH 340 vs. VANQUISH 440 vs. VANQUISH 540 Comparison
All three VANQUISH 40 Series detectors run Multi-IQ, share the -9 to 40 Target ID scale, use a coil waterproof to 1 m (3.3 ft) on a water resistant control box and run on four AA batteries. They differ in search modes, discrimination, iron control, audio, display and the coil in the box.
