OKM Evolution NTX Metal Detector

The OKM Evolution NTX is a German-built 3D ground scanner with a VLF search coil, for treasure hunters and relic searchers who want to map a suspected spot and judge a target's position, size and depth before they dig. It does two jobs: a Live Sound mode that works as a VLF metal detector for shallow coins, rings and jewelry, and a 3D Scan mode that records a measured grid for OKM's Visualizer 3D Studio software on the included Windows notebook.

OKM places the Evolution NTX in its entry-level 3D ground scanner group. Three things decide whether it fits you: it has its own color touchscreen instead of running from a phone, the shaft adjusts to your height, and it is not waterproof, so it is a dry-ground instrument.

What the OKM Evolution NTX Does

The OKM Evolution NTX combines OKM's ground scan sensor technology with a VLF search coil in one control unit. OKM gives it two operating modes. Live Sound turns on the VLF metal detector for shallow metal objects such as coins, rings and jewelry, with an audio signal and a simple graphical indication on the screen. 3D Scan records a measured grid into the unit's memory; you then open the scan in Visualizer 3D Studio, which shows buried objects in color as a 3D image so you can judge position, size and depth before digging.

OKM does not publish a rated detection depth for the Evolution NTX. Its product page says customers have found objects down to 8 m (26 ft). Treat that as a manufacturer claim based on customer finds: real depth depends on the size of the target, the ground, and how carefully the grid is walked. Our guide to how deep metal detectors go explains why depth figures vary so much.

What Comes in the Evolution NTX Kit

As of October 2026, OKM lists one standard Evolution NTX configuration: the control unit, a pre-configured Windows notebook, a USB flash drive with Visualizer 3D Studio Standard Edition, Bluetooth headphones with charging cable, a charger with cable, a travel adapter set, a waterproof and shock-resistant protector case, and a quick start guide. OKM notes the delivery scope can change with technical revisions, so the Evolution NTX listing is where we keep the current contents.

OKM lists the control unit at about 1.5 kg (3.3 lb), with an adjustable length of 540 to 810 mm (about 21 to 32 inches), a 3.5 inch color touchscreen, 4 GB of scan memory, a built-in speaker and Bluetooth audio. It runs on a rechargeable internal battery; OKM does not publish a runtime figure. OKM covers it with a 2-year guarantee.

Coils, Software and Accessories for the Evolution NTX

As of October 2026, OKM lists no interchangeable search coils or extra probes for the Evolution NTX. The VLF coil and the scan sensor are part of the unit, so there is no coil upgrade path the way there is on a conventional detector. Do not assume coils or probes from other OKM models fit.

The included Visualizer 3D Studio Standard Edition is enough to read your scans. OKM sells higher editions of Visualizer 3D Studio separately. If you would rather use your own computer than the included notebook, OKM's minimum is Windows 10, a 1920 x 1080 display, 2 GB of RAM and a graphics card with 1 GB of RAM and OpenGL 3.3.

Where the Evolution NTX Fits

The Evolution NTX suits a searcher who already has a spot in mind, such as an old homestead, a ruin or a reported cache location, and wants an image of it before excavating. OKM rates it for dry conditions only: not waterproof, 5 to 75 percent air humidity, and operating temperatures of 14 to 140 F (-10 to 60 C). Only the transport case is waterproof.

When we set up a customer with a 3D scanner, the part that takes practice is not the software, it is walking the grid: the same line spacing, the same sensor height and the same pace on every pass. A sloppy grid gives a messy image no matter which scanner made it.

For covering parks, fields and beaches for scattered coins and jewelry, a conventional metal detector is lighter, faster and far less money. The Live Sound mode on the Evolution NTX is there to check shallow signals, not to replace a dedicated coin machine.

Other OKM Scanners by What You Need

Phone control, no VLF mode: the Fusion Light in the OKM Fusion series runs from an Android app and pairs 3D Ground Scan with a Magnetometer mode.

A pinpointer mode alongside the scan: the OKM Rover series adds Pinpointer and Magnetometer modes to 3D Ground Scan; OKM lists the Rover UC as controlled from an Android smartwatch and the Rover C4 with its own touchscreen.

More sensors in one kit: the OKM eXp 5500 adds Magnetometer and VLF metal detection modes with a Super Sensor and a 14 x 10 inch VLF search coil.

Large areas or voids behind walls: the OKM Delta Ranger adds long-range and thermal imaging modes.

Targets that are not metal: for structures and cavities, the OKM Gepard GPR ground-penetrating radar.

Can the OKM Evolution NTX be used as a regular metal detector?

Yes, the OKM Evolution NTX can be used as a metal detector for shallow targets: its Live Sound mode turns on the built-in VLF metal detector for coins, rings and jewelry near the surface, with an audio signal and a simple graphical indication on the screen. Its main job is the 3D Scan mode, which maps a measured grid so you can judge a target before digging. If most of your detecting is covering parks, fields and beaches for scattered small finds, a conventional metal detector is lighter and faster for that work.

How deep can the OKM Evolution NTX detect?

OKM does not publish a rated detection depth for the Evolution NTX; its product page says customers have found objects down to 8 m (26 ft). That figure comes from customer finds, so real depth depends on the size of the target, the ground and how carefully the scan grid is walked. Small objects such as single coins are found much shallower than large objects. Our guide to how deep metal detectors go explains what changes detection depth.

Do I need my own computer to use the OKM Evolution NTX?

No, you do not need your own computer for the OKM Evolution NTX: OKM includes a pre-configured Windows notebook and a USB flash drive with Visualizer 3D Studio Standard Edition, which is the software that turns a 3D scan into an image. If you prefer to use your own computer, OKM's minimum is Windows 10, a 1920 x 1080 display, 2 GB of RAM and a graphics card with 1 GB of RAM and OpenGL 3.3. Higher editions of Visualizer 3D Studio are sold separately by OKM. Other OKM ground scanners, such as the Delta Ranger and Gepard GPR, also ship with Visualizer 3D Studio.

Is the OKM Evolution NTX waterproof?

No, the OKM Evolution NTX is not waterproof: OKM lists the control unit as not waterproof and rates it for 5 to 75 percent air humidity and 14 to 140 F (-10 to 60 C). Use it on dry ground and pack it away in rain. The protector case in the kit is waterproof and shock-resistant, but it is for transport and storage. Detectors built to go in the water are in our waterproof metal detectors collection.
