Nokta Legend 2 vs Minelab MANTICORE: Which Should You Buy?

Nokta Legend 2 vs Minelab MANTICORE: Which Should You Buy?

For most hunters buying their first serious multi-frequency detector, the Nokta Legend 2 is the better buy: it costs less, comes with two coils (the LD28 11 inch and LD21 8 x 5.5 inch) plus wireless headphones, and weighs 2.6 lb (1.2 kg) with the coil. The Minelab MANTICORE earns its higher price for experienced detectorists on iron-heavy ground who will use its 2D ID map and custom ferrous limits. Both are IP68 waterproof to 5 m (16 ft) and carry a 3-year warranty.

The Specs That Decide It

On paper these two overlap more than they differ. Both run simultaneous multi-frequency with selectable single frequencies, both have Auto, Manual and Tracking ground balance, both have a built-in lithium-ion battery of about the same size (6700 mAh on the Legend 2, 6800 mAh on the MANTICORE), and both are fully submersible. Four differences actually change which one you should buy:

  • How the target is shown: the Legend 2 gives you a Target ID from 01 to 99 plus FerroCheck, which Nokta describes as a graphic of the ferrous and non-ferrous ratio in the target signal. The MANTICORE plots each target on a 2D ID map with 100 conductive and 50 ferrous segments, alongside a 0 to 99 Target ID with ferrous indication.

  • What comes in the box: two coils and Bluetooth aptX Low Latency headphones with the Legend 2; one M11 11 inch Double-D round coil and ML 105 wireless headphones with the MANTICORE.

  • Search modes: five on the Legend 2 (Park, Field, Beach, Relic, Gold); ten on the MANTICORE (five All-Terrain, four Beach and one Goldfield).

  • Weight: Nokta lists 2.6 lb (1.2 kg) including the coil. Minelab lists 2.9 lb (1.3 kg) and does not say whether that includes the coil.

2D ID Map vs 99 Target IDs and FerroCheck

This is the real reason to pay more for the MANTICORE. Minelab's 2D ID map puts conductivity on one axis and ferrous response on the other, and each detection leaves a Target Trace on the map. Custom Ferrous Limits then let you set where the MANTICORE classifies a target as ferrous or non-ferrous. On a homesite full of nails, that is more information per signal than a single number can carry. Minelab also says Multi-IQ+ delivers up to 50% more power than the EQUINOX series; that is Minelab's claim, and Minelab publishes no depth figure to go with it.

The Legend 2 answers with 99 Target IDs, the Target ID shown while you pinpoint, and FerroCheck as a second opinion on iron. For a hunter who digs by tone and number, that is enough to work trashy ground well. The 2D map only pays off if you put in the hours to read it, and I recommend those hours on known targets in a test garden before you trust it at a site.

What You Get in the Box

The Nokta Legend 2 standard package holds the system box, the LD28 11 inch and LD21 8 x 5.5 inch waterproof DD coils with covers, a USB charging and data cable, and Bluetooth aptX Low Latency headphones with a soft case. The MANTICORE comes with the M11 11 inch Double-D round coil, ML 105 wireless headphones with an audio cable and hard case, and five screen protectors.

That second coil matters more than it looks. The LD21 is the coil you want for tight spots and iron clusters, and with the Legend 2 you have it on day one. On the MANTICORE, the matching small coil is the Minelab M8 8 x 5.5 inch, and our MANTICORE bundle with the M8 and M15 coils is the way to start with more than one coil. If you already know you want two coils, compare that bundle with the standard Legend 2 package.

Where the Answer Changes

Iron-Heavy Homesites and Relic Fields

Choose the MANTICORE if you hunt old homesites and plowed relic ground most weekends and want ferrous and conductive information on every target. Its recovery speed runs 0 to 8, and Minelab suggests the faster settings for separating targets in trash. The Legend 2 is a capable relic machine too: recovery speed runs 1 to 10, Iron Filter 1 to 9 in Multi, and Relic mode is Nokta's mode for targets deeper than the other modes reach. Pair it with the LD21 coil and a higher recovery speed when the iron is tight.

Trashy Parks

The Nokta Legend 2 and the Minelab MANTICORE both work well in trashy parks. In a park full of foil and pull tabs, coil size and recovery speed do more than the brand name. The Legend 2's Park mode is designed for coins and jewelry in urban parks with modern trash, and the LD21 is already in the box. The MANTICORE's 2D map helps you skip trash once you have learned where it plots, but that takes time.

Salt Beaches and Water

The Nokta Legend 2 and the Minelab MANTICORE are both IP68 to 5 m (16 ft), both run multi-frequency only in their Beach modes, and both have Beach settings for wet salt sand. The difference is audio. Nokta's manual says the included Bluetooth headphones are not waterproof and that wireless audio stops once the system box is submerged, so when the Legend 2 goes under you need the vibration alert, Nokta waterproof headphones or the Nokta bone conduction headphones. For the MANTICORE, Minelab names its 3.5 mm waterproof headphones for underwater use; its Underwater Boost setting is meant only for them. Budget for wired waterproof audio with either detector if you plan to submerge it. The MANTICORE's four Beach modes (General, Low Conductors, Deep, Surf & Seawater) give a beach specialist more presets to start from.

Gold Ground

Both have a gold mode, and both limit it to the higher single frequencies: Multi, 20 or 40 kHz on the Legend 2 Gold mode; Multi-IQ+, 20 or 40 kHz in the MANTICORE Goldfield mode. Neither replaces a dedicated gold detector for small nuggets in hot ground. If gold is an occasional side trip, the Legend 2 does the job for less money.

Electrical Interference

The Legend 2 gives you 19 manual frequency shift channels to step away from power lines or another detector nearby. The MANTICORE handles interference with Auto, Continuous Auto or Manual noise cancel.

Long Days and Battery

Nokta's manual rates the Legend 2 at 8 to 20 hours depending on settings, with a 5 to 6 hour charge. Minelab's manual gives the MANTICORE about 10 hours, about one hour less in the High Conductors mode, and a charge of about 7 hours on a high-capacity 5 V charger. That gives the Legend 2 the longer maximum, up to 20 hours against about 10 for the MANTICORE, though demanding settings can bring the Legend 2 down to 8. Separately, the Legend 2 is the lighter machine on the published figures, which also helps on a long day.

Common Mistakes When Choosing Between Them

  • Expecting the included wireless headphones to work underwater: on the Legend 2 they are not waterproof and lose the link once the box is submerged. Plan for wired waterproof audio on either detector.

  • Expecting single frequencies in Beach mode: neither detector offers them there. On the MANTICORE, single frequencies are in the All-Terrain modes (5 to 40 kHz) and Goldfield (20 and 40 kHz), and there is no 4 kHz setting. The Legend 2 has 4, 10, 15, 20 and 40 kHz in Park and Field, 20 and 40 kHz in Gold, and none in Relic.

  • Assuming old coils carry over: the Legend 2 uses its own LD coils (Nokta lists the LG coils for the original Legend only), and the MANTICORE works only with its own M-series coils, so EQUINOX coils do not fit it and M-series coils do not fit the EQUINOX.

  • Buying the MANTICORE for the 2D map and never learning it: if you will hunt by tone and number anyway, you are paying for a feature you will not use.

Verdict

Buy the Nokta Legend 2 if you want one waterproof detector for parks, fields, beaches and occasional gold ground, with two coils in the box, a lighter build and a lower price. Buy the Minelab MANTICORE if you are an experienced hunter on iron-heavy relic sites or heavily hunted ground and you will put the time into its 2D ID map and ferrous limits.
