If you're shopping Minelab's flagships, it almost always comes down to two machines: the Minelab MANTICORE and the Minelab EQUINOX 900. Both run simultaneous multi-frequency technology, both are waterproof to 5 m (16 ft), and both will find good targets in the right hands. But they are built for different detectorists, and spending more doesn't automatically get you more finds. The quick answer
Choose the EQUINOX 900 if you want proven Multi-IQ performance, slightly lighter weight, two coils in the box, an easier learning curve, and a lower price. It gives you most of the flagship's performance for less money.
Choose the MANTICORE if you're an experienced hunter who works trashy, iron-heavy, or mineralized ground and wants the newest processing, more transmit power, and the 2D Target ID map for better dig decisions.
Both are strong machines. If you're torn, it's fine to start on an EQUINOX and step up later. Nothing you learn goes to waste when you do.

The differences that actually matter
Most of the spec gaps between these two don't change your day. Four of them do.
2D Target ID and Multi-IQ+ processing
This is the MANTICORE's real advantage. Minelab rates its Multi-IQ+ engine at up to 50% more power than the EQUINOX series, and it adds a 2D ID map with a conductive horizontal axis and a ferrous vertical axis instead of squeezing everything into one number. In iron-heavy dirt, that extra detail helps you decide whether to dig before the shovel comes out. The EQUINOX 900's -19 to 99 numeric ID, with its own ferrous range below zero, is very good. The MANTICORE just gives an experienced hunter more to work with.
Weight and handling
These are closer than most people assume: Minelab lists 2.8 lb (1.27 kg) for the EQUINOX 900 and 2.9 lb (1.3 kg) for the MANTICORE. Both use a three-piece carbon fiber shaft. The EQUINOX 900 is still the lighter machine over a long grid, so if all-day comfort matters to you, it has a slight edge.
Learning curve
The EQUINOX 900 is the friendlier machine. Its preset modes get a newer detectorist finding good targets quickly, and the deeper customization is there when you're ready for it. The MANTICORE rewards time spent learning it. The 2D ID system and advanced settings are powerful, but a beginner won't get the MANTICORE's full advantage on day one.
Price
The EQUINOX 900 is the more affordable way into Minelab's simultaneous multi-frequency technology. The MANTICORE costs more for the newest processing, more target data, and the refinements that matter most in difficult conditions. If you hunt hard or often, that premium is worth it. How they compare by the way you hunt
Beach and saltwater
Both work well here. Multi-frequency is what tames wet salt sand, and both are waterproof to 5 m (16 ft) for wading and shallow surf work. The EQUINOX 900 has two Beach profiles: Beach 1 for dry and wet sand, and Beach 2, which Minelab says gives the best results when wading or shallow diving with the coil or detector fully submerged. It is the value pick. The MANTICORE has four Beach modes (General, Low Conductors, Deep, and Surf & Seawater), all in Multi-IQ+. For either one, a good scoop matters as much as the machine, so pair it with a sand scoop to speed up recovery.
Parks, fields and trashy sites
This is where the MANTICORE separates itself. In heavily hunted parks and iron-dense ground, its Trash Reject mode, recovery speeds from 0 to 8 and the 2D map help you pick keeper targets out from beside nails and junk. The EQUINOX 900 is very good here too, with recovery speeds from 1 to 8 and the EQX 06 6 inch coil in the box, which works well in tight trash. But machine to machine, the MANTICORE's target analysis is the more advanced tool.
Relics and deep targets
For deep relics and variable mineralization, we lean toward the MANTICORE for its extra transmit power and the 2D map, and it pairs well with the larger M15 15 x 12 inch coil for coverage. Gold prospecting
Both find gold, in different ways. The EQUINOX 900's Gold mode has Normal Ground and Difficult Ground profiles with prospecting audio and a true threshold, and Minelab describes it as suited to smaller surface nuggets in mineralized ground. That is why prospectors like it as a do-it-all at a lower cost. The MANTICORE's Goldfield mode runs Multi-IQ+, 20 kHz or 40 kHz and brings more power. For dedicated nugget hunting in extreme ground, a purpose-built gold detector is still the right tool: a pulse induction machine for depth on larger nuggets in hot ground, or a high frequency VLF for the smallest gold. Display, controls, waterproofing and battery
Both use a physical, backlit keypad. The EQUINOX 900 has a monochrome LCD with a red keypad backlight. The MANTICORE's full color display shows more at a glance, especially the 2D map, and its keypad backlight is white. Both have a flashlight, magnetic USB charging and a waterproof cap on the headphone socket, and both are waterproof to 5 m (16 ft), IP68. Battery life is close: Minelab gives about 12 hours for the EQUINOX 900 (5100 mAh) and about 10 hours for the MANTICORE (6800 mAh). A full charge takes about 5 to 6 hours on the EQUINOX 900 and about 7 hours on the MANTICORE with a high capacity charger. On either one, a power bank covers long days.
Coils and accessories
The EQUINOX 900 ships with two coils, the EQX 11 and EQX 06, and the EQX 15 15 x 12 inch is the large factory option. The platform has been out longer, and Coiltek makes aftermarket coils for it. The MANTICORE ships with the M11 11 inch coil, and the M8 8 x 5.5 inch, M9 9 inch and M15 15 x 12 inch round out the factory lineup. The two coil ranges do not interchange. Whichever you choose, matching the coil to your ground is one of the highest-impact upgrades you can make.
One more thing on the MANTICORE: it keeps improving
Minelab has released software updates for the MANTICORE since launch, installed over USB. The current instruction manual includes a setting of from 0 (Off) to 12, that reduces false signals from ferrous objects. Our MANTICORE software update post covers what changed. Which should you choose?
Go with the EQUINOX 900 if you:
- Want proven, high-end performance at a lower price
- Prefer the slightly lighter machine and longer battery runtime
- Want an easier learning curve with room to grow into advanced settings
- Want two coils in the box and a 4 kHz single frequency
- Detect casually or a few times a month, across mixed sites
Go with the MANTICORE if you:
- Are an experienced detectorist chasing maximum performance
- Regularly hunt trashy, iron-heavy, or highly mineralized ground
- Want the 2D Target ID map and the most target information before you dig
- Detect frequently and want Minelab's newest processing
- Are happy to invest time mastering a deeper platform
Our bottom line
Both are top-tier, and neither is a wrong answer. If budget or an easy learning curve matters most, buy the EQUINOX 900 with confidence. It is a strong value in multi-frequency detecting. If you hunt hard, hunt often, and want Minelab's flagship for trashy and difficult ground, the MANTICORE is worth the extra.
