The Minelab V12 Skidplate (part 3011-0411) is the replacement coil cover for Minelab's 12 x 9 in elliptical Double-D coil. Minelab sells it to replace a worn skidplate on a Vanquish coil so the coil keeps its protection. It suits anyone running the V12 or V12X coil who has worn through the original cover or wants a spare before a trip.
Who the V12 skidplate is for
Buy this cover if your detector uses the 12 x 9 in V12 or V12X coil: the Vanquish 360, Vanquish 460 and Vanquish 560, the X-Terra Pro and the X-Terra Elite, as well as the earlier Vanquish 340, 440 and 540, which shipped with the original V12 coil. It does not fit the 8 x 5 in V8 and V8X or the 10 x 7 in V10 and V10X coils; those have their own skidplates in our metal detector parts and accessories collection.
What it does in use
- Takes the wear instead of the coil: the skidplate is the sacrificial layer between the coil shell and rocks, roots, sand and pavement. Replacing a worn plate is far cheaper than replacing the coil.
- Keeps the coil sealed: a plate worn through at the leading edge exposes the coil shell to abrasion and, on waterproof coils, to the first point where a crack can start.
- Snaps on without tools: the cover clips over the lower face of the coil. Clean grit out of the old cover before fitting a new one, since sand trapped between plate and coil wears the shell from the inside.
- Minimal added weight: a thin moulded plate, so it does not change the balance of a Vanquish or X-Terra on the arm in any way you will notice.
What is in the box
- One Minelab V12 Skidplate, part 3011-0411
No coil is included. If you need the coil itself, the V12X 12 x 9 in coil ships with a skidplate already fitted.
Compatibility
Fits: Minelab V12 12 x 9 in Double-D coil (part 3011-0408, original Vanquish coil) and the V12X 12 x 9 in Double-D coil (part 3011-0459, the coil on the Vanquish 360, 460 and 560 and the X-Terra Pro and Elite). Does not fit: V8, V8X, V10, V10X, or any Equinox or Manticore coil.
Where it matters most
Skidplates wear fastest on gravel bars, rocky creek beds, dry beach sand and anywhere you scrub the coil along the ground to pinpoint. Freshwater and wet sand are easy on the plate but carry grit under it, so pop the cover off and rinse after a wet hunt. In lawns and parks a plate can last seasons. Check the leading edge of the plate every few hunts; once it is thin or cracked, replace it rather than running the bare coil.
How it differs from the other Minelab skidplates
Minelab makes a separate skidplate for each coil size. The V8 skidplate fits the 8 x 5 in coil, the V10 skidplate fits the 10 x 7 in coil, and this V12 skidplate fits the 12 x 9 in coil. Match the plate to the coil size on your detector, not to the detector model, since several Vanquish and X-Terra models ship with different coils.
