Garrett Metal Detector Families Explained
Garrett's current sport range falls into four groups: the ACE series for land, the waterproof AT series, the Vortex multi-frequency series, and gold detectors. The family decides the technology, how far the detector can go into water and which coils fit, so pick the family first and the model second.
ACE series: ACE 300, ACE 400 and ACE Apex
The ACE 300 and ACE 400 are single-frequency land detectors with a 0 to 99 Digital Target ID, five search modes plus Pinpoint and four AA batteries. The ACE 300 runs at 8 kHz with a 7 x 10 inch concentric coil; the ACE 400 runs at 10 kHz, adds Iron Audio and comes with an 8.5 x 11 inch DD coil and headphones. The ACE Apex moves to Garrett's Multi-Flex technology, with 5, 10, 15 and 20 kHz plus Multi-Frequency and Multi-Salt, built-in Z-Lynk wireless and a rechargeable battery. On all three the coil is submersible but the control box is not. Wireless audio on the ACE 300 and ACE 400 needs Garrett's external Z-Lynk module.
AT series: AT Pro, AT Gold and AT Max
The AT series is Garrett's all-terrain line, and all three models are submersible to 10 ft (3 m) and run on four AA batteries. The AT Pro runs at 15 kHz and comes with MS-2 wired headphones. The AT Gold is the gold prospecting model, with True All Metal and discrimination modes and four frequency adjust channels; wireless audio on it needs Garrett's external Z-Lynk module. The AT Max runs at 13.6 kHz, has a backlit display and automatic and manual ground balance, and has Z-Lynk built in. Our AT Max packages ship with MS-3 wireless headphones.
Vortex series: VX5, VX7 and VX9
The Vortex detectors are Garrett's waterproof multi-frequency line, submersible to 16 ft (5 m), with a weight of 3 lb (1.38 kg) with coil; the VX7 and VX9 have Z-Lynk wireless built in. The VX5 runs 13 kHz and Multi-Frequency on one 0 to 99 Target ID scale. The VX7 adds 5 kHz, Multi-Salt and two-tier Target ID. The VX9 runs 5, 9, 13, 18 and 25 kHz plus Multi-Frequency and Multi-Salt.
Gold detectors: Axiom, Axiom Lite and Goldmaster 24k
The Axiom and Axiom Lite use Garrett's Ultra-Pulse pulse induction platform for gold in mineralized ground. The Axiom package comes with a 13 x 11 inch DD and an 11 x 7 inch mono coil, MS-3 headphones and an AA Power Pack that adds about 6 to 8 hours. The Axiom Lite comes with the 11 x 7 inch mono coil, runs about 16 hours on its built-in battery and weighs 4.2 lb (1.9 kg) with the coil. The Goldmaster 24k is a 48 kHz single-frequency gold detector with a 6 x 10 inch waterproof DD coil and a 0 to 99 Digital Target ID.
Coils, Pinpointers and Accessories
Garrett coils fit only the family they are made for, so check that a coil is listed for your model before you order. ACE series coils fit the ACE 300 and ACE 400, while the ACE Apex takes only its own Multi-Flex coils (Viper, Raider, Ripper and Reaper), and prior ACE coils do not fit it. For recovery, the Garrett Pro-Pointer pinpointers cover land and water: the Pro-Pointer AT is waterproof to 20 ft (6 m) with an IP68 rating, the Pro-Pointer AT Z-Lynk adds Garrett's wireless link, and the Pro-Pointer II is IP66 weatherproof, with only its tip meant to go under water. We also carry Garrett headphones, including Z-Lynk wireless sets, the Z-Lynk modules that add wireless to the ACE 300, ACE 400 and AT Gold, and Garrett carry bags and pouches.

Garrett states that its detectors, pinpointers and searchcoils now come with a 3-year warranty: limited parts and labor for 36 months from the date of purchase, not covering batteries or repairs made by an unauthorized party.
