About this open box Teknetics Gamma 6000
Open Box: Metal detectors with damaged or opened packaging, offered at a reduced price. Full manufacturer’s warranty included. Questions about a specific unit? Call us. Teknetics' 2-year warranty applies, the same as on a new Gamma 6000. The new detector is on our Teknetics Gamma 6000 page, and every open box and demo detector we have is in our open box collection.
Who the Teknetics Gamma 6000 suits
What we like about the Teknetics Gamma 6000 is that it gives you more control than a very basic beginner detector without getting complicated. It suits someone who wants to learn target identification, discrimination and ground balancing.
Teknetics Gamma 6000 modes and controls
The MODE button moves between Discriminate, All Metal and Ground Grab, and the pinpoint button gives a no-motion pinpoint. In Discriminate, the two-digit Target ID reads from 10 to 99, and discrimination rejects categories cumulatively from Iron upward; Notch then lets you accept or reject a single category. All Metal has no Target ID, and only sensitivity and volume adjust there.
You choose 1 to 4 tones (3 is the default), and the pitch rises as the signal gets stronger. Sensitivity runs from 05 to 99 and volume from 0 to 10, with a headphone jack that cuts the speaker. Ground Grab balances automatically while you pump the coil, though Teknetics says automatic balancing is not possible in soils with ground values below 40; manual ground balance shows 0 to 99 on the display but has 1,000 settings in all. A three-segment depth indicator works in Discriminate, and in pinpoint the display shows approximate depth in inches.
Power comes from one 9-volt battery: Teknetics expects 20 to 25 hours from an alkaline battery and about 8 hours from a rechargeable one.
Teknetics Gamma 6000 Target ID scale
| Category | Target ID | Example from Teknetics |
|---|---|---|
| Iron | 10 to 39 | |
| Foil | 40 to 54 | Small gold items read in foil or nickel |
| Nickel | 55 to 59 | US nickel 57 |
| Pull-Tab | 60 to 64 | |
| S-Cap+ | 65 to 74 | |
| Zinc | 75 to 79 | Zinc US penny 77 |
| Dime | 80 to 84 | US dime 83 |
| Quarter+ | 85 to 99 | US quarter 88 to 89 |
Teknetics notes that small gold items register under foil or the nickel, and larger gold items toward the center of the scale.
Settings that matter on the Teknetics Gamma 6000
Ground balance: in a park where the soil mineralization changes, a detector can turn unstable or give false signals. The Gamma has both Ground Grab automatic ground balancing and manual ground balance, plus a readout of the amount of magnetic mineralization. We like that you learn why ground conditions matter instead of relying only on factory settings.
Numerical target ID: the Gamma shows a two-digit target ID from 10 to 99. On a repeatable signal from a buried coin, that number helps you judge the response, but we would not treat it as an exact identification. Depth, nearby iron and the angle of the target can all change the reading.
Discrimination: in a modern park full of pull tabs and bottle caps, discrimination cuts down some of the unwanted signals. Reject too much, though, and you can reject gold jewelry as well; Teknetics notes that small gold items register in the foil or nickel area of the scale. We would start with moderate discrimination.
A detector to learn on: the Gamma shows how sensitivity, ground balance and discrimination work together. That makes it a good fit for someone who expects to keep detecting.
One mistake to avoid with the Teknetics Gamma 6000
Taking it into the water. The Gamma 6000 is not an underwater detector, and Teknetics lists it as not weatherproof, so keep the control housing out of the water.
Our recommendation on the Teknetics Gamma 6000
We recommend the Gamma 6000 to beginners and intermediate detectorists who want to build their skills. What we like most is the combination of accessible controls and adjustments that actually mean something.
