Is the Fisher Gold Bug 2 waterproof?

Yes, the Fisher Gold Bug 2 search coils are waterproof, but the detector itself is not. Both the 6.5-inch and 10-inch elliptical coils in this combo can be submerged to sweep shallow creeks and wet gravel bars. The control housing is moisture and dust resistant only, so keep it above the waterline or hip-mount it on your belt. If you need a fully submersible unit, compare the options in our gold prospecting metal detectors collection.

What batteries does the Fisher Gold Bug 2 take?

The Fisher Gold Bug 2 takes two standard 9-volt batteries, and Fisher rates alkaline cells at roughly 25 to 35 hours of use per set. There is no built-in rechargeable pack, which makes swapping batteries in the field simple and keeps the detector at 2.9 pounds with the 10-inch coil. Spare cells and other add-ons are listed in our Fisher Gold Bug 2 collection.

Which coil should I use on the Fisher Gold Bug 2, the 6.5-inch or the 10-inch?

On the Fisher Gold Bug 2, the 6.5-inch coil is best for bedrock crevices, tight cobble, and highly mineralized ground where a larger coil gets noisy, while the 10-inch coil covers open washes faster and gives more depth on larger nuggets. Both are elliptical, waterproof, and tuned for the Gold Bug 2's 71 kHz frequency. This open box combo includes both, so you can match the coil to the ground.
