    About the Minelab VANQUISH 340

The VANQUISH 340 keeps Minelab's Multi-IQ technology simple. Multi-IQ transmits several frequencies at once, so there is no frequency to pick and no ground balance to set, and Minelab gives the 340 three search modes: Coin, Jewelry and All Metal. Controls are kept to four sensitivity levels, three volume levels and five discrimination segments, and targets read on a ferrous scale of -19 to 0 and a non-ferrous scale of 1 to 40 with a four level depth indicator. Three target tones help you judge a signal by ear: Minelab describes low tones for iron, mid tones for valuables such as gold and high tones for silver.

Where the Minelab VANQUISH 340 fits

Parks, yards, sports fields and the dry and damp sand of a beach are the 340's ground. Coin mode is where we would start in a park, Jewelry where people swim and lose rings, and All Metal on old homesites where you would rather dig everything than miss an odd shaped target. Minelab rates the V10 coil waterproof to 1 meter (3.3 feet); the control box is not waterproof, so the coil can go into wet grass, puddles and the edge of the water while the control box stays dry. For hunting in the water, the fully waterproof VANQUISH 360 and VANQUISH 460 in the table below are the models to look at.

    Weight, shaft and power

Minelab lists the VANQUISH 340 at 1.2 kg (2.6 lb). The shaft extends to 145 cm (57 inches) and collapses to 76 cm (30 inches) for a car trunk or a closet. Power comes from 4 AA alkaline batteries, which are in the box, so spares are easy to carry. Audio comes through the built-in loudspeaker or any wired headphones with a 3.5 mm (1/8 inch) plug; wired options are in our metal detector headphones collection.

Getting started with the Minelab VANQUISH 340

Put in the AA batteries, switch on and start in Coin mode on a patch of grass you know. Swing the coil low, level and slow, just above the grass, and overlap each pass by about half so a target between two passes is not missed. Lifting the coil at the end of each swing costs depth, so keep it low all the way across. Dig every repeatable signal for the first few trips so you learn what the three tones and the target numbers mean on your ground. Always get permission before detecting on private land. Our VANQUISH 340 getting started guide walks through assembly and the first hunt.

Is the Minelab VANQUISH 340 waterproof?

The Minelab VANQUISH 340 is waterproof only at the coil: Minelab rates the V10 10 x 7 inch Double-D coil waterproof to 1 m (3.3 ft), and the control box is not waterproof, so keep it above the water. We would use it on wet sand, at the edge of the surf and in shallow creeks, but not for wading deeper or diving. For a fully submersible VANQUISH, Minelab makes the Minelab VANQUISH 360, rated IP68 to 5 m (16 ft).

What is the difference between the Minelab VANQUISH 340 and the VANQUISH 360?

The difference between the Minelab VANQUISH 340 and the VANQUISH 360 starts with water: the 340's V10 coil is waterproof to 1 m (3.3 ft) while its control box is not, and Minelab rates the whole VANQUISH 360 IP68, fully submersible to 5 m (16 ft). The 340 runs on 4 AA alkaline batteries, and the 360 has an internal 3.7 V, 4500 mAh lithium-ion battery. The 340 has Coin, Jewelry and All Metal modes, 4 sensitivity levels and a target ID of -19 to 40; the 360 has Park, Beach and All Metal modes, 5 sensitivity levels and a target ID of -19 to 99. Is the Minelab VANQUISH 340 a good metal detector for beginners?

Yes, the Minelab VANQUISH 340 is a good metal detector for beginners, and we would recommend it as a first detector. It runs Minelab's Multi-IQ multi-frequency technology with three search modes (Coin, Jewelry and All Metal), 4 sensitivity levels and 3 volume levels, so there is little to set before you start. Three target tones, low for iron, mid for valuables like gold and high for silver, help you judge a signal before you dig. Minelab lists it at 1.2 kg (2.6 lb), and the shaft collapses to 76 cm (30 inches). Compare it with other beginner and intermediate metal detectors.
