Sito 7 in Underwater Stainless Steel Sand Scoop with Handle

The Sito Scoop 7 in Underwater Sand Scoop is the diver's version of Sito's 170 mm basket. It is the same 1.5 mm stainless steel scoop Sito builds for beach hunters, fitted with a short handle instead of a long shaft, so it works where you are already down in the water: wading a surf line, snorkeling a swim area, or diving a drop-off. If most of your recovery happens below the waterline, this is the shape you want.

Who this sand scoop suits, and who should buy something else

Buy this one if you hunt in the water. The short handle puts your hand right at the basket, which is what you need when you are kneeling, floating, or working at arm's length under the surface. A long shaft is a liability there. It catches current, drifts away from you, and gives you nothing to push against when your feet are not planted on the bottom.

If you spend most of your time on dry sand above the wrack line, a long-handled scoop will treat your back better. Something like the Dune Scoops 24 in long handle sand scoop lets you dig standing up. Plenty of detectorists keep both and pick one by the tide.

Hexagonal holes and the foot step

Every hole in the basket is laser cut as a hexagon at 7/16 in. The hexagon is the reason the scoop works: honeycomb packs more openings into the same panel than square mesh does, so wet sand clears in fewer shakes without any single gap growing wide enough to pass a thin band or a small stud earring. That 7/16 in figure is the number to compare against when you are shopping scoops, because it is the one that decides whether you keep the jewelry you dug.

The scoop also carries a flat section 3 mm thick, shaped for your foot. In packed wet sand that is what does the digging. You set the basket, step on the flat, and let your body weight drive it in instead of levering with your wrist. Scoops built with a rounded or sharp top edge give you nowhere safe to push.

At 2 lbs 8.5 oz it is not a light scoop, and that is deliberate. The mass helps it cut into compacted sand and keeps it from wandering in moving water. Clip it to a belt or a float rather than carrying it in hand on a long walk down the beach.
