The Dune Scoops 24 in Long Handle Sand Scoop is a welded, galvanized steel beach scoop with a perforated basket and a rubber hand grip. It is 24 in long overall, about twice the reach of a hand scoop, so you get more leverage and can dig wet sand without kneeling for every target. It suits beach detectorists who want an affordable, sturdy scoop for dry sand, wet sand and wading the shallows. It is sold as a single scoop or as a 2-pack.
Who the 24 in galvanized scoop is for
This scoop is for beach hunters who want something tougher and faster than a plastic scoop or a hand digger, without paying for stainless steel or titanium. A sand scoop beats a hand digger on the beach because sand pours back into a dug hole. The scoop lifts the target out in one pass while loose sand drains through the holes.
The 24 in length gives leverage, but it is not a stand-up scoop: you still crouch or bend to use it. If you want to recover targets standing upright, or you hunt waist-deep water and the surf, choose a long-pole scoop from our sand scoops collection. If you hunt the beach often and want a scoop that will not shed its coating over the years, a stainless steel Dune Scoops model is the longer-lasting choice.
Key features and what they mean in use
- 24 in overall length: more leverage than a short hand scoop, so you can push through packed wet sand with less wrist strain and less kneeling.
- Welded galvanized steel: the zinc coating resists rust in wet sand and salt water, and the welded build holds up to prying in packed sand.
- 3/8 in (9.5 mm) round holes: sand drains through quickly while coins, tokens and most rings stay in the basket. Very small or thin items such as stud earrings and fine chains can slip through holes this size.
- Rubber hand grip: keeps a secure hold when your hands are wet or sandy. Grip color and style may vary with supply.
- Lightweight, open basket: easy to carry along the beach all day, and you can see the target sitting in the basket after a shake.

Where it works well and where it does not
The 24 in scoop works well in dry sand, wet sand at low tide and ankle- to knee-deep water, where you can reach the bottom while bending. Dry sand drains through the holes almost instantly. In wet, packed sand, give the basket a few shakes or a dunk in the water to clear it.
It is not built for deep water or heavy surf, where you need a long pole to reach the bottom. It is not meant for rocky or cobble beaches either, where stones jam the basket. Rinse the scoop in fresh water after saltwater hunts. The galvanized coating slows rust but can wear through at the cutting edge over time with heavy use.
How it compares with other Dune Scoops
- Dune Scoops 6 x 9 in galvanized scoop: a short hand scoop with larger 5/8 in holes, for quick dry-sand recoveries at an even lower cost.
- Dune Scoops stainless steel and titanium scoops: thicker metal, hexagon holes and optional poles and handles, for detectorists who hunt the beach often and want a scoop for the long run.
