Minelab VANQUISH 440 Overview for Owners
The Minelab VANQUISH 440 is the middle model of the VANQUISH 40 Series. It runs Multi-IQ, transmitting on multiple frequencies at once, so there is no frequency to pick. It has Coin, Relic, Jewelry and Custom modes, ten sensitivity levels, 12 discrimination segments across Target IDs from -9 to 40, a fixed High Iron Bias, three target tones (Low, Mid, High), ten volume levels, a pinpoint mode, a 5-level depth indicator and automatic noise cancel, which runs every time you switch on. The V10 10 x 7 inch Double-D coil is waterproof to 1 m (3.3 ft); the control box is water resistant with its rain cover attached. The VANQUISH 440 extends to 145 cm (57 inch), collapses to 76 cm (30 inch) and runs on four AA batteries. Audio runs through the built-in speaker or wired headphones on the 3.5 mm (1/8 inch) socket, and wired headphones came in the box. Minelab covers the control box and coil for 3 years.
Upgrading from the VANQUISH 440 to the VANQUISH 460
The VANQUISH 460 keeps Multi-IQ, ten sensitivity levels and a 10 x 7 inch Double-D coil, now the V10X. It adds IP68 waterproofing to 5 m (16 ft) for the whole detector, control box and coil, a built-in lithium-ion battery that runs up to 10 hours, 30 discrimination segments, three Iron Bias levels, Bluetooth LE Audio (LC3), a backlight, flashlight and handgrip vibration, with Park, Field and Beach modes, a User Profile and the -19 to 99 Target ID scale. If you want to take the whole detector into the water, stop buying batteries or add wireless audio, we recommend the VANQUISH 460. Our post on the VANQUISH 440 vs. 540 and the newer 460 and 560 compares both generations.
Getting the Most from the VANQUISH 440
Coin mode is Minelab's mode for common modern coins while ignoring trash in parks and at the beach. Jewelry mode balances separation and depth for lost rings and chains. Relic mode has the best depth of the four, with slightly reduced separation, for fields and woods. Custom mode stores a favorite mode with your own discrimination pattern, so you can accept or reject individual segments and come back to that setup.
Noise cancel runs at power-on, so we recommend switching on with the coil held still just above the ground and away from power lines. With ten sensitivity levels, start high and step down only if the detector gets noisy. Use pinpoint to narrow the target before you dig, and treat the depth indicator as a guide only, as Minelab's manual does. Gold jewelry and aluminum trash can read alike, so we keep discrimination fairly open on swimming beaches. Our VANQUISH 440 and 540 getting started guide and volume and sensitivity settings guide go through the controls step by step.
Water, Weather and Batteries
The coil can go under water to 1 m (3.3 ft), so you can sweep wet sand and the shallows, but the control box is water resistant only: keep it out of the water and use the rain cover in wet weather. If your rain cover is worn, the Minelab VANQUISH Environmental Cover in this collection fits the VANQUISH 340, 440 and 540 control boxes.
Alkaline AA batteries run about 10 hours. Minelab NiMH rechargeables run about 11 hours and take about 8 hours to charge, and Minelab's manual warns against mixing alkaline and rechargeable batteries. The Minelab AA NiMH battery pack and the 4 AA charger in this collection make the switch to rechargeables simple.
Coils and Accessories That Fit the Minelab VANQUISH 440
The VANQUISH 440 came with the V10 10 x 7 inch elliptical Double-D coil and its skidplate. Minelab lists three coils for the VANQUISH 40 Series: the V8 8 x 5 inch, V10 10 x 7 inch and V12 12 x 9 inch elliptical Double-D coils. Minelab does not list the V8X, V10X or V12X for the 40 Series. We recommend the V12 for open fields and beaches and keeping the V10 for trashy parks. Each Minelab coil comes with its coil cover, and replacement V8, V10 and V12 skidplates are in this collection.
The VANQUISH 440 collection also holds the lower shaft, arm strap, teardrop washers, Minelab wired headphones, other wired headphones with a 1/8 inch plug, the VANQUISH carry bag and the digital VANQUISH 440 and 540 instruction manual. The VANQUISH 440 has no wireless audio, so Bluetooth headphones will not connect.
VANQUISH 340 vs. VANQUISH 440 vs. VANQUISH 540 Comparison
All three VANQUISH 40 Series detectors run Multi-IQ, share the -9 to 40 Target ID scale, use a coil waterproof to 1 m (3.3 ft) on a water resistant control box and run on four AA batteries. They differ in search modes, discrimination, iron control, audio, display and the coil in the box.
