The good news is you never have to guess. Gold and fool's gold behave so differently that once you know the tests, you can settle it at the creek in under a minute with no equipment beyond your hands and your eyes. This guide covers the fast visual checks, the physical tests that never lie, how to handle the trickier question of gold ore, and the one thing about fool's gold that most articles get wrong: finding it is actually a good sign.

Pyrite vs. Gold Side by Side
Put pyrite and gold next to each other and the differences jump out fast. Apart, from memory, they fool people every year. Here's what to compare.
Color. Real gold is a warm, rich, buttery yellow that looks the same from every angle and in every light. Pyrite is paler and brassier, with a cold silvery undertone. The moment you shade it, the difference gets obvious, which is why the shade test below is the first thing to do.
Shape. Pyrite grows as crystals: sharp-edged cubes, blocky clusters, and faceted faces that look almost machine-made. Nature does not cut gold into cubes. Placer gold has been tumbled in water for thousands of years, so it shows up as rounded flakes, smeared grains, and lumpy nuggets with soft edges. If you see square corners and flat crystal faces, you're looking at pyrite.
How it reflects light. Turn the piece in your hand. Pyrite flashes and glints as different crystal faces catch the sun, like a tiny mirror turning on and off. Gold gives off the same steady glow at every angle. This is the "glows vs. glitters" rule, and after a season of panning it becomes so automatic you'll ID a pan at a glance.

Fool's Gold Flakes vs. Gold Flakes
Flakes are where most people get fooled, because a tiny flake doesn't show crystal faces or nugget shapes. What most people call fool's gold flakes in a creek is usually mica, not pyrite, and the pan itself is the best lie detector you own.
Watch how the flakes move in water. Gold is about 19 times heavier than water and roughly seven times denser than mica. Swirl the pan: gold flakes drop straight to the bottom and stay pinned there like they're glued down. Mica flakes drift, flutter, hang in the water, and wash over the pan's edge with the lightest swirl. Anything that floats out of your pan on its own was never gold.
Check them in the shade. Tilt your pan away from the sun or shade it with your body. Gold flakes keep their color and keep glowing in shadow. Mica flakes go dark, silvery, or nearly invisible the second direct light leaves them. A "gold streak" in the sand that sparkles like a disco ball in sunlight and vanishes in shade is mica, every time.
Press one with a pin. A real gold flake is soft metal: press it and it dents, folds, or flattens while staying in one piece. Mica splits into thinner sheets. Pyrite flakes snap or crumble to dark powder.
One habit worth building: keep the maybes. Fine gold is small enough that flakes deserve a second look at home under magnification. A one-ounce glass vial and a snuffer bottle cost less than lunch and save you from blowing questionable flakes out of the pan in the field.
How to Tell Gold from Pyrite: The Field Tests
When looks alone don't settle it, run these in order. Each takes seconds, and together they're conclusive.
1. The shade test. Shadow the piece with your hand. Gold stays yellow, pyrite dulls to gray-brass. Free, instant, and right about 90% of the time on its own.
2. The poke test. Press the piece with a pin, knife tip, or fingernail edge. Gold is soft (2.5 to 3 on the Mohs scale, about the same as a fingernail) and dents like lead. Pyrite is hard and brittle (6 to 6.5) and will chip, crack, or shrug the pin off entirely. This is the single most reliable field test, because nothing else in the pan is both heavy and soft.
3. The streak test. Drag the piece across unglazed ceramic: the back of a bathroom tile, the bottom ring of a coffee mug. Gold leaves a bright gold-yellow streak. Pyrite leaves a greenish-black streak. Mica leaves nearly nothing. Prospectors have used this test for centuries because it never gives a wrong answer.
4. The density check. Bounce the piece in your palm. Gold is startlingly heavy for its size, nearly twice the density of lead. Pyrite is heavy-ish but ordinary. In the pan, gold outweighs everything: it sits under the black sand at the very bottom of the crease, always the last thing left. Pyrite mixes in with the black sand layer instead of hiding beneath it.
5. The smell and spark test (pyrite's confession). Strike pyrite hard against steel and it sparks; crush a piece and it gives off a faint sulfur smell, like a struck match. Gold does neither. Pyrite's name comes from the Greek for fire for exactly this reason.

A note on magnets, since it comes up constantly: a magnet is not a reliable gold-versus-pyrite test. Neither gold nor pyrite is meaningfully magnetic. A related mineral called pyrrhotite is, and your black sand concentrate is, but a piece of pyrite will usually ignore a magnet just like gold does. Use the poke and streak tests instead.
How to Identify Gold Ore
Loose flakes are one question; rock is another. Gold ore rarely looks like the movies, and plenty of real gold ore contains no visible gold at all, so identifying it takes a different approach.
What gold ore actually looks like. The classic host is quartz: white, gray, or rusty-stained veins that carried hot mineral fluids through cracks in the surrounding rock. Prospectors look for quartz with iron staining (rust-orange or reddish-brown coloring, called gossan when it's heavy), because gold commonly rides along with iron sulfides, and those sulfides rust when exposed. Honeycombed, spongy-looking quartz where sulfide crystals have weathered away is a strong sign. Visible gold in quartz shows up as irregular yellow threads, blebs, and wires embedded in the rock, and it passes the same shade and glow tests as any other gold.
The pyrite trap in ore. Sulfide-rich ore is loaded with pyrite, and cubic brassy crystals embedded in quartz are pyrite until proven otherwise. The irony is worth knowing: pyrite in a quartz vein is actually an encouraging sign, because gold and pyrite form in the same conditions and real deposits often carry both. Some pyrite even contains microscopic gold locked inside it. Finding pyrite means you're in the right kind of rock; it just isn't the payday itself.
The crush and pan test. The definitive home test for suspect ore: break off a fist-sized sample, crush it to coarse sand (a steel mortar or a bucket and sledge work fine, wear eye protection), and pan the crushed material. Gold, if present, concentrates in the bottom crease where you can apply every test in this article. This is exactly how old-timers evaluated a vein before sinking a shaft. When to get an assay. If crushed samples keep showing color, or the ore is heavily sulfide-bound where gold hides inside the minerals, a fire assay from a lab settles the question with a number (grams of gold per ton). Assays cost about the price of a tank of gas and have saved people from both false hope and thrown-away fortunes.
A detector shortcut. A gold-capable metal detector will sound off on gold in quartz that your eyes can't see, which is how a lot of modern specimen gold gets found. Is Fool's Gold Worth Anything?
Almost nothing as a mineral: pyrite sells for a few dollars as specimen pieces, and mica for less. But fool's gold pays you in information.
Pyrite and gold are neighbors. They precipitate from similar fluids, in similar geology, and often literally in the same vein. Old mining districts are full of stories about rich gold ore pulled from workings that earlier prospectors abandoned as "just pyrite." So when your pan shows pyrite, or a quartz outcrop is freckled with brassy cubes, don't pack up. Slow down, sample more carefully, and check the black sand twice. You're standing in the kind of ground where gold happens.
Mica tells you less, but even mica-heavy creeks can carry gold, since both end up in the same slow-water traps. The pan doesn't care what's glittering; it only cares what's heavy.
