Quest X1 IDMAXX Metal Detector

The Quest X1 IDMAXX is the entry model of Quest's X Series: a 12 kHz VLF metal detector with Coin, Jewelry and All Metal programs, a 9.5 x 5.5 inch TurboD Blade waterproof coil and a weatherproof control box, at 1 kg (2 lb 3 oz). Its three-section shaft assembles at adult or junior length, so it suits first-time detectorists, kids and families who share one machine. The X5 and X10 above it add full waterproofing and more settings, and the comparison table below covers all three. Our X1 IDMAXX collection holds the detector and its digital quick start guide.

Quest X1 IDMAXX Overview

The X1 IDMAXX is the simplest detector in the Quest X Series. It runs a single 12 kHz frequency and gives you three programs: Coin is very stable with a medium recovery speed, Jewelry is very sensitive with a high recovery speed for gold rings and jewelry, and All Metal has zero discrimination with a high recovery speed. The target ID reads by conductivity with a five-bar indication segment, and dedicated buttons cover pinpoint, sensitivity, ground balance, volume and a built-in flashlight.

Quest X1 vs X5 IDMAXX: Which Should You Buy?

All three X Series detectors run at 12 kHz, so stepping up buys you water and control, not a different frequency.

  • Quest X5 IDMAXX: the whole detector goes under water, discrimination by target ID segments and a collapsible shaft.
  • Quest X10 IDMAXX: the same water rating with a larger coil, a saveable User mode and six tone profiles.

If you hunt dry parks and yards, or you are buying for a child, the X1 covers it. If you will work creek edges, wet sand or long days in the rain, we recommend the X5.

Quest X1 IDMAXX, Best For:

  • A first detector with simple, dedicated buttons and three programs
  • Kids and families, with one machine that sets up at junior length
  • Vacation and travel hunts, where a light, short kit matters

Where the Quest X1 IDMAXX Works Best and Its Limits

The X1 is at home in parks, yards, school fields and on the dry beach. The coil is waterproof, but Quest says submersion can damage the control box, so keep the control box above the waterline and the weather cap over the USB-C port. All Metal mode accepts every target, and Quest pitches it for gold prospecting; for serious nugget hunting in mineralized ground, see our gold detectors. We recommend learning the three tones early, so you can hunt by ear and glance at the display to confirm.

Accessories for the Quest X1 IDMAXX

The Quest X1 IDMAXX quick start guide is a digital download covering setup and the three programs. A handheld probe from our Quest pinpointers finds the target in the hole faster, and our Quest carry bags and pouches hold your finds.

What search programs does the Quest X1 IDMAXX have?

The Quest X1 IDMAXX has three search programs: Coin, Jewelry and All Metal. Coin is very stable with a medium recovery speed for parks and yards, Jewelry is very sensitive with a high recovery speed for gold rings and jewelry, and All Metal has zero discrimination, so every metal target sounds off. Each program answers with low, middle and high tones. The digital Quest X1 IDMAXX quick start guide walks through all three.

How long does it take to charge the Quest X1 IDMAXX?

Charging the Quest X1 IDMAXX takes about 4 hours for a full charge from a USB wall charger, through the USB-C port on the control box. The battery is built in, so there are no batteries to buy. Keep the weather cap over the USB-C port when you hunt, since the control box handles heavy rain but should not go under water. Should I buy the Quest X1 IDMAXX or the X5 IDMAXX?

Buy the Quest X1 IDMAXX if you hunt dry parks, yards and beaches, or want a light detector that a child can use at junior length. Buy the Quest X5 IDMAXX if you want to work rain, creek edges and shallow water, because the whole X5 is waterproof to 3 m (10 ft), and if you want a 1 to 99 target ID with segment discrimination. Both run at 12 kHz. Our Quest metal detectors page compares all three models.

Can the Quest X1 IDMAXX find gold?

Yes, the Quest X1 IDMAXX can find gold jewelry: its Jewelry program is very sensitive with a high recovery speed for gold rings, and All Metal mode accepts every target, which Quest describes as good for gold prospecting. For serious nugget hunting in mineralized ground, we recommend a dedicated machine from our gold detectors.
