Quest X5 IDMAXX Metal Detector

The Quest X5 IDMAXX is a compact 12 kHz VLF metal detector that Quest rates waterproof to 3 m (10 ft) as a whole detector, with Park, Field and Gold modes, a 1 to 99 target ID, the TurboD Blade9 Double-D coil and a collapsible Super3D shaft, at 1.1 kg (2.4 lb). It suits beginners who want one detector for parks, creek edges, rain and wet sand. It sits between the entry X1 and the X10 with its larger coil, and the comparison table below covers all three. Our X5 IDMAXX collection holds the detector and its digital user manual.

Quest X5 IDMAXX Overview

The X5 IDMAXX runs Quest's CVX Compact VLF platform on a single 12 kHz frequency and shows a target ID from 1 to 99 on every signal. Discrimination works by segments across the top of the display, each a group of target IDs such as 1 to 20 or 21 to 40: switch a segment off and the X5 ignores that group. Park and Field start with some segments already rejected, and Gold accepts them all, so Gold mode has no discrimination. Ground balance is manual: hold the ground balance button and pump the coil above the ground, and redo it when the soil changes. The control box has a backlit LCD and a flashlight, and the built-in battery charges over USB-C in about 4 hours.

Quest X5 vs X10 IDMAXX: Which Should You Buy?

  • Quest X10 IDMAXX: the same water rating and shaft, plus the larger Blade11 coil, a saveable User mode, six tone profiles and single-ID discrimination.
  • Quest X1 IDMAXX: the entry model, lighter, with a control box that should stay out of the water and a shaft that sets up at junior length.

For coins and jewelry in trashy parks, the narrower Blade9 coil makes it easier to check one response at a time. For open fields where you want more ground per swing and a saved setup, we recommend the X10.

Quest X5 IDMAXX, Best For:

  • Beginners who want target ID and full waterproofing in one compact detector
  • Rain, wet grass, creek edges and shallow water
  • Car and backpack trips, with a shaft that collapses to 46 cm (18 inch)

Where the Quest X5 IDMAXX Works Best and Its Limits

The X5 works parks, fields, yards and beaches, and its rating lets you follow a creek bank or wade the shallows. As a single-frequency detector, if you hunt wet salt sand often, we recommend a multi-frequency machine from our beach metal detectors. Gold mode accepts every target ID, but it does not turn the X5 into a nugget detector; for that, see our gold detectors. Before the X5 goes under water, check that your headphones are made for underwater use.

Is the Quest X5 IDMAXX good for beginners?

Yes, the Quest X5 IDMAXX is a good detector for beginners. It has three ready-made modes (Park, Field and Gold), a 1 to 99 target ID on every signal and a compact Blade9 Double-D coil, and the whole detector is waterproof to 3 m (10 ft), so rain and creek edges are no worry. We recommend learning the audio along with the numbers. Compare other first detectors in our beginner and intermediate detectors.

How does discrimination work on the Quest X5 IDMAXX?

Discrimination on the Quest X5 IDMAXX works by segments across the top of the display, each one a group of target IDs such as 1 to 20 or 21 to 40. Switch a segment off and the X5 ignores that group. Park and Field start with some segments already rejected, and Gold accepts them all, so discrimination is not available in Gold mode. If you want to reject one single ID value instead, the Quest X10 IDMAXX does that.

How do you ground balance the Quest X5 IDMAXX?

You ground balance the Quest X5 IDMAXX by hand: hold the ground balance button and pump the coil up and down above the ground until the detector settles. Redo it when you move to different soil, such as from a lawn to a gravel path or wet sand. The digital Quest X5 IDMAXX user manual covers the full setup.

Can I use the Quest X5 IDMAXX on the beach?

Yes, you can use the Quest X5 IDMAXX on the beach. The whole detector is waterproof to 3 m (10 ft), so dry sand, wet sand and wading are all within its rating. It runs a single 12 kHz frequency, so for regular hunting in wet salt sand we recommend a multi-frequency detector from our beach metal detectors.
