Quest X10 IDMAXX Metal Detector

The Quest X10 IDMAXX is the top model of Quest's compact X Series: a 12 kHz VLF metal detector with a 0 to 99 target ID, Park, Field, Gold and a saveable User mode, six tone profiles and the Blade11 11 x 10 inch Double-D coil. Quest rates the whole detector waterproof to 3 m (10 ft), and it weighs 1.26 kg (2.8 lb). It suits detectorists who search open fields and beaches and want more control than the X5 gives, and the comparison table below covers all three models. Our X10 IDMAXX collection holds the detector, the X10 package with WireFree Lite wireless headphones and the quick start guide.

Quest X10 IDMAXX Overview

The X10 IDMAXX runs Quest's CVX Compact VLF platform on a single 12 kHz frequency. It has four search modes: Field rejects target IDs below 20 with a fast recovery speed, Gold has no discrimination and is the only mode with an adjustable threshold, Park rejects IDs under 40 for coins, and User stores your own settings. Frequency shift moves the detector away from a nearby machine or a noisy power line.

Quest X10 vs X5 IDMAXX: Which Should You Buy?

  • Quest X5 IDMAXX: the same water rating, shaft and battery, with the narrower Blade9 coil and segment discrimination.
  • Quest X1 IDMAXX: the entry model, with a control box that should stay out of the water and a shaft that sets up at junior length.

We lean toward the X10 for larger, open areas and the User mode, and toward the X5 when maneuverability and a lower price band matter more. The bigger coil covers more ground per sweep, but it does not guarantee more depth on every target, and in trashy ground a smaller coil can give more usable signals.

Quest X10 IDMAXX, Best For:

  • Open fields and beaches where targets lie far apart
  • Returning to a saved setup at a favorite park
  • Hunting by ear, with tone profiles that split targets into up to five groups

Where the Quest X10 IDMAXX Works Best and Its Limits

The X10 handles parks, fields, beaches and shallow water. As a single-frequency detector, for regular hunting in wet salt sand we recommend a multi-frequency machine from our beach metal detectors. After a beach hunt, rinse the detector and keep the audio protection cap on, because Quest's warranty does not cover sand in the connector. Keep wireless headphones on dry land when the detector goes under.

What do the tone profiles on the Quest X10 IDMAXX do?

The six tone profiles on the Quest X10 IDMAXX set how targets sound. C1 is a single tone, C2 gives iron a low tone and everything else a medium tone, and C3 splits iron (low), gold, nickel and copper (medium), and silver and aluminum (high). C4 gives iron plus three tones, C5 gives iron plus four tones, and C6 is a linear tone that follows signal strength. Tones are not a final identification, so dig signals that repeat. The Quest X10 MAXX quick start guide covers the settings menu.

How long does the Quest X10 IDMAXX battery last?

The Quest X10 IDMAXX battery lasts about 30 hours on the speaker or 34 hours with wired headphones, per Quest's rating for the internal 1000 mAh lithium-polymer battery. It charges in around 4 hours over USB-C from a standard 5 V USB charger, power bank or solar charger. Browse more Quest detectors in our Quest metal detectors.

What is the User mode on the Quest X10 IDMAXX?

The User mode on the Quest X10 IDMAXX stores your own settings next to the Field, Gold and Park modes, and it starts out rejecting target IDs below 20. Set up sensitivity, discrimination and tones for a park you hunt often, and the X10 goes back to that setup without setting everything again. The Quest X5 IDMAXX has the three factory modes only.

How do you use frequency shift on the Quest X10 IDMAXX?

To use frequency shift on the Quest X10 IDMAXX, hold the ground balance button and press the volume buttons. Frequency shift moves the operating frequency away from a nearby detector or a noisy power line, so use it when the X10 chatters with no target under the coil. We recommend trying a lower sensitivity first if the noise comes from the ground. For other fixes, see our Quest troubleshooting guide.
