Minelab Equinox Assembly Guide - Complete Setup Instructions

Minelab Equinox Basics

Follow these easy steps to assemble your EQUINOX Series detector. The Equinox 600, 700, 800, and 900 models all use the same assembly process, making this guide universal for the entire Minelab Equinox series.

What You'll Need Before Starting

Your Equinox detector box includes all necessary hardware for assembly. The process takes about 10-15 minutes and requires no additional tools. Make sure you have adequate workspace and keep the small hardware pieces organized.

Attach Coil to Lower Shaft

  1. Insert the two yoke washers into the holes on either side of the yoke.
  2. Slide the yoke into the yoke bracket on top of the coil. Ensure that the spring-loaded pin in the lower shaft is underneath.
  3. Insert the yoke bolt through the yoke and the yoke bracket.
  4. Fasten with the yoke nut - Do not over-tighten.

Pro tip: The yoke should move smoothly but not be loose. Over-tightening can crack the coil bracket, especially on aftermarket search coils.

Assemble the Shaft Sections

  1. Loosen the twist locks by rotating them counter-clockwise.
  2. Press the spring-loaded pin in the lower shaft and slide it into the middle shaft until the pin reaches the adjustment holes. The pin will click into place.
  3. Attach the middle shaft to the upper shaft in the same way.
  4. Lock the position of the shafts by rotating twist locks clockwise.

The Equinox's three-piece shaft system allows for compact storage and length adjustment. You'll fine-tune the length after attaching the armrest to match your height.

Attach the Armrest

  1. Place the armrest onto the top of the upper shaft. Position the armrest just below your elbow, then align the central hole in the armrest with the nearest hole in the shaft.
  2. Insert the screw through the stand, upper shaft, and armrest. Tighten the screw carefully.
  3. With the velcro side facing upwards, thread the armrest strap through both slots in the armrest. Ensure the end of the strap will be fastened outwards from your arm.

Proper armrest positioning reduces fatigue during long detecting sessions. The armrest should support your forearm without forcing your wrist into an uncomfortable angle.

Connect the Search Coil

  1. Wrap the coil cable around the lower and middle shaft enough times to take up the slack, but so the coil can still tilt without restriction.
  2. Use the velcro tabs provided to secure the coil cable against the shaft.
  3. Align the coil connector and plug into the socket in the back of the control unit, tightening the retaining ring.

Don't wrap the cable too tightly - you need some play for the coil to move freely. The retaining ring prevents accidental disconnection, but finger-tight is sufficient.

Final Assembly Tips

Once assembled, power on your detector to verify the coil connection is secure. The Equinox will display an error if the coil isn't properly connected. Adjust the shaft length so the coil stays parallel to the ground when you're standing upright with a relaxed swing.

Common Assembly Mistakes to Avoid

  • Over-tightening the coil yoke nut (can crack the bracket)
  • Forgetting to insert yoke washers (causes loose coil connection)
  • Wrapping the cable too tightly (restricts coil movement)
  • Not fully engaging the spring pins in shaft holes (shaft can collapse during use)

Next Steps After Assembly
