Minelab X-Terra Pro Field Test: Two Months, Three Sites, Four Frequencies

We ran the Minelab X-Terra Pro for two months across three sites: a city park that has been cherry picked since the 1960s, a freshwater beach with a roped off swimming area, and a plowed field where an 1880s farmhouse stood until the county took it down. We were not asking whether a single frequency machine can outdig a Multi-IQ flagship, because it cannot and Minelab does not claim it can. We were asking what an X-TERRA Pro metal detector actually buys you at this price, and whether choosing your own frequency one hunt at a time is a working feature or a line on a spec sheet.

After a few hundred targets, we have an answer. It is a working feature, with one honest catch.

What We Ran

We used the stock V12X 12 inch by 9 inch elliptical Double-D coil, wired headphones in the field and the built in speaker in the water. No aftermarket anything.

The hardware that matters: PRO-SWITCH frequency selection with 5, 10, and 15 kHz available in Park and Field modes and a fixed 8 kHz in Beach mode. Ferrous target IDs from -19 to 0 and non-ferrous from 1 to 99, with 30 discrimination segments for notching. Sensitivity runs 1 to 25. Ground balance offers auto, tracking, and manual. The whole machine is IP68 waterproof to 16 feet, weighs 2.9 pounds, and collapses to 25 inches. The internal 5100 mAh battery charged twice a week through the magnetic USB cable and never came close to dying mid hunt. 

One thing to understand before the site reports: PRO-SWITCH is not multi frequency. You pick one frequency and the machine runs it cleanly. That single decision, made in the parking lot before you start swinging, shaped every hunt in this test.

Site One: The Cherry Picked Park

Settings: Park 1, 15 kHz, sensitivity 19 of 25, ferrous volume turned down two steps, All Tones.

This park has given up its easy silver decades ago. What remains hides next to iron or sits below the depth where casual hunters lose interest.

We started at 15 kHz because the trash here skews small: foil, can slaw, and pull tabs by the pound. The higher frequency sharpened the response on small non-ferrous targets and kept the IDs tight on shallow coins. A power line runs along the east fence, and the machine chattered under it until we ran noise cancel a second time from the menu and dropped sensitivity from 22 to 19. After that it ran quiet for the rest of the test. Do not fight EMI with your ears. Let the machine deal with it.

Nine hours over four visits produced 52 clad coins, six wheat cents, a junk ring, and the find of the whole test: a 1936 Mercury dime at six inches, two feet off a sidewalk that gets pounded every season. It read 86 and 87 and stayed there on every sweep angle. The wheats rang 80 to 82, which matches what copper cents did for us everywhere, and that consistency is the real story of the 1 to 99 scale. Once you learn where your targets live, the numbers mean something.

Where it hurt: deep targets past about seven inches started bouncing. A signal that later proved to be an eight inch memorial cent wandered fifteen points before we dug it. The IDs are honest to about seven inches and advisory after that.

Site Two: The Freshwater Beach

Settings: Beach 1, sensitivity 21, ground balance auto, vibration on, speaker only.

Beach mode locks the frequency at 8 kHz, a setting Minelab tuned for mineralized wet sand, so the frequency decision is made for you here. We hunted the towel line dry, then waded the roped swimming area to chest depth with the control box going under repeatedly. No fogging, no leaks, no drama. The 16 foot rating is for the whole machine, and it held.

Six hours produced over 70 clad coins, four fishing weights, a toe ring, and a thin 10k band at about four inches in the wet sand that came in down in the pull tab range and bounced. Small gold reads like trash on every detector we have ever run, and this one is no exception. If you hunt swim beaches for gold, you dig the pull tab numbers. There is no setting on any machine that changes that.

The handgrip vibration earned its place in chest deep water where the speaker was under the surface. Feeling the hit through the grip instead of guessing at a muffled tone is the difference between a target recovered and a target lost.

The caveat: this was fresh water. Wet salt sand pushes single frequency machines harder, and while Beach mode is tuned for it, you will give up sensitivity on a salt beach that a simultaneous multi frequency machine keeps. Hunters who live near the ocean should weigh the multi frequency options with clear eyes before choosing, and anyone buying primarily for water work should look over the full waterproof lineup to see what the next bracket up buys.

Site Three: The 1880s Farm Field

Settings: Field 2, 5 kHz, sensitivity 23, manual ground balance, five tones.

This is where PRO-SWITCH stopped being a menu option and started being the reason to buy this machine. The field runs to mineralized clay, the targets skew old and conductive, and 5 kHz is the right tool for both. The low frequency punched noticeably deeper on large conductors than 15 kHz did on the same ground, and it calmed the clay down at the same time.

Auto ground balance drifted as the soil changed from the old yard into the plowed rows, so we set it manually and reset it twice per session. Ten hours over five mornings produced an Indian Head cent at five inches, two flat buttons, a suspender clip, a harness buckle, half a harmonica reed plate, and more square nail fragments than we care to count. The Indian Head came in at 79 with a nail four inches away, and the machine called both targets in one pass, coin tone wrapped in iron grunt. That separation surprised us at this price.

The limit showed in the densest iron near the old foundation. There is no recovery speed adjustment on this machine. Your sweep speed is the recovery setting, and in carpet iron you slow way down and still lose targets a faster processor would pull out. That is the trade you accept at the price point, and you should know it going in.

What Annoyed Us

Every field test needs this section, so here is ours.

  • You will pick the wrong frequency sometimes. Choose 5 kHz for depth and you walk over small brass all morning. Choose 15 kHz and the deep coppers go quiet. One frequency at a time means committing, and committing means occasionally being wrong.
  • No recovery speed adjustment. In dense iron you manage with sweep speed and patience, and you still leave targets behind.
  • Deep target IDs wander. Solid to about seven inches, then increasingly a suggestion. Dig the repeatable tones and stop staring at the number.
  • Beach mode does not let you choose the frequency. The 8 kHz fix is sensible, but on a machine sold on frequency choice, losing the choice in an entire mode stings a little.
  • The magnetic charging cable is proprietary. Lose it on a trip and nothing at the gas station will save you. Order a spare with the machine and leave it in the truck.

None of these ended a hunt. All of them belong in the notebook.

Settings We Would Start With

  • Trashy park: Park 1, 15 kHz, sensitivity 18 to 20, ferrous volume low, All Tones, noise cancel before you swing.
  • Freshwater beach or shallow water: Beach 1, sensitivity 20 to 22, ground balance auto, vibration on.
  • Old field or homestead: Field 2, 5 kHz, sensitivity 22 to 24, manual ground balance, five tones or All Tones.
  • Small jewelry and fine gold ground: Park 2 or Field 1 at 15 kHz, sensitivity as high as the site allows, and accept the extra chatter.

The pattern across the whole test: pick the frequency for the site before you leave the truck, run noise cancel, and leave sensitivity lower than pride wants it. This machine rewards a quiet threshold over a hot one.

The Verdict

Pros

  • PRO-SWITCH frequency selection works in practice, not just on the box. 5 kHz on the farm field changed our results.
  • Waterproof to 16 feet, whole machine, tested repeatedly at chest depth without complaint
  • 1 to 99 target IDs are consistent enough to learn and reason from inside seven inches

Who Should Buy It

Buy the X-Terra Pro if you are moving up from a fixed frequency entry machine and want to learn what frequency choice actually does, if you hunt fresh water and want true submersion at a good price, or if you want a light, waterproof backup that will not embarrass itself next to your flagship. It is also the cheapest sensible entry into Minelab's current platform, and the accessory ecosystem that supports it is broad.

Look elsewhere if salt beaches are your home ground or your sites are buried in iron. Bottom Line

The X-Terra Pro is a disciplined machine. It does not pretend to be a flagship, and it does not carry a single feature that exists only for the brochure. What it offers is real waterproofing, real target ID resolution, and a frequency switch that rewards hunters who think about their sites before they swing. Two months in, it has become the machine we grab when the plan involves water, mud, or a long walk, and the one we recommend to anyone who wants a Minelab that earns its keep at a good price point.
