The current software for the Minelab Manticore is build 6.20.0-3.7.1, and if your machine is still on the version it shipped with, it is worth the ten minutes to update. This release added a Stabiliser control for iron-heavy ground, sharper small-gold sensitivity in Goldfield mode, and a stack of smaller improvements that make the detector faster to run. It is free, your saved settings survive the process, and it can be rolled back if you ever want to. Below is what changed, which changes matter in the field, and how to install it.

Is the update worth installing?
Yes, and there is no good reason not to. Every Manticore that comes through our shop gets updated before it ships, and we would tell any owner to do the same. If you hunt trashy relic sites or old home sites, the Stabiliser setting alone changes how the machine behaves. Gold prospectors get a real gain in Goldfield mode. Everyone else at least picks up the stability fixes, extra languages and soft-key shortcuts.
One thing worth knowing before you go looking for something newer: this June 2023 release is the only software update Minelab has issued for the Manticore since launch. If your detector's software information screen shows 6.20.0, you are current.
What the update changed
1. Stabiliser setting
A new control in the All-Terrain search modes, adjustable from 0 to 12. It settles the audio and steadies Target IDs at sites where iron is making the machine false, meaning those phantom high tones over nails and rusty trash that get you digging junk. In our experience this is the most useful change in the release. On iron-saturated ground, a moderate Stabiliser setting cleans up the chatter without forcing you to bury sensitivity. It is the setting we reach for first now on trashy ground.
2. Enhanced Goldfield search mode
Goldfield mode was reworked for noticeably better sensitivity to small, sub-gram gold. That was a fair criticism of the launch software. The Manticore was always a formidable all-terrain machine, but some prospectors felt Goldfield mode left performance on the table, and this closes much of that gap. To be straight about it, a dedicated pulse induction detector still goes deeper on the tiniest nuggets in extreme mineralization, so if nugget hunting is your whole game, our gold detectors collection has purpose-built machines. If you want one detector that handles coins, relics, the beach and gets serious about small gold, the improved Goldfield mode makes the Manticore a much stronger all-rounder.
3. Soft-key shortcuts
You can assign shortcuts to the controls you change most: Search Mode, Flashlight, Display Brightness, Sensitivity Boost, Clear ID Map, Speaker Mute, Recovery Speed and Frequency. It sounds minor until you are standing over a target in fading light and can toggle the flashlight or nudge recovery speed without diving into menus.
4. Ferrous Target IDs in red
A display option that highlights ferrous IDs in red. Small change, but for anyone who reads the screen as much as the audio, iron jumps out at a glance and you spend less time second-guessing a number.
5. Underwater headphone boost
Raises headphone volume when you are using Minelab's waterproof accessory headphones, so faint targets are audible over wave and water noise while wading or in the surf. If you hunt wet, it is a real improvement. Our detecting headphones collection has the compatible waterproof sets.
6. Ten interface languages
English, French, German, Czech, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Hindi.
7. Stability fixes
Better Beach Mode ground balance on dry sand, refined default settings across the search modes, and more reliable wireless audio connection.
How to update your Manticore
The update runs through the Minelab Update Utility, a small free program for Windows 10 or macOS 10.15 and later that handles the whole process automatically. What you need and what to expect:
- A laptop or desktop with a USB 2.0 port. Phones and tablets are not supported.
- The Manticore USB charging cable with the magnetic connector. Check the contacts are clean and the connector is seated properly, because a loose cable is the most common cause of a failed update.
- The coil connected and the detector powered on for the whole update.
- Internet to download the utility, but not to run it. The update itself works offline.
- About ten minutes. The screen shows Software Update in Progress, then goes blank for a stretch while the core software installs and a green LED on the control panel blinks. That is normal. The detector reboots on its own at the end.
- Your saved modes and settings carry over.
- One device at a time. If you also run ML 105 headphones, they have their own separate update utility. Update them too, since it improves connection stability with the Manticore.
If an update is interrupted, do not panic. The detector may power up with a blank screen and a fast-blinking green LED, which just means it is waiting for the update to finish. Restart the utility, reconnect, and run it again.
