Where to download XChange 2
Minelab hosts XChange 2 on its own accessories page and on the support and download pages for both the CTX 3030 and the GPZ 7000, under Software > XChange 2 Application. Grab the latest version there before you start.
Installation is a normal Windows .exe. The installer removes any earlier XChange 2 version and asks for a restart before and after installing, so allow about five minutes. Minelab asks you to register or log in, but the login mainly unlocks the Google Maps layer; the app can be used offline, and your detecting data stays on your own computer.
If your browser blocks the download, that is a security setting, not a broken file. Some browsers block .exe files by default, so allow it for this download or try another browser.
What XChange 2 does
XChange 2 turns your computer into a data management center for a CTX 3030 or GPZ 7000. It is a bridge between the detector and your PC that handles three kinds of data: finds, detector settings and locations.
Everything is stored locally. Minelab does not see your hunting spots or your find data, which matters if you are protective of your locations.
Managing finds and locations
- Add photos and notes to each find, useful for documenting a Civil War button or a nugget with the context of where and how it was found.
- Color-code target types on the map (coins, relics, jewelry, trash) to spot patterns.
- Create unlimited collection folders sorted by location, period or target type.
- Build a searchable record of your entire detecting history.
Planning future hunts
You can create waypoints on the computer's larger screen and transfer them to the detector, which is far easier than entering coordinates on the detector's own display in the field. Existing waypoints can be edited and renamed, and detector settings that worked at one site can be saved and reloaded for similar ground.
Compatible detectors
XChange 2 works with exactly two machines: the CTX 3030 and the GPZ 7000. Both have built-in GPS and data logging. Other Minelab models, including the Equinox 900 and Manticore, do not log GPS data and do not use XChange 2.
System requirements and setup
XChange 2 runs on Windows 10 or 11 only; there is no Mac version. An internet connection is needed for the Google Maps layer, but the core functions work offline once installed. Data transfer uses the USB cable supplied with the CTX 3030 or GPZ 7000; connect the detector to the PC and the software should recognize it.
First-time setup tips
Start by transferring your existing detector data so you can see how everything is organized. Set up your color-coding early and stick to it; consistent categories are what make patterns visible later, like old coins clustering near a particular landscape feature on a permission.
If the detector is not recognized
Use the cable that came with the detector, connect straight to the computer rather than through a hub, and make sure the detector is switched on before opening XChange 2. If it still does not appear, close the program, disconnect, restart the detector, reconnect, and open XChange 2 again.
