The TerraX 12.5 in Heavy Duty Plastic Sand Scoop is a hand scoop made entirely of plastic, with no metal parts. Because it gives no signal of its own, you can pass your detector coil or pinpointer over a loaded scoop to confirm the target is inside before you sift it out. It suits beach hunters working dry and damp sand, and prospectors moving gravel and sand into a pan or classifier.

    Who this scoop is for

This scoop is for detectorists and prospectors who want a light, low-cost recovery tool that does not interfere with a detector. It is a good first scoop, a spare to keep in the truck or kit bag, and an easy tool to hand to a kid or a new detectorist.

For packed wet sand, the surf line, cobble beaches or rocky creek beds, a steel scoop is the better tool: it cuts harder ground and holds up to rocks. TerraX stainless steel and anodized steel scoops, plus long-handled models for working standing up, are in our sand scoops for metal detecting collection.

Key features and what they mean in use

    • All-plastic, non-metallic build. The scoop does not set off your detector or pinpointer, so you can check a scoop of sand or gravel for the target before emptying it.
    • 12.5 in overall length. A short hand scoop, sized for kneeling recoveries and for loading pans and classifiers.
    • Heavy-duty plastic. Does not rust or corrode after saltwater, and rinses clean.
    • Lanyard hole in the handle. Tie it to your belt, pouch or bag so it does not get left behind in the sand.
    • Five colors: black, blue, green, orange and yellow. Bright colors are easy to spot if you set the scoop down on the beach, and a blue scoop gives contrast for spotting gold flakes.

    What is in the box

    • One TerraX 12.5 in plastic sand scoop in the color you choose

Where it works well, and where it does not

    • Works well: dry and damp beach sand, sandbars, sandy parks and tot lots, and moving loose gravel and sand into a gold pan or classifier screen.
    • Less suited: hard-packed wet sand, the surf zone, rocks and cobble, where plastic flexes and a steel scoop cuts better.
    • Tip: a plastic scoop pairs well with a pinpointer. Scoop, check the scoop with the pinpointer, and only sift when you know the target is in it. See our pinpointers collection.

    Gold prospecting use

For prospectors, the scoop is a quick way to move material from a crevice, bank or stream bed into a pan or classifier. Because it is non-metallic, you can also check a scoop of material with a gold detector before panning it. More panning and sluicing gear is in our gold prospecting equipment collection.

The TerraX 12.5" Heavy Duty Plastic Sand Scoop is an essential tool for serious treasure hunters and gold prospectors. This non-metallic scoop ensures your metal detector won't give false signals when scanning through your finds, making target identification faster and more accurate.

    Key Features & Benefits

    • Non-metallic plastic construction eliminates false detector signals during target recovery

    • Heavy-duty plastic material resists rust and corrosion in all weather conditions

    • 12.5-inch overall length provides optimal reach and leverage for digging

    • Built-in lanyard hole prevents accidental loss in the field

    • Available in multiple colors (black, blue, green, orange, yellow) for easy identification

    • Lightweight design reduces fatigue during extended detecting sessions

    Perfect for Multiple Applications

Whether you're beach hunting, coin shooting, or prospecting for gold, this versatile scoop handles it all. The durable plastic construction makes it ideal for saltwater detecting where metal tools would quickly corrode. Gold prospectors especially appreciate how the non-metallic design allows them to check each scoop load with their detector without interference.

The ergonomic design and manageable size make it perfect for both beginners learning proper recovery techniques and experienced detectorists who need reliable gear. Unlike metal scoops that can damage sensitive archaeological finds, this plastic scoop is gentler on delicate targets while still being tough enough for rocky soil and sand.

Can I check a scoop of sand with my pinpointer if I use this plastic scoop?

Yes, the TerraX 12.5 in scoop is all plastic with no metal parts, so it gives no signal and you can check a loaded scoop with your pinpointer or detector coil before you empty it. That tells you the target is in the scoop and saves sifting empty sand. Pinpointers that pair well with a plastic scoop are in our pinpointers collection.

    Answered by Richard T. · October 2026

Is a plastic sand scoop strong enough for wet sand and rocks?

A plastic scoop like the TerraX 12.5 in works well in dry and damp sand and loose gravel, but for hard-packed wet sand, the surf zone, cobble and rocky creek beds a steel scoop is the better choice, since it cuts harder ground and does not flex. Many beach hunters carry both: plastic for dry sand and checking targets, steel for the wet. Stainless and anodized steel options are in our sand scoops for metal detecting collection.

    Answered by Dan P. · October 2026

Which color plastic scoop is best for gold prospecting?

For gold prospecting, the blue TerraX scoop is a good pick, because blue gives strong contrast for spotting small gold flakes in the material you scoop. For beach detecting, orange or yellow is easier to find if you set the scoop down in the sand. Pans and other gear in matching colors are in our gold prospecting equipment collection.
