These are clear 4 mL glass vials with black plastic screw caps, 1-3/8 in long with a 9/16 in outer diameter. Prospectors use them to hold gold flakes, pickers and small samples, and they also work for display, favors and storing very small amounts of liquid. They are sold singly, in packs of 12, or in a 144-count box.

    Who these vials are for

These 4 mL vials suit gold panners and prospectors who want a small, clear container for the color they recover in the field. They are also handy for anyone who sells or gives away small gold samples, since a few flakes are easy to see through clear glass.

If you recover larger amounts of fine gold or small nuggets, a larger vial gives you more room. You can find more vials and cleanup tools in our gold prospecting equipment collection.

    Features

    • Clear, transparent glass, so gold and samples are easy to see
    • Black plastic screw caps that close securely
    • Leak-resistant, so a vial can be stored with water in it
    • Small enough to carry several in a pocket or a panning kit

Using gold vials in the field

Many prospectors keep a vial partly filled with water while panning. Flakes picked up with a snuffer bottle or tweezers drop through the water and settle at the bottom instead of sticking to the glass, and the water makes the gold look larger and brighter for display.

How do I get small gold flakes into a 4 mL vial without losing them?

The easiest way to get small gold flakes into a 4 mL glass vial is to fill the vial about halfway with water first. Lift the flakes from your pan with a snuffer bottle or a wet fingertip and release them at the mouth of the vial; the flakes sink through the water instead of sticking to the dry glass or blowing away. Cap the vial tightly before you move on. Find pans for the rest of your cleanup in our gold pans and panning kits collection.
