Coiltek 17x11 Elite Monoloop Coil for Minelab SD, GP and GPX

The Coiltek 17x11 Elite Monoloop is a large elliptical mono search coil for Minelab's pulse induction gold detectors: the SD, GP and GPX 4000 to 5000 series. Its 17 in x 11 in footprint sweeps a much wider path than the stock 11 in round coil, which makes it a coil for covering open ground and reaching nuggets below the depth of smaller coils.

Who the 17x11 Elite Monoloop suits

This coil suits SD, GP or GPX owners who detect open, relatively clear ground: flats, old diggings with room to swing, and patches where you want to cover ground quickly and reach deeper targets. It is a second or third coil, used alongside a smaller coil for tight spots and small gold.

If you mostly hunt rocky gullies, steep ground or heavily worked patches for small nuggets, a smaller coil is the better choice. The Coiltek Elite-Max elliptical mono coils are Coiltek's current mono line for the same detectors, in 9 in, 10x5 and 14x9 sizes. Key features of the Coiltek 17x11 Elite

• 17x11 in elliptical shape: a long, narrow footprint covers more ground per swing than a round coil of similar width, and the narrower tip fits between rocks and grass clumps better than a large round coil.
• Monoloop winding: a single loop that transmits and receives. On a PI gold detector a mono gives a simple, symmetrical signal and good depth on larger nuggets. The trade-off is more ground noise and interference than a DD in hot ground.
• Pinpointing at the coil centre: a mono responds strongest beneath the centre of the coil, so the target sits under the middle of the 17x11 when the signal peaks.
• Elite series construction: the coil plugs directly into Minelab SD, GP and GPX control boxes with no adapter.

• Minelab GPX 4000, GPX 4500, GPX 4800, GPX 5000

Where the 17x11 Elite Mono works well, and where it does not

Works well: open goldfields with mild to moderate ground, deeper patches that smaller coils have already worked, and long passes where coverage matters more than nimbleness.

Harder going: very mineralized or hot-rock ground, where a mono picks up more ground noise than a DD; areas near power lines or other electrical interference; and dense rocks or brush, where a smaller coil fits better. A coil this size also puts more weight at the end of the shaft than the stock coil, so a harness or bungee helps on long days.

How it compares with nearby Coiltek coils

Coiltek Elite-Max 14x9 Mono: smaller, more maneuverable, and part of Coiltek's current mono line. Choose it if you split time between open ground and tighter spots. It weighs 990 g.

Coiltek 17x11 Anti-Interference: the same 17x11 footprint, wound to resist electrical interference, at about 1018 g. Coiltek recommends running it in DD mode on the GPX 4500 and GPX 5000. Choose it if interference or noisy ground is a regular problem where you detect.
