The Dr. Sluice The Hybrid Sluice is a drop riffle sluice box for gold prospecting that combines the two earlier Dr. Sluice designs in one longer box. Behind a larger indicator mat it carries several of the deep, wide troughs from The Original and the shallower, narrower troughs from The Prospector, so one sluice handles both heavy throughput and fine gold cleanup. It is molded from 4 mm plastic with two 3 mm stainless steel braces, measures 31.5 in long by 9 in wide by 4 in deep, weighs 2.15 lbs, and runs classified or unclassified river gravel.
Who The Hybrid is for, and who should pick the Original or the Prospector
The Hybrid suits a prospector who wants one Dr. Sluice box for both long shoveling sessions and careful fine gold work, and who can carry a 31.5 in box to the creek. The larger indicator mat is the main reason to choose it: material can be shoveled or pumped straight onto it, which is harder to do cleanly on the smaller mats of the other two models.
If you only ever process large volumes of dirt all day and clean out rarely, The Original is enough; its deep troughs hold more concentrate between cleanups. If you work small or low creeks where slow water lets stones pile up in deep troughs, or you need a box that packs short, The Prospector is the lighter, shorter choice with shallow troughs that keep the concentrate volume down. The Hybrid sits between them on trough design and is the one we would hand to someone buying their first Dr. Sluice, because it does not force that choice up front.
What the mat and the two trough shapes do in use
- Larger indicator V mat at the head. It spreads a shovelful across the width of the box before the material reaches the troughs, and it shows you color early so you know the feed rate and slope are right before you commit the rest of the bucket.
- Deep, wide troughs from The Original. These sit first behind the mat and take the bulk of the heavies, so the box can run for a long stretch without clogging or needing a cleanup.
- Shallow, narrow troughs from The Prospector. These sit further down and catch what the deep troughs let past. They hold less material, which keeps the cleanup concentrate small and makes flour gold easier to find in the pan.
- Deep side walls. A surge in the creek is less likely to wash over the side and carry the concentrate out with it.
- 4 mm plastic body with two 3 mm stainless steel braces. At 2.15 lbs it is light to carry for its length, and stiff enough not to flex when it is loaded with wet gravel.
- No riffle hardware, no matting to lift. Cleanup is a matter of tipping the box into a bucket and rinsing the troughs, with nothing to unbolt or peel back.
What is in the box
The Hybrid ships as the sluice body with its indicator mat and braces fitted (as of October 2026). It does not include a stand, classifier, pump or carry bag. If you feed it with a pump rather than a shovel, any small 12 V water pump works; we stock pumps, classifiers and snuffer bottles in our gold prospecting equipment collection.
How The Hybrid differs from The Original and The Prospector
All three Dr. Sluice boxes share the same 4 mm plastic, two stainless braces, deep side walls and a V indicator mat, and all three run classified or unclassified gravel. The differences are in length, mat size and trough mix. The Original is 27.5 in long and 2.5 lbs, with a smaller mat followed by three deep V troughs and then wide, deep rectangular troughs; it is the all day volume box. The Prospector is the shortest and lightest at 24.75 in and 2 lbs, with a slightly larger mat and shallow troughs throughout, for low water and small concentrate. The Hybrid is the longest at 31.5 in and 2.15 lbs, has the largest mat, and carries both trough depths, deep first and shallow after. If The Original is a box for moving dirt and The Prospector is a box for keeping cleanups small, The Hybrid is the one that does a fair amount of both.
