The Dune Scoops Stainless Steel Short Hand Held Sand Scoop is a handmade, one-piece stainless steel beach scoop with a fixed plastic hand grip and 3/8 in hexagonal sifting holes. It is built for kneeling recovery in dry and damp sand, where a hand digger keeps losing the hole to sand falling back in. It suits beach detectorists who want a rust-resistant scoop that fits in a finds bag, and anyone who hunts the towel line and dry sand more than the surf.
Who it is for, and who should look elsewhere
Buy this scoop if you dig your targets on your knees, hunt dry or damp sand, and want stainless steel so a rinse is all the cleanup it needs. It is also a sensible second scoop to keep in the car or a carry-on.
Please note: this scoop is intended for use without a handle. For a standing setup, start with the pole-ready models in the Dune Scoops collection or the long handle options in travel sand scoops.
Key features and what they mean in the sand
- 3/8 in hexagonal holes. Small enough to hold modern US coins, tokens and most rings, so you are not chasing a dime back down the hole. Hex holes leave less flat metal between openings than round holes of the same size, so sand clears a little faster.
- Stainless steel bucket. Resists rust in saltwater and salt air, which galvanized scoops eventually lose to. Rinse in fresh water after a salt session and it stays clean.
- Fixed plastic handle. A short grip for one-handed digging at kneeling height. Handle color and grip style vary between batches.
- Handmade construction. Each scoop is made by hand, so small differences in finish and markings are normal and not a defect.

Compatibility
This scoop is not compatible with handles or poles sold by Serious Detecting. If you want a scoop you can later convert from hand use to a long handle, choose a Dune model sold with mount options, listed in the standard handle sand scoops collection.
Where it works well and where it does not
Dry sand and damp sand above the water line are where this scoop does its best work: fast sifting, no rust, and a size that lives in a finds pouch. In wet packed sand it digs, but a short grip means bending or kneeling for every target, which adds up over a long session. In water it is usable for shallow, calm recoveries but the holes are small for wet sand and it drains slower than a large hex-hole water scoop. Very small studs, thin chains and some earring backs can pass through 3/8 in holes, so check the pile before you dump it.
How it compares to the closest Dune Scoops hand scoops
The Dune Scoops galvanized heavy duty hand scoop is the lower-cost option with larger 5/8 in holes: it sifts faster but small coins and thin rings can slip through, and galvanized steel will eventually rust after salt use. The Dune Scoops Stingray compact stainless scoop is smaller, uses hexagon holes and adds a mount so it can take a Dune long handle later, which makes it the better pick if you want one scoop for both kneeling and standing. This short hand held scoop sits between them: stainless, small holes, fixed grip, no upgrade path to a pole. All three are in the sand scoops collection.
Handle color and grip type may vary. All Dune sand scoops are handmade, so individual variations in color and markings are part of the product. Photos are representative and your scoop may differ slightly from the one pictured.
