About the Garrett AT Pro

The Garrett AT Pro is designed for someone who wants to move beyond basic land detecting. It combines adjustable ground balance, proportional audio, a 0 to 99 numeric target ID and a housing Garrett rates submersible to 10 feet (3 meters), and for someone who regularly searches old homesites, farm fields, freshwater beaches and shallow rivers, those capabilities can be genuinely useful. Garrett lists its operating frequency as 15 kHz, a useful general-purpose frequency for smaller or lower-conductivity objects such as brass buttons, lead bullets, small copper pieces and coins on an old farmstead.

We would not recommend the AT Pro simply because it is more advanced than Garrett's ACE detectors: its extra features matter most when your sites justify them. A 15 kHz frequency also does not automatically mean more depth than a lower one, because target size, conductivity, ground mineralization and coil choice all influence performance.

Garrett AT Pro search modes and key settings

• Standard and Pro audio: six search modes, three Standard modes (Zero, Coins and Custom) with simpler, consistent target responses, and the same three patterns in Pro mode with proportional audio and tone roll audio. Pro audio presents more information through changes in signal strength and sound, which helps someone who likes to make digging decisions by listening carefully, but it does not identify a buried object by itself.
• Iron discrimination and Iron Audio: iron discrimination adjusts from 0 to 40 (the Coins mode preset is 35), notch discrimination is adjustable, and Iron Audio works in the discrimination modes. In a heavily hunted park, Iron Audio can reveal iron responses such as rusty bottle caps that discrimination would otherwise hide. It does not identify every cap correctly, so we would treat it as one piece of information rather than a final answer.
• Ground balance: Fast Track automatic ground balance plus manual adjustment. Moving from a mild park to mineralized farm soil, ground balancing helps compensate for the unwanted ground responses, although highly mineralized soil can still affect target responses and detection depth.
• Sensitivity, frequency adjust and pinpoint: eight sensitivity settings, four slightly different frequencies (F1 to F4), and electronic pinpointing in a non-motion all metal mode.
• Target ID: a 0 to 99 numeric scale with a 20-segment graphic scale above it.

Water and beach hunting with the Garrett AT Pro

Garrett rates the AT Pro submersible to 10 feet (3 meters) in fresh and salt water, and its manual says that exceeding that depth voids the warranty. The MS-2 headphones are a different matter: Garrett's manual says the provided headphones are for dry use only, and for underwater audio Garrett makes its own waterproof headphones (Garrett part 2202100). On a freshwater swimming beach you can start in dry sand, move into the shallows and keep searching deeper water within that rating. We see the AT Pro as primarily a freshwater detector: it can be used in some saltwater conditions with careful adjustment, but wet ocean sand and conductive salt water can present challenges. Where the Garrett AT Pro works well, and where it does not

Coin hunting, relic hunting, old homesites and freshwater beaches suit the AT Pro best. Around an old farmhouse with hundreds of rusty nails, a brass button can lie right next to an iron fragment; adjustable discrimination, Iron Audio, proportional audio and ground balance help you investigate those questionable signals, but iron masking remains a limitation, and the AT Pro cannot reliably detect every good object hidden among iron. The AT Pro is a versatile land and freshwater detector rather than a specialized natural gold prospecting machine; for small nuggets, the Garrett AT Gold runs at 18 kHz with a smaller 5 x 8 inch coil.

Garrett AT Pro coil, batteries and build

The 8.5 x 11 inch PROformance Double-D searchcoil is a practical general-purpose size that gives useful coverage on a large farm field. Around an old foundation crowded with iron, a smaller compatible Garrett coil may be easier to maneuver and may help isolate closely spaced targets. Garrett's 6 x 11 inch DD Viper searchcoil (Garrett part 2224000) is one such coil, designed for the AT Pro, AT Gold and AT Max. A larger coil is not automatically better, so we would choose by your actual sites; our coil guide explains what size and shape change. Garrett lists the AT Pro at 3.03 lbs (1.4 kg) with a stem adjusting from 43 to 56 inches (1.09 to 1.4 m). Four AA batteries run it for 20 to 40 hours depending on battery type and quality; NiMH rechargeables work, and Garrett advises removing the batteries for storage longer than 30 days.

Garrett AT Pro or AT Max

The Garrett AT Max runs at 13.6 kHz and adds built-in Z-Lynk wireless audio, a backlit display, a true All Metal mode, ground balance with 175 points of resolution and an automatic Ground Balance Window. For someone who regularly detects in difficult ground or wants integrated wireless audio, those features may be worthwhile. Getting started with the Garrett AT Pro

On a first AT series detector, we would start in a Standard mode to learn the target ID system and the basic responses, then try Pro audio as the sounds become familiar. For rings and other jewelry on a swimming beach, keep discrimination light: gold jewelry can produce responses similar to aluminum trash, and rejecting too many target ranges can mean walking past a ring.
