    Best for

Highlighted icons show the targets, ground and experience level this detector is built for.

The Garrett AT Pro is the detector most people step up to when a starter machine stops telling them enough about what is under the coil. It runs at 15 kHz, reads targets on a 0 to 99 scale, and is sealed to 10 feet, so the same detector works a plowed field on Saturday and a swimming hole on Sunday. This listing is an open box unit, which is the least expensive way into an AT Pro without buying used from a stranger.

    What Open Box Means Here

Open box units are complete, inspected by our team, and fully functional, and this detector carries the same 3 year Garrett warranty as a sealed one. You are paying less because the carton was opened, not because anything is missing or worn. If you would rather have factory sealed packaging, the new Garrett AT Pro is in stock as well.

Is the AT Pro the Right Detector for You

Buy the AT Pro if you hunt coins, relics, and jewelry across parks, fields, shorelines, and shallow fresh water, and you want direct control over iron discrimination and ground balance without a menu system to learn first.

There are three cases where something else serves you better. If you want wireless audio without adding a separate transmitter, the AT Max has Z-Lynk built in, and our Garrett AT Max vs AT Pro comparison puts the two side by side. If nugget hunting is the main goal, a higher frequency machine from our gold detectors range will hear small gold that a 15 kHz machine runs past. And if nearly every trip is a saltwater beach, a single frequency VLF chatters on wet salt sand, and you will spend the day backing sensitivity down instead of digging.

Using the AT Pro in the Field

    Iron discrimination and Iron Audio

High-Res Iron Discrimination gives you 40 levels of iron rejection rather than a coarse notch, which is what old sites demand when a rusted nail sits an inch from the target you want. Iron Audio lets you hear the iron you have discriminated out instead of silencing it, so you can tell a flat bottle cap from a coin rather than walking away from both. Turn it on once a site starts producing masked signals, and leave it off when you are covering clean ground and want a quiet machine.

    Standard and Professional modes

Six search modes cover Custom, Zero, and Coins, and each runs in either Standard or Professional mode. Standard gives you a plain beep on a good target. Pro Mode Audio adds proportional response and Tone Roll, so signal strength and target character come through in the audio the way they would in a true all metal mode. Most people run Standard while they are learning what the target ID numbers mean, then move to Pro once they trust their ears more than the screen.

    Ground balance and coil choice

Ground balance is both automatic and manually adjustable, so mineralized soil that would false out a fixed ground balance machine stays workable. The 8.5 by 11 inch PROformance DD search coil is elliptical and open framed, which covers ground quickly and handles mineralization better than a concentric coil of the same footprint. Tight, trashy sites are the exception, where a smaller coil separates targets more cleanly. Our metal detector coil guide explains the trade off, and the 6 by 11 inch Viper coil fits this detector directly.

    One limit on the waterproofing

The detector housing, connectors, and coil are sealed to a maximum 10 foot depth, so wading and shallow snorkeling are within spec. The included Master Sound 2 headphones are approved for land use only, so they stay on the bank once you go in past your knees.

Will the Garrett AT Pro find gold?

Yes, the Garrett AT Pro will find gold, with a caveat on size. Its 15 kHz frequency sits at the low end of the 15 to 20 kHz band Garrett recommends for gold jewelry and moderately sized nuggets, so rings, chains, and pickers register well. Small flake gold is where it falls short; that calls for a higher frequency machine with a true all metal mode, such as the 18 kHz Garrett AT Gold. Compare options in our gold detectors collection.

What size coil is best for the Garrett AT Pro, the 8.5 x 11 or the 5 x 8?

The best coil size for the Garrett AT Pro depends on the ground. The stock 8.5 by 11 inch PROformance DD covers open parks, fields, and beaches faster and reaches deeper on coin size targets, so keep it for most hunting. The 5 by 8 inch DD separates targets more cleanly in trashy sites, old house lots, and tight spots, and weighs less on the arm. Both are submersible with the AT Pro. Browse both in our search coils collection.

Which is better, the Garrett ACE 400 or the Garrett AT Pro?

The Garrett AT Pro is the better detector for most people willing to spend more; the Garrett ACE 400 is the better value if you only hunt dry land. The AT Pro is waterproof to 10 feet, runs 15 kHz with 40 iron discrimination levels, and has automatic and manual ground balance for mineralized soil. The ACE 400 runs 10 kHz with 4 iron segments, has a submersible coil but a non-waterproof control box, and a fixed ground balance. See both in our Garrett collection.
