Our military discount applies to the Minelab SDC 2300, a folding MPF pulse induction gold detector for prospectors after small natural gold in mineralized ground. Minelab pairs it with an 8 inch round Monoloop coil and automatic ground tracking, and Minelab rates the detector waterproof to 3 meters (10 feet).
Military Discount Eligibility
Active or Retired Military can receive a 15% discount on the purchase of a Minelab SDC 2300 Metal Detector. The discount shows in your cart once you add the Minelab SDC 2300 to it. About the Minelab SDC 2300
We like the SDC 2300 because it was designed around a practical prospecting problem: small natural gold is hard to detect in mineralized ground, and some of the most promising spots are hard to reach. Minelab pairs its MPF pulse induction, which switches very fast between transmit and receive for sharper detection of very small gold, with an 8 inch round Monoloop coil, automatic ground tracking and a waterproof build. It asks for few settings. We would not call it the best detector for every goldfield; its strengths are small gold sensitivity, rugged construction, waterproofing and portability.
Minelab SDC 2300 modes and controls
- Normal and Salt: Normal gives five sensitivity levels for typical mineralized goldfields; Salt gives three, for conductive ground affected by salts. Salt is not another high sensitivity option, so we would choose it only when the ground calls for it.
- Ground tracking and Noise Cancel: the detector tracks changing soil automatically and has a one press Noise Cancel button. Tracking does not erase every ground response, and strong interference can still mean lowering sensitivity or moving away from the source.
- LEDs and audio: 9 LED indicators show detection responses, battery level and threshold, with a separate low battery warning. Minelab says a soft, low tone points to a small or deep target and a loud, high tone to a larger or shallower one. The LEDs do not identify gold, and the detector has no conventional discrimination.
- Threshold and pitch: nine threshold levels and a low or high pitch. We would keep the threshold comfortable and audible rather than loud, and pick the pitch you hear best; pitch changes the sound, not the depth.
Small gold in worked ground and creek beds
Old goldfields often still hold small pieces after the larger nuggets are gone, in shallow gravel, exposed bedrock and the cracks of a dry creek. Those targets give weak signals, and the SDC 2300 was built with them in mind, yet a nugget's size, shape, depth and orientation still decide whether it can be heard, and no detector promises them all. We would look at worked ground only where history and geology support it, putting research first. In a wet creek the waterproof build keeps the coil working in the gravel and shallow water where gold settles.
Built for remote, rough ground
Minelab uses military grade materials and carbon fiber shafts on the SDC 2300, and its sealed housing is made for mud, dust and water. On a long walk into remote country the folded detector rides in a pack and opens out quickly at the creek. Careful handling and proper maintenance still pay off, because tough is not the same as indestructible.
Water, folding and power
Minelab rates the SDC 2300 waterproof to 3 meters (10 feet) and seals its electronics, so within that rating the control box needs no protection as you go from dry ground into wet gravel and shallow water. Working under water needs waterproof headphones; we would not assume ordinary wired headphones are waterproof. The hinged telescopic design folds to 40 cm (15.7 inches) without taking anything apart, and the detector weighs 2.3 kg (5.1 lb), so its advantage is compactness and toughness rather than low weight. The supplied 7.4 V, 4200 mAh lithium-ion pack gives up to 8 hours, and the detector also runs on four C-cell alkaline batteries.
Where the Minelab SDC 2300 fits, and where it does not
The SDC 2300 makes the most sense in mineralized creek beds, rocky gullies and remote ground where small natural gold is the target and the compact coil can work around rocks and narrow channels. It is a specialized gold detector, not a coin or beach jewelry machine: without conventional target ID or discrimination, a park or a busy ocean beach full of pull tabs and bottle caps would keep you digging trash. For broad open goldfields and interchangeable coils, see the Minelab GPX 6000.
Getting started with the Minelab SDC 2300
We would start in Normal and save Salt for ground that calls for it, keep the threshold comfortable and audible, and expect to dig some lead and iron along the way, because the SDC 2300 detects metal but does not identify it.
