Minelab VANQUISH 460 Multi-IQ Waterproof Metal Detector, V10X Coil

The Minelab VANQUISH 460 is a waterproof Multi-IQ simultaneous multi-frequency metal detector for coins, jewelry and relics in parks, fields and on the beach. It sits between the Minelab VANQUISH 360 and the Minelab VANQUISH 560 in Minelab's VANQUISH 60 Series, and it adds the controls the 360 leaves out: adjustable Iron Bias (0, 1 and 2), 30 discrimination segments, 10 sensitivity levels, ground balance with a user-started Auto Ground Balance, and a customizable User Profile. Minelab rates it IP68, submersible to 5 meters (16 feet), lists it at 1.16 kg (2.6 lb), and ships it with the V10X 10 x 7 inch Double-D coil and wired headphones. Who the Minelab VANQUISH 460 is for

We see the VANQUISH 460 as the sweet spot for many people entering the hobby. It keeps the 360's approachable operation and adds ground balance with a user-started Auto Ground Balance, adjustable Iron Bias, 30 discrimination segments and Bluetooth LE Audio compatibility: useful controls without unnecessary complexity.

We recommend it to many beginners who are serious about staying with the hobby. The reason is not that it automatically finds more than the 360; it gives you more adjustment options when the ground or the targets become challenging.

Minelab VANQUISH 460 or VANQUISH 360

When someone asks how the VANQUISH 460 differs from the 360, we explain that the biggest differences are not about depth. Both use Multi-IQ, and the 360 is also waterproof to 16 feet. The differences are mainly adjustment options, target information and included equipment. The 360 is for someone who wants to try metal detecting, take a detector on vacation or search occasionally; we recommend the 460 for someone who plans to detect regularly and wants useful controls without unnecessary complexity.

Minelab VANQUISH 460 settings that matter in the field

• Iron Bias (0, 1, 2): Iron Bias helps the detector classify targets that give a mixed ferrous and non-ferrous response, such as the rusty bottle caps that litter an older park. The VANQUISH 460 has three settings, 0, 1 and 2. Minelab's default is 2 in Park, Beach and the User Profile, and 0 in Field mode. A higher setting can help reject troublesome iron, but there is a tradeoff: with a coin lying right next to a rusty nail, aggressive iron rejection makes the detector less likely to report the coin clearly.
• Ground balance (-9 to 99): different soils carry different levels of mineralization, and a detector can behave differently in a mild park than on an older property with more mineralized ground. Ground balance compensates for the ground's response so genuine metal targets are easier to recognize. On the VANQUISH 460 you start Auto Ground Balance yourself by holding the Plus button while pumping the coil over clean ground. In Beach mode the 460 tracks the ground automatically, and that tracking cannot be switched off. Minelab notes that a ground balance should rarely be needed.
• Discrimination (30 segments): the VANQUISH 460 splits its 119 Target IDs (-19 to 99) into 30 segments of four IDs each, against six fixed segments on the 360, and you can accept or reject each segment, or reject a target on the spot. If one type of junk keeps showing up in a park, you can reject the range where it reads. We caution against rejecting too many ranges, though, especially when you are looking for gold jewelry.
• Noise cancel and sensitivity (1 to 10): the 460 runs an automatic noise cancel across 19 channels every time it powers on. Sensitivity has ten levels, with a default of 8.
• Audio (3 tones, volume 1 to 10): three target tones, and iron volume is fixed on the 460; the VANQUISH 560 is the model with more detailed audio controls.
• Vibration, backlight and flashlight: the VANQUISH 460 has handgrip vibration. The display has a red backlight with a keypad backlight, and the control box has a built-in flashlight.

Minelab VANQUISH 460 search modes and User Profile

The VANQUISH 460 has three search modes, Park, Field and Beach, plus a customizable User Profile. Begin with the mode that fits your location.

• Park: where we would start for general coin hunting in parks and yards. Minelab gives it a lower recovery speed for depth and recommends it for discriminating in trash and for freshwater beaches.
• Field: Minelab describes it as having enhanced sensitivity to fine metal relics and excellent unmasking of targets among dense ancient iron trash, with a higher recovery speed and a lower Iron Bias. It also rejects coke.
• Beach: for beach environments, including challenging wet saltwater sand. It gives residual salt a Target ID of 0 and tracks the ground automatically.
• User Profile: store your own version of Park, Field or Beach. Only the User Profile keeps its changes after power-off.

An All Metal shortcut button switches off discrimination over the current mode so every target is heard; it turns off again at every power-on.

Beach and water hunting with the Minelab VANQUISH 460

The 460 combines Multi-IQ with an IP68 housing rated to 5 meters (16 feet), so you can search dry sand, wet sand and shallow water at lakes, rivers and the Great Lakes within its waterproof limits. See our waterproof metal detectors.

Wet saltwater sand is challenging because conductive saltwater produces a ground response that interferes with target detection. Multi-IQ and Beach mode help the 460 manage it, and on a vacation beach you can work the dry sand and then move toward the wet sand near the surf. Severe mineralization, black sand and electrical interference can still affect performance. The detector being waterproof does not mean every accessory is waterproof. The wired headphones in the box are not automatically suitable for underwater use. For underwater detecting, Minelab specifies its 3.5 mm waterproof headphones (part 3011-0372), which it lists as compatible with the VANQUISH 60 Series; the headphone socket can be submerged with its dust cap on. Do not take the detector underwater while it is charging or running from a power bank.

One mistake to avoid with the Minelab VANQUISH 460

The mistake we warn beginners about most is rejecting too many targets. Picture an older park where coins are mixed with rusty nails and bottle caps: it is tempting to reject every questionable signal, but that is how good targets get missed, especially gold jewelry. We would start in Park mode, learn how Iron Bias affects those questionable signals and keep discrimination fairly open.

Minelab VANQUISH 460 weight, battery and build

Minelab lists the VANQUISH 460 at 1.16 kg (2.6 lb). The aluminum and fiberglass S-bend shafts with camlocks extend to 142 cm (56 inches) and collapse to 79.5 cm (31.2 inches). The display is a monochrome LCD with a red backlight.

The 3.7 V, 4500 mAh lithium-ion battery is built in. Minelab gives approximately 10 hours of use, less with the backlight or flashlight on. Charging from flat takes about 7 hours with a 1 A, 5 V USB charger, using the USB-C magnetic charging cable in the box. You can detect while running from a power bank, but not underwater. Minelab's manual says replacement batteries can be supplied and installed by a Minelab Authorized Service Center. Software updates install over the same cable.

Coils and accessories that fit the Minelab VANQUISH 460

Search coils: the V10X 10 x 7 inch elliptical Double-D in the box is the standard coil. A larger coil covers more ground with each sweep in a big open field, but around picnic tables, trees or an old property full of scattered debris the V10X is easier to maneuver, and its compact detection footprint helps when you investigate closely spaced targets. Minelab lists six supported coils for the VANQUISH 460: the V8X (8 x 5 inch elliptical Double-D, part 3011-0457), the V10X (part 3011-0458), the V12X (12 x 9 inch elliptical Double-D, part 3011-0459), and the EQX 06, EQX 11 and EQX 15. Headphones: the VANQUISH 460 has a built-in speaker, a 3.5 mm (1/8 inch) headphone socket with a waterproof dust cap, and Bluetooth LE Audio. Minelab says the 460 is only compatible with headphones that support Bluetooth LE Audio with the LC3 codec, and recommends its ML60 earbuds; standard Bluetooth headphones do not work. Not every pair of Bluetooth headphones supports LE Audio, so do not assume your existing wireless headphones will work. Wired headphones are in the box, so you do not need wireless ones right away. Pinpointing: the VANQUISH 460 has a pinpoint function and a 5-level depth indicator that Minelab calls a guide only. A separate handheld pinpointer locates a coin in a shallow hole quickly, instead of you checking handfuls of soil with the full-size detector.

Minelab VANQUISH 460 or VANQUISH 560

The VANQUISH 560 adds a fourth Iron Bias setting (-1), five target tones, adjustable iron volume and the larger V12X 12 x 9 inch coil as standard. The 460 already provides Multi-IQ, waterproofing, ground balancing, adjustable Iron Bias and wireless audio compatibility. If you already know you will spend substantial time detecting and want a larger coil and more detailed audio controls, we would point you to the 560.

Where the Minelab VANQUISH 460 works well, and where it does not

Freshwater beaches, lakes and streams: the IP68 rating to 5 meters covers shallow water, and Minelab recommends Park mode for freshwater; Minelab's waterproof headphones are the ones to use underwater.

Saltwater beaches: usable, including wet sand, in Beach mode.
