The Nokta LG28 (part 17000172) is the 28 cm (11 in) round Double-D search coil for the original Nokta Legend. It is the general-purpose size for the Legend: wide enough to cover a park or field quickly and deep on coin-sized targets, round enough to pinpoint cleanly and work along fences and tree lines. It is waterproof, and Nokta ships it with a coil cover and the coil mounting hardware. It suits Legend owners whose detector came with the 12 x 9 in LG30 and who want a round 11 in for everyday hunting, and anyone replacing a worn or damaged LG28.

    Who the LG28 is for

Owners of the original Nokta Legend who hunt parks, fields, beaches and old homesites and want one coil that does most jobs. Nokta's current Legend packages ship with the LG30, and the Pro Pack adds the 6 in LG15; the LG28 is the round middle size many detectorists prefer for balance and pinpointing.

It does not fit the Nokta Legend 2, which uses Nokta's LD series coils; the Legend 2's 11 in coil is the LD28, a different part. If your sites are trashy and iron-choked, the 6 in LG15 or the 9.5 x 6 in LG24 separates targets better. If you want maximum depth on big relics in open ground, the 13.5 x 12.5 in LG35 is the step up. All of them are in our metal detector search coils collection.

Key features and what they mean in use

    • Double-D winding: a narrow blade-shaped detection field down the center of the coil, which stays steadier than a concentric on mineralized ground and wet salt sand and lets you keep sensitivity higher. Our metal detector technologies page explains how.
    • 28 cm (11 in) round: good coverage per sweep and the easiest DD size to pinpoint with. A round coil works tight to walls, fences and tree trunks better than a long ellipse.
    • Waterproof: Nokta lists the Legend as fully submersible to 5 m (16 ft), and the LG28 is a waterproof coil built for that use. Rinse coil and cover in fresh water after salt.
    • Cover and hardware included: the coil arrives with its cover and the bolt and washers, ready to mount on the Legend lower rod.

    What is in the box

    • Nokta LG28 28 cm (11 in) DD waterproof search coil with cable
    • LG28 coil cover
    • Coil mounting hardware

Not included: lower rod or detector. A replacement LG28 cover is also sold on its own.

    Compatibility

    • Fits: Nokta Legend (original), all packages
    • Does not fit: Nokta Legend 2 (LD series coils), Simplex, Simplex ULTRA, Score or any other Nokta detector; each has its own coil family. Other Nokta parts are in our Nokta collection.

Where the LG28 works well and where it does not

    • Parks, fields and old homesites: the all-round choice; depth on coins and relics with coverage that keeps the pace up.
    • Beaches and shallow water: the DD field handles wet salt sand, and the coil and detector can go under. Pull the cover and rinse grit out after each wet hunt.
    • Mineralized ground: steadier than a concentric, though the Legend's ground balance and multi-frequency do most of the work here whichever coil you run.
    • Dense iron and trash: an 11 in coil sees several targets at once. Slow down or switch to the LG15 or LG24.
    • Brush and tight spots: workable, but the smaller coils are easier to steer.

How it differs from the other Legend coils

LG15 (6 in round): the trash and tight-spot coil, least coverage. LG24 (9.5 x 6 in elliptical): a slim coil for iron-scattered sites and between obstacles. LG28 (11 in round, this coil): the general-purpose size, best pinpointing of the larger coils. LG30 (12 x 9 in elliptical): the current standard coil, slightly more coverage in an elliptical shape. LG35 (13.5 x 12.5 in): the big-field, deep-relic coil, heaviest to swing. All five are DD and waterproof, so the choice comes down to coverage against separation and weight.

Which metal detectors is the LG28 coil compatible with?

The LG28 11-inch DD coil is compatible exclusively with the Nokta Legend metal detector. It installs directly on the Legend lower rod using the included mounting hardware and requires no firmware updates or manual adjustments. The coil is not compatible with other Nokta models such as the Simplex, Anfibio, or Impact series. If you own a different Nokta detector, browse our full selection of Nokta metal detectors to confirm coil compatibility for your model.

Is the LG28 coil fully waterproof?

The LG28 coil is fully waterproof and matches the Nokta Legend detector's submersible rating. You can hunt in streams, shallow water, wet sand, and the surf zone without worry. The coil's waterproof construction handles saltwater beach environments and freshwater wading, making it a solid choice for underwater metal detecting and wet-sand hunting. The included coil cover protects against abrasive sand and rocks that wear through the coil shell over repeated beach hunts.

What's the detection depth difference between the LG28 and the stock Legend coil?

The LG28 11-inch coil provides deeper detection range on coin-sized and larger targets compared to the stock coil, particularly in open ground and mineralized soil. Detectorists report that the LG28 11-inch coil provides deeper detection range on coin-sized and larger targets compared to smaller stock options, keeping target identification stable even when pushing through tough ground mineralization. The DD configuration's ground-balancing advantage maintains stable target ID at depth in challenging ground conditions. Actual depth varies with target size, orientation, soil mineralization, and detector settings.

Does the LG28 come with a protective coil cover?

Every LG28 coil ships with a protective coil cover and all necessary mounting hardware for immediate installation on your Legend lower rod. The included cover guards the coil shell against rocks, roots, and abrasive sand that wear through epoxy during field use. We recommend installing the cover before your first hunt to extend the coil's lifespan, especially if you hunt beaches, rocky sites, or areas with exposed roots and debris.

How does the LG28 perform in trashy sites compared to smaller coils?

The LG28's 11-inch footprint provides wider ground coverage than smaller coils but sacrifices some target separation in densely trashy sites. If you hunt parks with heavy iron scatter, nail beds at old home foundations, or playground equipment clusters, the 6-inch LG15 or 9.5x6 LG24 isolate individual targets more effectively by reducing the detection zone. The LG28 excels in open fields, beaches, and historical sites where target density is lower and ground coverage matters more than pinpoint separation.

    Answered by John W. · May 2026

What mounting hardware is included with the LG28?

The LG28 coil includes all mounting hardware required for direct installation on the Nokta Legend lower rod. The hardware set contains the coil bolt, washers, and any necessary hardware for a secure connection. Installation takes a few minutes and requires no special tools or technical knowledge. The coil is plug-and-play, no firmware updates or manual adjustments are needed after mounting.

    Answered by Dan P. · May 2026

Can I use the LG28 for gold prospecting?

The LG28 coil works for gold prospecting when paired with the Nokta Legend's multi-frequency modes, which improve sensitivity to small gold targets compared to single-frequency detectors. The 11-inch DD configuration handles mineralized ground common in gold country, but the larger footprint reduces sensitivity to sub-gram nuggets compared to smaller high-frequency coils purpose-built for prospecting. If gold prospecting is your primary focus, consider a dedicated gold detector or a smaller coil like the LG15 for tighter target isolation on small nuggets.

    Answered by John W. · May 2026

Does the LG28 require any firmware updates to work with the Legend?

The LG28 coil requires no firmware updates or manual adjustments to work with the Nokta Legend. It is a plug-and-play accessory that installs directly on the Legend lower rod using the included mounting hardware. Once mounted, the detector recognizes the coil automatically and you can start hunting immediately. Nokta designs all Legend coils for seamless compatibility with the detector's existing firmware and multi-frequency platform.

    Answered by Richard T. · May 2026

How does the DD coil configuration benefit mineralized ground hunting?

The DD (Double-D) coil configuration uses overlapping transmit and receive windings that cancel ground mineralization interference while preserving target response. This geometry maintains stable target ID in red clay, black sand, volcanic soils, and iron-rich ground where concentric coils produce false signals and unstable VDI readings. The LG28's DD design is the reason it excels on relic sites, beaches, and historical grounds with challenging soil conditions. Learn more about metal detector search coils and how geometry affects ground balance and target separation.
