What we like about the Quest Scuba Tector Pro is that it was designed for compact underwater detecting rather than ordinary coin hunting on land. It is a pulse induction detector, and Quest rates it waterproof to 60 m (197 ft). We particularly like it for swimming areas, shallow water and dives.

Quest Scuba Tector Pro controls

The Pro has no separate control box. Press and hold the power button to switch it on or off, and use the mode button to switch alarm modes and adjust sensitivity. Alerts come as sound only, vibration only, or sound and vibration, and sensitivity has levels 1, 2 and 3 plus Boost. It has a Snorkeling mode for under 10 m (33 ft) and a Dive mode for deeper than 10 m (33 ft), where Motion Control keeps the detector usable when water pressure works against the buttons. A loss alert helps the detector come home from every dive. The OLED display shows simple status feedback, and low-battery feedback is visible on the body. Quest calls it stable in saltwater, and the anchor ring with its lanyard keeps the detector under control while you search underwater.

The 95 kHz pulse induction circuit also stays stable in freshwater and mineralized black sand. The built-in Li-Po battery runs 10 to 14 hours per charge. To charge, unscrew the battery cap and plug a USB-C cable into the port inside, using a USB wall charger, and screw the cap in tightly before every dive. Folded, the Pro is about 25 cm (10 inch) long and weighs under 0.45 kg (1 lb).

What matters on the Quest Scuba Tector Pro

Pulse induction in saltwater: conductive saltwater can interfere with some metal detectors, and pulse induction is generally well suited to a saltwater swimming area. The Pro tells you there is metal under the coil; it does not give a target ID or discrimination to sort a gold ring from a bottle cap, so expect to recover what it finds.

The folding head: the search head folds on a 180 degree hinge, which helps divers who need compact equipment. Carrying dive gear to a remote beach, a detector that folds small is easier to pack.

Two ways to use it: use the anchor ring for control underwater, or fit the rod adaptor for reach from the beach. We like that flexibility. Quest also offers a round coil for wide scanning and a narrow coil for tight spaces.

The depth rating: the 60 m rating is useful for trained divers, but it describes the equipment, not how safe it is to dive to that depth.
