XP DEUS II Metal Detector (DEUS 2)

The XP DEUS II (Deus 2) is a fully wireless multi-frequency metal detector: FMF simultaneous multi-frequency or 49 single frequencies from 4 to 45 kHz, 12 factory programs and coils rated IP68 to 20 m (66 ft), with a starting weight of 750 g (1.65 lb). It suits relic hunters, beach hunters and divers who want one detector for land and water. The ICON and ICONX run on the same FMF platform with simpler controls, and the original DEUS runs one frequency at a time. Shop our DEUS II RC, WS6 ST Master and RC with headphones setups, plus FMF and HF2 coils, headphones and parts.

XP DEUS II Metal Detector Overview

The XP DEUS II runs FMF (Fast Multi Frequency), processing several frequencies at the same time, or any of 49 single frequencies from 4 to 45 kHz in the DEUS MONO program. It has 12 factory programs, including Relic, Diving, Beach and Beach Sens, and 12 user slots. Water ratings differ by part: XP rates the FMF coils and the BH-01 bone conduction headset IP68 to 20 m (66 ft), and the RC remote to 20 m with its red diving cap or 1 m with the gray cap; the aerial antenna is needed when the coil is submerged. The WS6 ST and WSA ST headphones are rainproof, and the WSA-XL ST is rated to 1 m but not made for diving. XP gives a starting weight of 750 g (1.65 lb), with the WS6 Master and 9 inch coil. Battery life runs 8 to 20 hours for the coil, depending on program and frequency; 15 to 30 hours for the RC, depending on audio output; and about 15 hours for the headphones. Software updates install over USB with an Internet connection. XP covers the DEUS II for 5 years, with 2 years on batteries, and makes it in France.

XP DEUS II vs the Original XP DEUS: Which Should You Buy?

XP still sells the original DEUS, which runs one frequency at a time: 35 frequencies from 3.7 to 27.7 kHz with an X35 coil. The DEUS II adds simultaneous FMF, higher frequencies with the HF2 coil, coils waterproof to 20 m instead of 6 m, an RC remote that can go under water, and Beach and Beach Sens programs for wet salt sand. The two use separate coil families: XP lists the FMF coils for the DEUS II, and the X35 and HF coils for the DEUS and ORX.

If you hunt saltwater beaches, wade or dive, or want multi-frequency, we recommend the DEUS II. If you mainly hunt inland fields and old homesites and like choosing one frequency for the site, the original DEUS is still a capable choice. If you want FMF with simpler controls, look at the XP ICON and XP ICONX: XP rates them waterproof to 5 m and builds them into the DEUS II FMF ecosystem of coils, ST headphones and the MI-6 pinpointer.

XP DEUS II, Best For:

  • Relic hunters on iron-heavy homesites who want fine control over Reactivity, Iron Volume and audio
  • Saltwater beach hunters, with the Beach and Beach Sens programs
  • Wading and diving, with the RC on its red cap and the BH-01 headset

Original XP DEUS, Best For:

  • Inland coin and relic hunting in fields, parks and old homesites
  • Detectorists who want a light wireless detector and like picking a single frequency
  • Owners who already run X35 or HF coils and want to stay with that coil family

Choosing a DEUS II Setup: RC, WS6 ST Master or Both

Every DEUS II setup is the same detector with a different way to control and hear it. The RC package uses the wireless remote, with its own screen and full menus, and it is the control unit for wading and diving. The WS6 ST Master runs from the WS6 ST module on the headphones, which has its own screen and menus. XP calls the WS6 Master its lightest and most compact DEUS II configuration, built for land and beach, and the WS6 ST is rainproof, not submersible. An RC with WS6 ST puts both in one box: with the RC as master the WS6 ST works as headphones, and on its own it runs the detector. We also stock the original WS6 Master with XP's earlier, non-ST WS6 headphones; XP's stereo audio features need an ST headset.

The WSA ST and WSA-XL ST are audio-only and need the RC or a WS6 ST or WS6 Master. Our Which XP DEUS II to Buy guide sorts out the setup in three questions.

Key Features That Matter in the Field

Reactivity (0 to 5, in 9 levels) sets how quickly the DEUS II responds to nearby targets. Near nails, a faster setting helps separate close targets. Iron Volume (0 to 10) lets you hear iron at a lower level instead of losing that information. Audio options include PWM and SQUARE, 1 to 5 tones plus Pitch and Full Tones, and a 4-band equalizer on each audio output. Ground balance runs as Tracking, Grab or Manual (Manual in DEUS MONO), sensitivity runs from 0 to 99, and the frequency shift and automatic scan help near power lines. In our experience the DEUS II's real strength is this flexibility on iron-heavy sites, so we recommend starting with a factory program and changing one setting at a time.

Where the XP DEUS II Works Best and Its Limits

The DEUS II suits old homesites, heavily hunted parks, farm fields, saltwater beaches and water hunting; its Beach programs are one of its biggest improvements over the original DEUS. It asks more of the operator than a power-on-and-go detector: Reactivity, ground balance, audio and notch settings interact, and someone who hunts clean parks a few times a year may never need most of them. It does not see through every nail, black sand and severe mineralization can still affect it, and a WS6 ST Master is not a dive setup because the WS6 ST is rainproof only. For large, deep objects rather than coins, the XP XTREM Hunter coil set pairs with the DEUS II remote (software 2.0 or higher) as a two-box deep seeking system.

Coils and Accessories That Fit the XP DEUS II

Four XP FMF coils fit the DEUS II: the 9 inch (22.5 cm) round at 345 g, for homesites with nails, rocks and tight spots; the 11 inch (28 cm) round, the general-purpose size; the 13 x 11 inch (34 x 28 cm) for more coverage on open fields and wide beaches; and the 9.5 x 5 inch HF2 elliptical at 350 g, which runs 21 multi-frequency settings from 9 to 90 kHz or single frequencies up to 120 kHz, with about 10 hours of battery. All four are waterproof to 20 m (66 ft). Our DEUS II coil pairing guide walks through setup.

For audio we stock the WS6 ST, the compact WSA ST at 72 g, the over-ear WSA-XL ST and the BH-01 bone conduction headset for diving. The XP MI-6 pinpointer pairs with the DEUS II's wireless link; see our XP pinpointers.

Is the XP DEUS II good for relic hunting?

Yes, the XP DEUS II is good for relic hunting, and in our experience it is one of its strongest uses. On an old farmhouse site full of nails, adjustable Reactivity, iron volume, discrimination and several audio configurations give you different ways to approach a brass button lying a few inches from a nail. It cannot reliably see through every nail, and iron masking is still a limitation. Compare other relic metal detectors.

Can the XP DEUS II be used underwater for dive detecting?

Yes, the XP DEUS II can be used underwater for dive detecting with the right setup. XP rates the coils and the RC remote with its red diving cap to 20 meters (66 feet), and the BH-01 bone conduction headset, which plugs into the remote, to 20 meters as well; the aerial antenna is needed when the coil is submerged. The WS6 ST and WSA ST are rainproof only and the WSA-XL ST is rated to 1 meter, so a WS6 ST Master is not a dive setup. Our Which XP DEUS II to Buy guide covers it.

Is the XP DEUS II difficult to learn?

The XP DEUS II is not difficult to start with, but it takes time to master. Its factory programs work without changing a thing; the learning curve comes from how much you can adjust, and new owners often change too much too soon. We would pick one factory program, learn its tones in your own ground over a few hunts, then change one setting at a time, and not copy settings from videos of very different sites. See our XP metal detector guide.

Which XP DEUS II setup should I buy?

Which XP DEUS II setup to buy depends on whether it goes in the water and how you like to run a detector. For dry land and dry sand, the WS6 ST Master is XP's lightest DEUS II, with the controls on the headphones. If you wade, dive or want the settings on a separate screen, start with the RC, and pair the headphones you prefer or choose an RC package that includes them. Our Which XP DEUS II to Buy guide walks through the choice in three questions.

Can the XP DEUS II remote run the XTREM Hunter coil set?

Yes, the XP DEUS II remote can run the XTREM Hunter coil set. XP pairs the XTREM Hunter with the DEUS II remote as a new coil, and the remote needs software version 2.0 or higher; once paired, the remote shows the XTREM Hunter's own menus, and you switch back to a standard DEUS II coil in the same menu. The XTREM Hunter is a two-box system for large, deep objects, with XP giving up to 5 meters (17 feet) on large targets, so it is not a coin or jewelry tool. We stock the XP XTREM Hunter coil set for the DEUS II remote; see the XP XTREM Hunter collection.
