Minelab Manticore Metal Detector

The Minelab Manticore is the flagship of the consumer lineup, built around Multi-IQ+ and a 2D target ID display that plots ferrous and conductive axes simultaneously. At iron-heavy relic sites where a single-number ID can't separate silver from iron, the 2D display gives you more reliable dig decisions than any other machine in this class. Waterproof to 16 feet. Every Manticore metal detector for sale here ships new from an authorized US dealer.

What Is the Minelab Manticore?

The Minelab Manticore is the company's flagship simultaneous multi-frequency detector, designed for hunters who need more discrimination power in iron-heavy sites and difficult ground conditions. It sits above the Equinox 900 in Minelab's lineup, offering a 2D target identification display that shows ferrous and conductivity data on separate axes. This gives you a clearer picture of what's in the hole before you dig. The Manticore runs on Minelab's Multi-IQ+ technology, transmitting and receiving across multiple frequencies at once for better target separation and depth on large silver and copper targets. It's built for relic hunters, park hunters, and beach detectorists who've outgrown single-tone machines and want granular control over target response.

Minelab Manticore Key Features

The 2D target ID screen is the headline feature. Instead of a single VDI number, you see a scatter plot that separates iron falsing from legitimate targets in trashy ground. Ferrous response runs vertically, conductivity horizontally. A rusty nail reads high ferrous, low conductivity. A silver dime reads low ferrous, high conductivity. This matters when you're hunting a cellar hole where every signal is wrapped in iron.

The Manticore ships with eight detection modes, each tuned for specific target types and ground conditions. General mode covers most hunting scenarios. High Conductor prioritizes silver and copper. Goldfield mode is optimized for small gold jewelry at the beach or in parks. Each mode adjusts recovery speed, tone breaks, and target acceptance windows without forcing you into manual tweaks.

Audio response is fully customizable. You can assign pitch, volume, and tone breaks to specific conductivity ranges, then save those profiles. The machine also supports Bluetooth aptX Low Latency for wireless headphones with no audio lag, critical when you're listening for faint whispers under iron.

Minelab Manticore Price & What's Included

The Manticore price is set by MAP (minimum advertised price) across all authorized dealers in the US. You won't find legitimate discounts below MAP from any authorized source. Current Manticore pricing and bundle options appear on the product listings above. What ships in the box: the Manticore control unit, an 11-inch double-D waterproof coil, ML105 wireless headphones with aptX Low Latency, a USB-C charging cable, and a quick-start guide. The detector is fully submersible to 16 feet, including the control pod.

We stock Minelab Manticore bundles that pair the detector with a pinpointer, digging tool, and finds pouch. These bundles save you the step of sourcing accessories separately and get you in the field faster. All Manticore units sold through Serious Detecting come with the full three-year Minelab warranty and free shipping on orders over $99.

Minelab Manticore Compatible Coils & Accessories

The Manticore uses the same coil connector as the Equinox 700 and 900, so any coil compatible with those machines will work here. Minelab offers four stock coil sizes: the 8-inch round M8 for tight spaces and trashy sites, the 9×7-inch elliptical M9 for better ground coverage in moderate trash, the 11-inch M11 that ships with the detector, and the 15-inch M15 for open fields and depth on large targets.

Coiltek manufactures aftermarket coils that extend the Manticore's capabilities further. Their 10×5-inch elliptical coil excels in iron-heavy sites where target separation is critical. The 14-inch round coil adds depth without the bulk of the 15-inch stock coil. For a detailed breakdown of coil performance and use cases, see our Minelab Manticore coils guide.

The Minelab detector backpack is purpose-built to carry the Manticore, spare coils, and accessories without rattling or shifting during transport. It includes padded compartments for the control unit and coils, plus external pockets for finds and tools.

Minelab Manticore vs. Equinox 900: Which Should You Buy?

The Manticore wins on discrimination power, beach performance in heavy salt, and depth on large targets like seated silver and coppers. The 2D target ID screen gives you more information per target than the Equinox 900's single-axis VDI. The Manticore also handles wet saltwater sand better, with less falsing on black sand and shell hash.

The Equinox 900 wins on price, weight, and simplicity. It's nearly a pound lighter, easier to learn, and costs significantly less. For hunters who don't need the 2D display and are comfortable making dig decisions based on VDI and tone, the 900 delivers most of the Manticore's depth and multi-frequency performance at a lower entry point.

If you're hunting iron-infested sites regularly or you need every edge in saltwater, the Manticore justifies the price difference. If you're covering open parks and farm fields where trash density is moderate, the Equinox 900 will serve you well.

How does the Manticore handle electromagnetic interference (EMI)?

The Minelab Manticore handles electromagnetic interference (EMI) well, keeping chatter from power lines, radio and cell towers and nearby detectors down, so you can often run higher sensitivity in electrically noisy places like urban parks.

If you do hear chatter, run the Noise Cancel function first, then lower sensitivity only if you need to. Switching to a single frequency (5, 10, 15, 20 or 40 kHz) can also help at very noisy sites.

What makes the Minelab Manticore different from other metal detectors?

The Minelab Manticore differs from other metal detectors in its Multi-IQ+ simultaneous multi-frequency, which has more transmit power than the Equinox series, and its 2D target ID, which shows IDs from 0 to 99 alongside a ferrous reading so you can separate good targets from iron.

It is also fully waterproof to 5 m (16 ft), weighs 1.3 kg (2.9 lb) and includes ML 105 wireless headphones. For a lighter all-rounder at a lower price, look at the Minelab Equinox 900.

Answered by Richard T. · November 2025

How deep can the Minelab Manticore detect?

How deep the Minelab Manticore can detect depends on soil conditions, target size and the coil you use, but it has more transmit power than the Equinox series, so it gets good depth and keeps Target IDs stable on deeper coins and relics. A 5-level depth indicator on the full color display shows roughly how deep each target is.

Coil choice changes depth the most. The stock M11 11" Double-D is the all-round choice, the M15 adds depth in open ground, and the M8 and M9 trade some depth for separation in trash. Learn more in our Metal Detector Coil Guide, and see How Deep Do Metal Detectors Go for everything that affects depth.

Is the Manticore waterproof?

Yes, the Minelab Manticore is waterproof to 5 m (16 ft) with an IP68 rating, including the control box and coil. It is built for wet sand, shallow water, surf, wading and snorkeling.

Its Beach, Deep and Surf & Seawater modes are designed for salt water and waves. For underwater use, keep the seals clean and use waterproof headphones, since the included ML 105 wireless headphones work above the water. See our waterproof metal detectors.

Is the Minelab Manticore good for beach detecting?

Yes, the Minelab Manticore is good for beach detecting. It is waterproof to 5 m (16 ft, IP68), and its Multi-IQ+ multi-frequency is stable in wet salt sand, with dedicated Beach, Deep and Surf & Seawater modes for the beach.

That said, the Manticore's biggest advantage, the 2D target ID, is most valuable on iron-heavy relic sites. On beaches, salt stability and depth matter more than iron separation, so for dedicated beach hunters the Minelab Equinox 900 is often the better value. The Manticore is very capable on a beach, but you may be paying for features you won't fully use there. Shop all beach metal detectors.

What sites is the Minelab Manticore best suited for?

The Minelab Manticore is best suited for iron-heavy relic sites where discrimination decides what you find: Civil War grounds, colonial homesteads, old farmsteads with dense iron trash and competition relic hunts. On these sites, its 2D target ID shows ferrous and non-ferrous information together, which gives experienced hunters a real edge in pulling good targets from iron.

For parks, beaches and sites with less iron, the Manticore is capable, but the Minelab Equinox 900 delivers similar results at lower cost. See our Best Metal Detectors for Relic Hunting guide for more.

What accessories should I buy with my Minelab Manticore?

The accessories to buy with your Minelab Manticore are a pinpointer like the Minelab Pro-Find series, a good digger from our shovels, diggers and picks collection and a finds pouch. The ML 105 wireless headphones are already in the box.

Consider extra search coils: the smaller M8 or M9 works well in trashy areas, while the M15 covers more ground. A carry bag protects the detector in transport, and a USB power bank keeps the built-in battery topped up on long hunts. Contact us if you'd like recommendations based on where you'll be detecting.

Answered by John W. · March 2026

What types of targets can the Minelab Manticore detect?

The Minelab Manticore can detect coins, jewelry, relics and small gold nuggets. Its 2D target ID helps you judge what a target is before you dig, even in trashy or mineralized ground.

For nuggets, the Goldfield mode helps, but a dedicated gold detector is the better tool for serious prospecting.

Answered by Dan P. · March 2026

What coils are compatible with the Minelab Manticore?

The Minelab Manticore is compatible with Minelab's M-series coils made for it: the standard M11 11" Double-D round coil that comes in the box, plus the M8, M9 and M15 options. Coils from the Equinox and X-TERRA series do not fit the Manticore.

Pick a smaller coil for trashy parks and tight relic sites, and the M15 for more coverage and depth in open ground. Shop Manticore coils in our search coils collection, and see our Metal Detector Coil Guide for help choosing.

Answered by Dan P. · March 2026

Does the Minelab Manticore work well for gold prospecting?

The Minelab Manticore works for gold prospecting in its Goldfield mode and will find gold jewelry and small nuggets in moderate ground, but it is not a dedicated gold machine.

For serious nugget hunting in mineralized goldfields, a purpose-built detector like the Minelab Gold Monster 1000 or Minelab GPX 6000 will find more. Browse all gold detectors.

Answered by Dan P. · March 2026

Is the Minelab Manticore good for beginners?

The Minelab Manticore is not the best choice for most beginners. It is designed for experienced users, and its many settings can overwhelm someone just starting out.

New detectorists usually do better with a simpler machine like the Minelab Vanquish 360 or Minelab Equinox 700, then move up to the Manticore later. See our Best Metal Detector for Beginners guide.

Answered by Richard T. · March 2026

What's the difference between Multi-IQ and Multi-IQ+ technology?

The difference between Multi-IQ and Multi-IQ+ is transmit power: Multi-IQ+ in the Minelab Manticore runs more transmit power than the Multi-IQ in the Equinox series, which helps depth and keeps target IDs stable in difficult ground.

Both are simultaneous multi-frequency systems, and both let you choose single frequencies too. The Manticore offers 5, 10, 15, 20 and 40 kHz. Multi-IQ runs in detectors like the Minelab Equinox 900 and Minelab Vanquish 360.

Answered by Dan P. · March 2026

Can I use my old Minelab headphones with the Manticore?

Whether you can use your old Minelab headphones with the Minelab Manticore depends on how they connect. The Manticore ships with ML 105 wireless headphones, plus an audio cable and hard case, so most owners don't need another pair.

If you want a spare or waterproof set, send us your current headphone model and we'll confirm compatibility, or browse compatible options in our metal detector headphones collection.

Answered by Dan P. · November 2025

How does the Manticore handle bottle caps?

The Minelab Manticore handles bottle caps through its 2D target ID. Their mixed ferrous and conductive signal usually plots toward the ferrous side of the display, even when the 0 to 99 number looks like a good target.

Adjusting the ferrous limits lets you mark those readings as iron so you dig fewer caps. Our metal detecting tips cover more ways to deal with trash.
