Relic & Treasure Metal Detectors

Relic hunting rewards a detector that can pull a deep, faint signal out of iron-littered ground and tell you whether it is worth digging. The machines in this collection are picked for exactly that: sharp target ID and discrimination for lifting silver and copper out of junk, ground balance that handles the iron-heavy soil around old home sites and battlefields, and the depth to reach what shallow machines pass over. We are an authorized dealer for every brand here, and most orders over $99 ship free in the lower 48.

What Makes a Good Treasure & Relic Detector

Treasure and relic sites are usually old, and old ground is dirty ground, nails, foil, shotgun shells, and mineralization that hides good targets. The detectors that win on these sites share a few traits: precise target ID and adjustable discrimination so you can separate a silver coin from a square nail, fast recovery speed to pick a faint signal out of a cluster of junk, ground-balance control for mineralized and iron-heavy soil, and the raw depth to reach targets that have been sinking for a century. Multi-frequency (SMF) machines handle this range best, which is why most of the strongest treasure-hunting equipment in this collection runs simultaneous multi-frequency. New to the hobby and not sure where to start? Our beginner & intermediate detectors are a gentler on-ramp.

Best Metal Detectors for Treasure Hunting, by Experience Level

The best metal detector for treasure hunting is the one that matches your ground and your experience, not just the one with the biggest spec sheet. For a first serious machine, the Minelab Vanquish 540 and the Vanquish 340 bundle deliver multi-frequency performance at an entry price. Stepping up, the Minelab X-TERRA PRO and the waterproof X-TERRA ELITE add switchable frequencies and submersible builds for mixed land-and-water hunting. At the top, the Minelab Manticore, the wireless XP Deus II, and the Minelab CTX 3030 give serious treasure hunters the depth, separation, and target ID to clear a hunted-out site that gives up nothing to a lesser machine.

Relic Hunting: Detectors Built for Iron-Heavy, Mineralized Ground

Relic hunting is its own discipline. Battlefields, old farmsteads, and colonial home sites are saturated with iron, and the relics worth finding, buckles, buttons, plates, tools, often read close to that iron. A good relic detector gives you iron audio and fine discrimination so you can hear a non-ferrous target hiding next to a nail, fast recovery to separate masked targets, and the option of a larger DD coil for ground coverage and depth. The same multi-frequency machines above handle relic work well, the X-TERRA PRO, Manticore, and Deus II in particular, because their separation and ID let you dig the good iron-adjacent signals and leave the trash. If your hunting leans toward saltwater beaches and old shipwreck coastline, the pulse-induction Fisher CZ-21 ignores salt and reaches deep targets that VLF machines lose in the surf.

Coins, Caches & Deep Targets

Whether you're after a pocket-spill of silver under an old oak or a buried cache, depth and target ID are what separate a productive day from a sore back. The Manticore and CTX 3030 are the depth leaders here, with GPS mapping on the CTX for re-gridding a promising field, while the Deus II's wireless coil and FMF flexibility make it a tireless all-day coin-and-relic machine. Pair any of them with a good pinpointer and digging tools, see our shovels, diggers & picks, to recover targets cleanly without damaging the find. Not sure which machine fits your sites? Our relic hunting detector guide compares the field, and where to go metal detecting helps you find the ground itself.

Treasure Hunting Gear Beyond the Detector

A detector is the start of a treasure-hunting kit, not the whole of it. A pinpointer to zero in on the target in the hole, a sturdy digger or sand scoop, a finds pouch to keep recoveries and trash separated, and a carry bag to protect the machine all earn their place fast. Round out your setup from our pinpointers, diggers, and carry bags & pouches.

Why Buy Your Treasure & Relic Detector from Serious Detecting

We're an authorized dealer for every detector in this collection, so you get a genuine machine with the full manufacturer warranty, not gray-market stock. These are the detectors our own staff hunts with, and our recommendations come from time in the field, not just spec sheets. Orders over $99 ship free in the lower 48, local pickup is available out of Michigan, and over 2,700 verified buyers have rated us 4.9 stars. Not sure which detector fits your sites? Tell us where and what you hunt, relics, coins, the beach, and we'll match the machine to the ground.

What is the best metal detector for relic hunting?

The best metal detector for relic hunting separates good targets from the iron that covers most old sites, with fast recovery and clear iron audio. Our top picks:

Minelab Manticore: the strongest on dense iron sites, with 2D target ID that shows what's under the coil.

XP Deus II: fast, fully wireless and light enough to swing all day.

Nokta Legend 2 and Minelab Equinox 900: capable relic machines that are also fully waterproof for creeks and beaches.

Garrett ACE Apex: an affordable multi-frequency option for newer relic hunters.

What metal detector is best for finding Civil War relics?

Civil War sites present classic relic hunting challenges: dense iron contamination from camp debris, hardware, and equipment, with good targets often in the middle of that iron. Machines with fast recovery speed and strong iron discrimination are essential. The XP DEUS II and Minelab Manticore are the machines experienced Civil War relic hunters rely on at competitive sites. The Nokta Legend and Minelab Equinox 800 handle moderately contaminated sites well at lower cost. Recovery speed and discrimination capability are the deciding factors - more so than raw depth on most Civil War ground.

What depth do metal detectors reach for relics?

Real-world depth depends on target size, soil conditions, and ground mineralization more than the detector itself. A large iron cannonball may read at 18+ inches in favorable soil; a small coin in heavy mineralization may only read at 6-8 inches with the same machine. Machines like the XP DEUS II and Minelab Manticore reach meaningful depth on good targets in variable conditions. Claims of specific depth numbers from manufacturers are under ideal conditions - field performance varies significantly. Soil research, site selection, and developing audio reading skills often matter more than machine choice.

Is a pinpointer useful for relic hunting?

Essential. On relic sites where you are digging in iron-contaminated soil, a pinpointer tells you exactly where in the excavation the target is, preventing you from cutting through it with the digging tool and helping you recover it intact. This matters particularly for fragile relics - buttons, buckles, insignia - that can be damaged by a shovel. A quality pinpointer cuts recovery time and improves recovery quality. The Garrett Pro-Pointer AT at 10-foot waterproofing is the most popular choice, suitable for field use in all weather conditions.
