Underwater & Waterproof Metal Detectors

An underwater metal detector lets you hunt where the finds collect and most detectorists cannot follow: wet sand, surf, rivers, lake beds, and on commercial dive machines down to 200 feet. Every waterproof detector here is sealed to a real manufacturer depth rating, so match the machine to how deep you actually hunt. One thing worth knowing before you compare specs: almost nothing is made between 16 and 65 feet. Recreational machines top out near 16 feet and true dive units start near 65, so most buyers are really choosing between a submersible machine and a dive machine.

How to Choose a Waterproof Metal Detector

The first spec that matters is the rating. A “waterproof” machine sealed to 3 feet handles rain and wading; a true underwater detector submerges and stays sealed at diving depth. Match the machine to the deepest water you’ll actually work, too little protection and you flood it, too much and you pay for depth you’ll never use. For ranked picks by depth and budget, see our best underwater metal detectors guide.

What Makes a Metal Detector Waterproof?

A waterproof metal detector seals its electronics, control box, coil, shaft connections, against water intrusion up to a stated depth, where the pressure exceeds what the seals can hold. That rating is the whole story: a “waterproof” machine rated to 3 feet handles rain and wading but is not an underwater machine, while a true underwater detector fully submerges and stays sealed at diving depth. “Weatherproof” or “rainproof” machines are a step below, splash-resistant only, never for submersion. Always buy to the deepest water you’ll actually work, and treat the rating as a hard limit, not a suggestion. For more information visit our waterproof detector guide.

Choosing by Depth

Depth rating is the cleanest way to choose, because it maps directly to how you hunt. A machine sealed to 3 feet handles rain, wet sand and wading — all most water’s-edge hunters ever need. The fully submersible class, rated 10 to 16 feet, covers surf, snorkeling and swim zones, and is where most serious water hunters settle. Every detector on this page states its manufacturer depth rating, so buy to the deepest water you’ll actually work. Diving with a tank? Underwater & Waterproof Gold Detectors

Gold concentrates in water too, in the bedrock crevices of gold-bearing rivers and the black sand of placer streams. A waterproof gold detector lets you submerge the coil to work underwater crevices and wet bedrock that hold the heaviest gold. High-frequency and pulse-induction machines both come in submersible versions; which you want depends on your ground. For the full nugget-hunting lineup, see the gold detector collection, and for the technology breakdown, our pulse induction and VLF collections.

Why Buy a Waterproof Detector from Serious Detecting

A depth rating is only worth what stands behind it, so buy from a dealer the manufacturer actually backs. Serious Detecting is an authorized US dealer for Minelab, Nokta, Garrett, XP, Fisher, and Quest, genuine machines with valid waterproof warranties, not gray-market units with no recourse when a seal fails. Orders over $99 ship free out of Michigan, local pickup is open, and the staff hunts water on both coasts and the Great Lakes. Tell us how deep you hunt and we’ll point you to the right tier before you trust your electronics to the bottom.

What is the best waterproof metal detector?

The best waterproof metal detector depends on how deep you plan to take it. Most people need a machine that handles beach surf, creeks and rain, while divers need a pressure-rated detector.

Wading, rivers and surf: the Minelab Equinox 900 is our top pick, with the Nokta Legend 2 and Minelab X-Terra Elite as strong alternatives.

On a budget: the Nokta Simplex Ultra and Minelab Vanquish 460 are fully waterproof entry machines.

Snorkeling and shallow diving: the XP Deus II, waterproof to 65 feet.

Scuba: see the pressure-rated models in our waterproof metal detectors collection.

Check that the whole machine is rated, not just the coil. Shop all waterproof metal detectors or read our Best Underwater Metal Detectors guide.

What is the best underwater metal detector?

The best underwater metal detector is one rated for the depth you'll actually dive, because a detector built for wading can flood if you take it deeper. Pick by depth:

Surf and wading, to 16 feet: the Minelab Equinox 900 or Minelab Manticore.

Snorkeling and shallow dives, to 65 feet: the XP Deus II, used with wired waterproof headphones.

Scuba, beyond 65 feet: pressure-rated detectors like the Minelab Excalibur II (200 feet) and Fisher CZ-21, found in our waterproof metal detectors collection.

Our Best Underwater Metal Detectors guide compares every model by depth rating.

Can I use a waterproof metal detector in saltwater?

A waterproof metal detector handles the physical water - it will not be damaged by saltwater submersion within its depth rating. Performance in saltwater, however, also depends on the detection technology: single-frequency VLF machines generate constant false signals in wet salt sand and surf zones due to salt conductivity. For beach and saltwater use, you need both full waterproofing and simultaneous multi-frequency technology. A fully waterproof single-frequency machine will survive saltwater but will not detect effectively in it. See beach metal detectors for machines that handle both.

How deep can waterproof metal detectors go?

How deep a waterproof metal detector can go depends on its rating, and that rating has to cover the whole machine, not just the coil. Many detectors have a waterproof coil but a control box that can't be submerged. The common depth tiers:

10 feet: surf wading, creeks and heavy rain, like the Garrett AT Max.

16 feet: deeper wading and some snorkeling, like the Minelab Equinox 900, Minelab Manticore and Minelab X-Terra Elite.

65 feet: snorkeling and shallow diving, like the XP Deus II.

200 feet and beyond: scuba diving with pressure-rated models from our waterproof metal detectors collection.

A rating is the maximum safe depth, so leave some margin and keep the seals clean. For picks at each depth, see our Best Underwater Metal Detectors guide.

Is 10 feet of waterproofing enough for beach detecting?

For the vast majority of beach detecting including surf zone wading - yes. Wave action in surf zones rarely submits a machine beyond 6-8 feet even in breaking waves. River hunting at typical wading depths is well within 10 feet. A 10-foot waterproof rating covers every practical beach and river hunting scenario short of actual snorkeling or scuba work. If you plan to dive detect, you need a machine rated to 65 feet or more. See dive-rated detectors.

Can I use the Garrett AT Pro in the surf zone?

Yes - the Garrett AT Pro is fully waterproof to 10 feet and handles surf zone wading effectively. The single-frequency VLF technology shows more salt-response noise in wet salt sand than simultaneous multi-frequency machines like the Minelab Equinox 800, but many experienced beach hunters use the AT Pro productively in the surf zone. For the most demanding salt beach conditions and competition beach hunting, a multi-frequency machine is a step up. For general beach wading and river hunting, the AT Pro is a proven and capable choice. See Garrett AT series.

Do all machines with waterproof coils have waterproof control boxes?

No - this is an important distinction. Many machines have waterproof coils with non-submersible control boxes. The Garrett ACE series is an example: waterproof coils that handle rain and splashing, but the control box cannot be submerged. Full submersion waterproofing - where both the coil and control box are rated for underwater use - is a specific feature that machines in this collection all have. Always verify the full machine waterproof rating rather than assuming a waterproof coil means a fully waterproof machine. See all waterproof detectors.
