Our XP ICONX (also written ICON X) Adventure Pack puts the ICONX with XP WSA-XL ST wireless stereo headphones, an XP MI-6 pinpointer, an XP Backpack 240 and an XP Finds Pouch in one bundle. The ICONX suits intermediate detectorists and experienced users who want XP's FMF technology with a relatively straightforward interface. The MI-6 links wirelessly with the ICONX remote, and the backpack's waist belt takes the finds pouch. The ICONX runs FMF or a single 4, 14 or 28 kHz frequency on the 11 inch FMF coil, with 7 Reactivity levels and 0.5 point discrimination steps.

What the add-ons in this XP ICONX bundle do
XP WSA-XL ST wireless stereo headphones: full-size wireless headphones that XP's ICON manual lists for the ICONX, connected to the remote over XP's own wireless link. XP gives them a weight of 250 g, a 4-band equalizer and a USB-C charge of about 2 hours, and covers them for 5 years, with 2 years on the lithium battery. See our metal detector headphones.
XP MI-6 pinpointer: XP's handheld pinpointer, which links wirelessly with the ICONX remote. XP says you hear the pinpointer's signals in your headset. XP lists a 12 kHz frequency, PULSE or PITCH audio, a rechargeable lithium polymer battery and a weight of 170 g, rates it water resistant to 6 meters (about 20 feet), and covers it for 2 years. Its holster, strap and charging cable come with it. See our XP pinpointers.
XP Backpack 240: XP built it to carry a full detector with its headphones, a pinpointer in its holster, a second coil, a mattock, a bottle and snacks. Outside are pockets for coils and lower stems, a mesh pocket, a pinpointer pocket, a side bottle pocket, a headphone pocket and a light rain-resistant map pocket; inside are a coil pocket and a pocket for keys or the remote. XP lists a 31 L capacity, a weight of 700 g, a 65 cm (25.5 inches) back length, polyester with a 600D bottom and polyurethane foam in the handles and back panel, an adjustable chest strap with an emergency whistle and a waist belt that takes the XP Finds Pouch. The backpack is green and black, with a 2-year XP warranty. The ICONX's telescopic stem folds to 58 cm, which makes the detector convenient to carry. See our XP carry bags, backpacks and cases.
XP Finds Pouch: a large directly accessible pocket and a smaller zipped pocket, worn on your belt with the adjustable strap provided or fixed to the XP backpack with its 2 MOLLE fasteners. XP describes it as fully washable, with a water drainage system for underwater or wet weather use.
About the XP ICONX
What we like about the XP ICONX is that it adds meaningful control to the ICON platform without requiring a move all the way to the DEUS II: more factory programs, greater Reactivity adjustment, more frequency flexibility and finer discrimination adjustment, in the same light, wireless design. It suits intermediate detectorists and experienced users who want XP's FMF technology with a relatively straightforward interface.
Like the ICON, the ICONX uses XP's simultaneous FMF multi-frequency technology, processing several frequencies at the same time. Picture an old park where coins are mixed with rusty nails and aluminum trash: we would begin with a factory program, then experiment with Reactivity and audio settings to understand complicated signals. FMF does not guarantee accurate identification of every target, because ground, target size, orientation and nearby metal all affect the response.
XP ICONX programs and key settings
- Programs: 6 factory programs (Field, Trashy Field, Forest, Park, Wet Beach and Beach & Surf) and 6 user programs, twice the ICON's number.
- Single frequencies, 4, 14 and 28 kHz: the ICON offers 4 and 14 kHz, so the 28 kHz setting is part of the ICONX's extra frequency flexibility.
- Reactivity, 7 levels (0 to 6): the ICON has 5 levels (1 to 5), so the ICONX adds adjustment at both ends. Reactivity is one of the settings we would learn first, along with ground balance, discrimination and audio configuration.
- Discrimination and iron: a 28-segment multi-notch with audio and visual rejection, 0.5 point resolution in the ferrous zone (the ICON uses 1 point steps), bottle-cap rejection, an automatic silencer, an all-metal mode and 11 iron volume levels.
- Audio: PWM and SQUARE audio with stereo morphing, 6 audio settings including XP's enhanced audio curve, Pitch, 2, 3 and 5 tones or Full Tones. No audio setting identifies coins, jewelry or relics by itself; we would begin with a factory program before changing audio configuration.
- Ground balance and sensitivity: Grab, Manual or Tracking ground balance and 25 sensitivity levels.
Where the XP ICONX works well, and where it does not
Old parks, where coins lie among rusty nails and aluminum trash, are where the extra controls earn their place, though the ICONX cannot reliably find every good object hidden among iron. See more relic and treasure metal detectors. Target ID is useful but not a guarantee. Near the surf the ICONX is designed to support detecting in conductive salt sand, though saltwater and mineralized black sand can still affect stability. See our beach metal detectors.
Wading and underwater use with the XP ICONX
XP rates the ICONX remote to 1.5 meters (5 feet) for a maximum of 30 minutes with its original cap. For use deeper than that, XP requires its BH-02 bone conduction headphones with their waterproof connector, and with them XP rates the system IP68 to 5 meters (16 feet). XP's coil page rates the 11 inch FMF coil waterproof to 16 feet (5 meters), and XP's manual recommends avoiding heavy rain and extreme weather. XP rates the WSA-XL ST headphones rainproof, IP68 compliant to 1 meter deep, and not designed for diving, so we would keep them above the water line too. The MI-6 pinpointer is water resistant to 6 meters. Wireless headphones should never be assumed suitable for underwater use. See our waterproof metal detectors.
XP ICONX wireless design, weight and battery
The remote, the coil and XP's wireless headphones talk over XP's own digital protocol in the 2.40 to 2.48 GHz band, with 36 automatic channels and a latency XP gives as about 4 ms, so there is no coil cable on the stem. The blue S-Telescopic Lite stem with a carbon middle part weighs about 260 g against about 285 g for the ICON's stem, and folds to 58 cm (22.8 inches) and extends to 130 cm (51.2 inches). XP gives the ICONX's weight as about 710 g (1.57 lb) without the remote on the stem and about 830 g (1.83 lb) with it; the lighter stem helps comfort, not detection depth. The remote (365 mAh) and the coil (700 mAh) each carry a rechargeable lithium polymer battery, and XP gives about 11 hours for the remote, the headphones and the coil and about 3 hours to charge, with an operating range of 0 to 40 °C (32 to 104 °F). The sunlight-readable LCD has an adjustable, low-consumption backlight, and XP's Go Terrain app records finds and tracks routes with your phone's GPS. XP makes the ICONX in France, and it carries the Longtime label.
One mistake to avoid with the XP ICONX
The mistake we warn about is assuming the ICONX is identical to the ICON except for its name. Its additional controls are meaningful for experienced users: 6 factory programs instead of 3, 7 Reactivity levels instead of 5, a 28 kHz single frequency and 0.5 point ferrous resolution.
XP ICONX or XP ICON
The standard ICON shares the ICONX's FMF technology, wireless design and 25 sensitivity levels, with 3 factory programs, 5 Reactivity levels and 4 and 14 kHz single frequencies. If you only need straightforward recreational detecting, it may be sufficient. See the XP ICON collection.
