XP DEUS Metal Detector (DEUS 1)

The original XP DEUS (DEUS 1) is a fully wireless single-frequency metal detector: one selectable frequency at a time, 35 frequencies from 3.7 to 27.7 kHz with an X35 coil, 10 factory programs and a weight from about 750 g (1.65 lb) with headphones only. XP still builds it in packs with the remote, WS4 or WS5 headphones and a 9 inch or 11 inch X35 coil. It suits inland coin and relic hunters who want a light wireless detector with detailed control. The DEUS II adds FMF multi-frequency and coils waterproof to 20 m. Our collection for the original XP DEUS has the DEUS packages plus X35, HF and standard coils, headphones and parts.

XP DEUS Metal Detector Overview

The XP DEUS is a VLF detector that runs one frequency at a time. With an X35 coil it offers 35 frequencies from 3.7 to 27.7 kHz, and XP's HF coils go higher: 21 frequencies from 13 to 59 kHz on the 9 inch round, and 3 base frequencies from 15 to 80 kHz on the 9.5 x 5 inch elliptical. It has 10 factory programs and room for 8 of your own, ground effect settings for tracking, pumping, manual and beach, and a motion mode plus four non-motion pinpoint modes. The coil, remote and headphones talk over XP's digital radio link, and the WS4 or WS5 headphones can run the detector without the remote. In hand it weighs from about 750 g (1.65 lb) with WS4 or WS5 headphones only, and 975 g (2.15 lb) with the remote. XP rates the X35 and HF coils waterproof to 6 m (20 ft) and calls the WS4 and WS5 headphones rainproof; the remote is not waterproof. Battery life is about 15 hours for the coil, 19 hours for the remote and 22 hours for the headphones, and all three charge in about 3 hours over USB. XP covers the DEUS for 5 years, with 2 years on the lithium batteries, and makes it in France.

XP DEUS vs DEUS II: Which Should You Buy?

Choose by where you hunt. The DEUS II runs FMF simultaneous multi-frequency or 49 single frequencies, its FMF coils and its RC remote (with the red cap) are rated to 20 m (66 ft), and it has Beach and Beach Sens programs for wet salt sand. The original DEUS runs one frequency at a time, its coils are waterproof to 6 m (20 ft), and its remote and headphones stay out of the water. On inland fields, parks and old homesites, the DEUS gives you a light wireless detector with detailed control over Reactivity, frequency, discrimination and ground balance.

We recommend the original DEUS for inland coin and relic hunters who enjoy choosing a frequency for the site. For saltwater beaches, wading, diving or multi-frequency, we recommend the DEUS II. If you already own an original DEUS or an XP ORX and want DEUS II features on the stem you have, XP's DEUS and ORX Conversion Pack adds a DEUS II FMF coil with its own lower stem and WS6 headphones with the WS6 Master control module.

Original XP DEUS, Best For:

  • Farm fields, parks and old homesites, where light weight helps on long sessions
  • Detectorists who like to pick one frequency for the target and the site
  • Hunters who want a headphone-only setup, with the WS4 or WS5 running the detector

XP DEUS II, Best For:

  • Wet saltwater beaches, with the Beach and Beach Sens programs
  • Wading and diving, with coils and the red-capped RC rated to 20 m (66 ft)
  • Hunters who want simultaneous multi-frequency on mixed or changing ground

Remote, WS4 or WS5: Choosing a DEUS Pack

XP builds the DEUS in packs around three control options. The remote control, at 100 g, shows every setting and the Target ID on its own screen and rides on the stem or on your belt. The WS4 is a light backphone headset, 86 g, with a removable control module that runs the detector on its own. The WS5 is a full-cup headset that fits over the ears to cut outside noise, with its controls built in. We carry packs with the remote and WS4, the remote and WS5, the WS4 only and the WS5 only, on the 9 inch or 11 inch X35 coil. A pack with the remote gives you two ways to change settings; a headphone-only pack is the lighter setup.

Key Features That Matter in the Field

Reactivity is one of the most useful DEUS settings. Near a nail, a higher setting helps the detector separate closely spaced targets; in a clean field, a lower one may keep stronger responses from some deeper targets. Frequency is the other. On a clean field where you hope for larger coins, a lower frequency is worth trying; on a homesite with small brass buttons and other low-conductivity targets, try a higher one. No single frequency finds more in every situation, because target size, conductivity, ground and coil all play a part. The expert menu adds the sound curve, Iron Volume, multi-tone audio and notch. We recommend starting from a factory program and changing one setting at a time, so you know which change made the difference.

Where the XP DEUS Works Best and Its Limits

The DEUS is at its best on inland ground: farm fields, old homesites, parks and historical sites. XP includes a beach ground setting, but we would not choose the original DEUS as a dedicated wet saltwater beach detector, because conductive wet salt sand is difficult ground for a detector that runs one frequency at a time. The DEUS II's Beach programs suit that ground better. The X35 and HF coils can go into water to 6 m (20 ft), but the remote and headphones must stay dry, so the DEUS is not a dive detector. The coil, remote and headphones each carry their own battery, so check all three before a trip.

Coils and Accessories That Fit the XP DEUS

XP lists its X35 and HF coils for both the DEUS and the ORX. In this collection: the 9 inch X35 at 370 g, the 11 inch X35 and the 13 x 11 inch X35 at 590 g, each with 35 frequencies from 3.7 to 27.7 kHz and about 15 hours of battery; the 9 inch round HF at 350 g, with about 20 hours; and the 9.5 x 5 inch elliptical HF at 330 g, with 13 to 20 hours. XP rates the X35 and HF coils waterproof to 6 m (20 ft). We also carry the standard 9 inch and 11 inch DEUS coils. XP does not list the FMF coils for the original DEUS.

For audio, we stock the WS4 and WS5 headphones, WS4 and WS5 replacement pads, the backphone headband and XP's waterproof earphones. The XP MI-6 pinpointer connects to the DEUS so its signal comes through your headphones; see our XP pinpointers. Our XP DEUS coil pairing guide covers remote and headphone setup.

Does XP still make the original XP DEUS?

Yes, XP still makes the original XP DEUS. XP lists eight DEUS packs, built with the remote control, WS4 or WS5 headphones, or both, on a 9 inch or 11 inch X35 coil, and its DEUS page carries no discontinued notice. The DEUS runs one frequency at a time and carries XP's 5-year warranty. For simultaneous multi-frequency, XP's newer model is the XP DEUS II.

What is the difference between the XP DEUS WS4 and WS5 headphones?

The difference between the XP DEUS WS4 and WS5 headphones is the fit and where the controls sit. The WS4 is a light backphone headset, 86 g, with a removable control module. The WS5 is a full-cup headset that fits over the ears to cut outside noise, with its controls built in. XP describes both as rainproof, and both can run the DEUS without the remote. XP's WS5 page adds that the WS5 shows the battery level of the headphones and the coil.

Can I upgrade my original XP DEUS to a DEUS II?

Yes, you can move an original XP DEUS to the DEUS II with XP's DEUS and ORX Conversion Pack. It fits the stem you already own and adds an 11 inch DEUS II FMF coil with its own lower stem, a stem support and WS6 headphones with the WS6 Master control module, which runs the detector. A 9 inch version is also available. The WS6 is XP's earlier, non-ST headset, so XP's stereo audio features need an ST headset. Your X35 and HF coils keep working with your DEUS remote and headphones.

Is the XP DEUS good for beach detecting?

The XP DEUS works on dry sand and has a beach ground setting, but for wet saltwater beaches we recommend the XP DEUS II. Conductive wet salt sand is difficult ground for a detector that runs one frequency at a time, and the DEUS II's Beach and Beach Sens programs are made for it. On the DEUS, the X35 and HF coils are waterproof to 6 meters (20 feet), but the remote and headphones must stay dry. See our beach metal detectors.
