What does the copper ring on the Falcon MD20 probe do?

The copper ring on the Falcon MD20 probe sets the width of the detection beam. Slid back to the black line it gives a wide beam for scanning a crevice or a pan of concentrates quickly; pushed forward toward the red line the beam narrows, which is how you pinpoint a single speck of gold. Falcon's calibration check uses the same ring: turn the Auto Gnd Bal knob fully counterclockwise, start on the black line, and the unit should sound as the ring crosses red. Is the Falcon MD20 Gold Tracker waterproof?

The Falcon MD20 Gold Tracker is waterproof at the probe only. The 6 inch probe on its 5 foot cable is built to go into creeks, wet crevices and the water in your pan, which is where fine gold sits. The control box that holds the two 9V batteries, the speaker and the controls is not rated for submersion, so keep it dry in the belt holster or a pocket while the probe does the wet work. Do I need the 3-piece handle for the Falcon MD20?

You do not need the 3-piece handle to use the Falcon MD20, but it changes how you can use it. On its own the MD20 is a hand-held probe you work on your knees. The handle is a 28 inch foam-grip pole: the probe fits in the end and its cable threads up through the sections, so you can scan bedrock, reach under rocks and brush, or probe a cold stream standing up without putting your hand in. It comes in this bundle along with the headphones and belt holster.
