Open box or new: which Apex should you buy?

If the saving covers a pinpointer or a coil cover, open box is the better buy for most people, since the detector is functionally identical and still warranted. Buy new if you are giving it as a gift and want a sealed box, or if you plan to resell it later. If you want the larger 8.5" x 11" Raider coil for open-field coverage instead of the Viper, that configuration is only available new in the Garrett ACE Apex range. What the Apex does in the field

Multi-Flex gives you four single frequencies (5, 10, 15 and 20 kHz) plus two simultaneous multi-frequency modes, and eight channel shifts on each to move away from interference. In practice that means running multi-frequency in a park to hear coins and jewelry together, dropping to 5 kHz for deeper silver in clean ground, or stepping up to 20 kHz for small gold and thin chains. The 6" x 11" DD Viper coil is the tighter of the two Apex coils: it separates targets well in trashy sites and slips between roots and rocks, at the cost of some coverage per swing. Iron Audio and Iron Volume let you hear ferrous junk at reduced volume instead of silencing it, which is how you tell a bottle cap from a coin without digging every signal. Ground balance runs to 175 points, enough to settle the machine on wet salt sand, and the coil and lower shaft are submersible while the control box is rainproof. Built-in Z-Lynk wireless pairs with Garrett's wireless headphones and the Pro-Pointer AT Z-Lynk pinpointer so both alarms arrive in one headset.
