Who qualifies for the Garrett Axiom military discount
Active and retired military receive a 15% discount on the Garrett Axiom. The discount shows in your cart once you add the Garrett Axiom to it. Send a copy of your driver's license with the "Veteran" designation, or a certificate showing your name and branch of service, to support@seriousdetecting.com or text (844) 771-0707. We do not accept a DD-214. See every detector in our military discount collection.
About the Garrett Axiom
The Garrett Axiom is the pulse induction gold detector Garrett calls its most powerful PI gold detector, designed for gold, small metal targets and harsh environments including heavily mineralized soil and saltwater conditions. It uses Garrett's Ultra Pulse technology at an adjustable 1500 Hz pulse rate, with four search modes and advanced pulse timings that help it stay sensitive in ground that can overwhelm conventional detectors. Garrett lists it at 4.2 lbs (1.9 kg) with the 11 x 7 inch mono coil and cover, on a collapsing carbon fiber shaft.
Garrett Axiom search modes: Fine, Normal, Large and Salt
- Fine: the factory setting, for maximum detection of small, low-conductivity targets such as fine gold. It is also the mode most affected by ground minerals, hot rocks and salt water.
- Normal: very good detection across target sizes. It reacts less to highly mineralized soil than Fine, at the cost of some response on very small targets.
- Large: keeps strong detection of large targets while reducing small and medium ones, and is less affected by mineralized ground and hot rocks.
- Salt: designed for wet saltwater beaches. It may also help on salt beds and goldfields with high salt concentration, depending on moisture content, though Garrett suggests trying the other modes first inland.
Garrett Axiom ground balance, Iron Check and audio
- Ground balance: automatic and dual channel, with two independent readings, which Garrett calls Terra-Scan. Ground tracking can be set to Off, Slow, Medium or Fast.
- Iron Check: with a DD coil, Iron Check flags strong iron signals. Garrett describes it as a conservative function, and it works only with DD searchcoils, not mono coils. Garrett's Focused Core DD-FC coils combine a DD-style platform with Iron Check.
- Audio: PWM audio has a fixed pitch with proportional volume; VCO, the factory setting, varies both pitch and volume with the signal, and its tone can be shifted.
- Sensitivity and threshold: eight sensitivity levels with 6 as the factory setting; Garrett notes that the upper levels, 7 and 8, are extremely sensitive and may not be stable enough for many users and conditions, and are meant for experienced users. The threshold adjusts from minus 9 to 25.
- Interference: an automatic frequency scan cancels electromagnetic interference.
- Z-Lynk wireless: a built-in transmitter for Garrett Z-Lynk headphones, with a 17 millisecond audio delay. Wired headphones with a 1/4 inch plug connect directly, and a 1/8 inch plug needs an adaptor.
Garrett Axiom battery, charging and travel
A built-in 76 Wh lithium-ion battery runs the Axiom for about 16 hours, depending on settings. Garrett's manual gives 7 to 8 hours to charge from the supplied wall charger, with the detector switched off, and about 10 hours from a 12 V source. Garrett's Axiom booster pack takes eight AA alkaline or NiMH cells and adds 6 to 8 hours of operation; it powers the detector but does not recharge the internal battery. The carbon fiber shaft collapses to 25 inches (63.5 cm) and extends to 61.5 inches (156 cm).
Water and weather with the Garrett Axiom
Garrett rates the Axiom searchcoils and stem waterproof and the control box rainproof. Z-Lynk headphones are not for the water: Garrett rates its MS-3 headphones for protection against light rain and says not to submerge them. See our beach metal detectors.
Where the Garrett Axiom works well, and where it does not
Natural gold deposits in difficult, mineralized ground are where the Axiom belongs, for experienced prospectors who spend a lot of time prospecting and want a dedicated pulse induction machine. Picture an old goldfield in Western Australia with heavy iron mineralization, where a high-frequency VLF struggles to stay stable: the Axiom's pulse induction and Terra-Scan ground balance are designed for those conditions, so you can concentrate on repeatable signals instead of fighting ground noise. We would not recommend the Axiom for modern coins in public parks; the Garrett Vortex VX7 or VX9 fits that job. For tiny, shallow nuggets in manageable mineralization, the Garrett Goldmaster 24k can be the more economical choice. See our pulse induction metal detectors.
Getting started with the Garrett Axiom
Learn the Terra-Scan ground balance procedure before serious prospecting, and understand the four timings: Fine for small gold under suitable conditions, Normal as a general-purpose starting point, Large for certain larger or deeper targets, and Salt for conductive ground. Raise sensitivity gradually while the detector stays stable, and remember that Iron Check needs a DD coil and is not perfect metal identification. The common mistake is assuming pulse induction removes every mineralization and hot rock problem; it does not, and ground balance and timing still matter.
