    Best for

Highlighted icons show the targets, ground and experience level this detector is built for.

The Garrett Vortex VX9 is the flagship of the Vortex series, and this open box unit gets you the same detector at a discount. It runs Garrett's Multi-Dimensional Multi-Frequency (MD-MF) engine with seven frequency options, a three-tier Target ID scale with two ferrous scales for sorting iron, Thin Coins and Fast modes for hammered silver and competition hunts, and full submersion to 16 feet. Coin, relic, and beach hunters who wanted the VX9 but balked at the new price get an inspected, complete detector with Garrett's full 3-year warranty.

    What Open Box Means Here

Open box units are complete, inspected by our team, and fully functional, and this VX9 carries the same 3-year Garrett warranty as a sealed one. You save money for a box that has been opened, nothing more. Prefer factory sealed? The Garrett Vortex VX9 new is in stock too, and every other open box and demo detector we carry is inspected the same way.

Why the VX9 Is the Professional's Vortex

    • Three-tier MD-MF Target ID: in Multi-Frequency the display shows a non-ferrous scale plus two ferrous scales, so bottle caps and complex iron read as iron instead of masquerading as coins.
    • Seven frequencies: five singles (5, 9, 13, 18, 25 kHz) plus two simultaneous Multi-Frequency options, standard Multi and Multi-Salt for wet salt sand and surf.
    • Thin Coins and Fast modes: Thin Coins is tuned for hammered silver and small low-conductivity gold; Fast pairs quick recovery with reduced iron volume for trashy parks and competition hunts.
    • Three recovery speeds and Iron Audio: dial reactivity up to separate adjacent targets, and use Iron Audio to hear what a bottle cap or steel washer really is before you dig.
    • Submersible to 16 feet: the whole detector goes underwater, and Beach mode with Multi-Salt keeps it quiet on wet sand.
    • Built-in Z-Lynk wireless: pair Garrett MS-3 or other Z-Lynk headphones with no cord; headphones are sold separately.
    • Collapsible and light: 3 lb with the coil, collapses to 24.75" and extends to 56.75", with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery good for about 15 hours per charge.

Does the open box VX9 have the same warranty as a new one?

Yes. Garrett covers the Vortex VX9 with a 3-year limited parts and labor warranty, and that applies to this open box unit exactly as it does to a sealed one. The warranty runs from your purchase date with us as an authorized dealer, and we handle the paperwork if a claim ever comes up. Open box here means the carton was opened and the detector was inspected by our team; it is complete and fully functional. If you'd rather have a factory-sealed unit, the Garrett Vortex VX9 new is also in stock.

What's the difference between the VX9 and the VX7?

The VX9 adds the full three-tier Target ID scale with two ferrous scales, the Multi-Salt frequency option for saltwater beaches, the Thin Coins and Fast modes, three recovery-speed settings, and 25 kHz and 5 kHz single frequencies on top of the VX7's set. The VX7 is a very capable multi-frequency machine for coins and relics on land; the VX9 is the one to buy if you hunt wet salt sand, competition events, or iron-infested sites where recovery speed and iron sorting decide what you find. Both are submersible to 16 feet and share the same coils. Compare the mid-range model in our Garrett Vortex VX7 collection.

    Answered by Richard T. · September 2026

Are headphones included with the VX9?

No. Garrett ships the VX9 with the detector, 8.5" x 11" DD Raider coil, USB charging cable, arm strap, and quick-start guide, and the built-in speaker works fine on its own. The detector has Z-Lynk wireless built in, so the natural add-on is the Garrett MS-3 Z-Lynk headphones, which pair with one press and also carry audio from a Pro-Pointer AT Z-Lynk. For water hunting, Garrett's wired submersible Vortex headphones plug into the 1/8-inch jack. Both are in our metal detector headphones collection.

    Answered by John W. · September 2026

Can I use the VX9 in saltwater and how deep can it go?

Yes. The VX9 is fully submersible to 16 feet (5 meters), and Beach mode with the Multi-Salt frequency option is designed for wet salt sand and surf. Multi-Salt runs simultaneous frequencies that cancel the salt response, so the detector stays quiet on the wet slope where single-frequency machines chatter. Rinse the detector in fresh water after every salt session and keep the charging port cap sealed. Other machines built for the same conditions are in our beach metal detectors collection.

    Answered by Dan P. · September 2026

Which coils fit the Vortex VX9?

The VX9 uses the Garrett Vortex coil family, and all of them fit the VX5, VX7, and VX9 alike. The 8.5" x 11" DD Raider in the box is the all-purpose coil. The 5" x 8" DD Ripper is the choice for trashy parks and tight spaces, the 6" x 11" DD Viper splits the difference, and the 14" x 11" DD Reaper adds depth and coverage on open fields and beaches. All are submersible with the detector. See the full set in our Garrett Vortex VX9 collection.

How do you inspect open box detectors before selling them?

Each open box unit is unpacked, checked for completeness against Garrett's box contents, powered on, and function-tested by a member of our team who hunts with Garrett equipment. We confirm the display, audio, coil connection, charging, and all search modes work, then repack it. Cosmetically you may see minor handling marks on the carton; the detector itself is in new condition. Because the 3-year warranty, free shipping, 30-day return window, and price match all still apply, open box is simply the same detector for less.
