    Best for

Highlighted icons show the targets, ground and experience level this detector is built for.

An open box XP DEUS with WS4 backphone headphones and 11 inch X35 coil brings a light, wireless single-frequency detector with detailed control over Reactivity, frequency and ground balance to experienced coin and relic hunters who enjoy fine-tuning detector settings, at a discount, with XP's 5-year warranty. The WS4 control module on the headphones runs the detector, and the larger coil gives coverage on open ground.

About this open box XP DEUS

Open Box: Metal detectors with damaged or opened packaging, offered at a reduced price. Full manufacturer’s warranty included. Questions about a specific unit? Call us.

XP's warranty applies, the same as on a new DEUS: 5 years on the detector, 2 years on batteries, chargers and connectors. Every open box and demo detector we have is in our open box collection.

How the WS4 headphones run the XP DEUS

XP's WS4 backphone headphones carry a detachable control module that can drive the detector alone: it adjusts discrimination, sensitivity, ground balance, frequency, volume, Reactivity, tracking and programs, and shows the Target ID with the battery levels of the headphones and the coil. XP calls the backphones fully shower proof, foldable, compact and extremely lightweight; they weigh 86 g. In XP's WS4 MASTER configuration the WS4 module is the control unit, and XP's manual says performance is identical whether you are searching with or without the remote control. The module unclips from the headband and mounts on the stem with the WS4 stem support, and the WS4 clip jack adapter lets you connect your own wired headphones to the module.

The 11 inch (28 cm) X35 coil runs 35 frequencies from 3.7 to 27.7 kHz and carries its own battery. XP lists the S-Telescopic stem at 455 g and the 11 inch X35 coil at 470 g, against 370 g for the 9 inch; the WS4 backphones weigh 86 g. See our wireless search coils.

    About the XP DEUS

What we like about the original XP DEUS is its exceptionally lightweight wireless construction, fast target response and extensive adjustment options. XP calls it "the first fully wireless detector", and it helped establish XP's reputation for wireless metal detectors: the coil sends its signal over XP's own digital radio link, without a coil cable, to the control unit, which is the remote control or XP's WS4 or WS5 headphones depending on the configuration. Adjustable Reactivity, selectable frequencies, detailed audio and discrimination settings and ground balance controls make the DEUS appealing to experienced coin and relic hunters who enjoy fine-tuning detector settings, particularly on iron-contaminated historical sites.

One distinction matters before you buy. The original DEUS is a selectable single-frequency detector: it runs one frequency at a time. It does not use the simultaneous FMF multi-frequency technology found in XP's DEUS II, ICON and ICON-X. We would choose the original DEUS when lightweight wireless operation and advanced single-frequency control are the priorities.

Reactivity, discrimination and audio on iron-heavy sites

Picture an old farm field with iron nails and scattered brass relics. We would experiment with Reactivity and discrimination there while paying attention to short, repeatable non-ferrous signals. A good target can lie close to a nail, and when the coil passes over both objects their responses can interfere with one another. The DEUS cannot reliably detect every desirable target hidden among iron; iron masking remains a limitation.

    • Reactivity: XP's term for how quickly the detector responds to nearby targets, and one of the settings we would learn first, along with ground balance, discrimination, audio response and frequency selection.
    • Discrimination: reducing discrimination lets more questionable signals be heard, and on an iron-contaminated relic site we would experiment with it alongside Reactivity.
    • Audio: audio response is one of the settings worth learning, and on iron-heavy ground we listen for short, repeatable non-ferrous signals. No tone identifies an object with certainty: a deep coin, rusty iron and other metal objects can all produce confusing responses.

Where the XP DEUS works well, and where it does not

Iron-contaminated historical sites, relic hunting and inland coin hunting are where the DEUS is most interesting, because its control over Reactivity, frequency and audio gives an experienced operator room to work difficult ground. See more relic and treasure metal detectors. For regular saltwater beach hunting we would recommend the XP DEUS II instead, because its FMF technology provides a more suitable platform.

Water ratings differ by part. XP rates the 11 inch X35 coil fully waterproof up to 6 meters (20 feet). XP calls the WS4 backphones fully shower proof and rainproof. In this configuration the WS4 headphones are the control unit and are not designed for full submersion, so the complete detector is not built for submersion.

Original XP DEUS or XP DEUS II

The DEUS II adds simultaneous FMF technology and a fully waterproof detector platform, along with additional audio and operating capabilities. For someone who regularly searches saltwater beaches or wants simultaneous multi-frequency operation, those differences may justify choosing the XP DEUS II.

XP DEUS wireless design, weight and charging

The wireless design and the light telescopic stem keep the DEUS light, there is no coil cable to catch on brush, and the detector collapses for transport. Light weight is about comfort and portability, not depth or target identification.

The coil and the headphones each carry their own lithium polymer battery. XP gives about 15 hours for the X35 coil, depending on frequency and power, about 22 hours for the headphones, and about 3 hours to charge them together. XP rates operating and charging temperatures from 10 to 40 °C (50 to 104 °F).

One mistake to avoid with the XP DEUS

The mistake we warn about is confusing the original DEUS with the DEUS II. The original DEUS runs one frequency at a time and is not a simultaneous multi-frequency detector, and the frequencies available depend on the installed coil.
