The XP ICONX (also written ICON X) is a wireless, simultaneous FMF multi-frequency metal detector for detectorists who want the ICON platform with more control, through 6 factory and 6 user programs, 7 Reactivity levels, 0.5 point discrimination steps and a third single frequency at 28 kHz. It suits someone who moves between historical sites, parks and beaches and wants different setups ready for each. XP's ICONX pack holds the remote, the 11 inch FMF coil and the blue S-Telescopic Lite stem with a carbon middle part.

About the XP ICONX
What we appreciate about the XP ICONX is that it builds on the ICON's straightforward FMF platform while adding controls an experienced detectorist can genuinely use: more factory programs, more Reactivity settings, a third single frequency and finer discrimination adjustment, in the same light, wireless design. Someone who searches an older park one weekend and an abandoned farmhouse the next gets that extra flexibility without moving all the way into the DEUS II's more extensive control system. We would not say the ICONX detects deeper than the ICON; its biggest advantage is the additional control.
Like the ICON, the ICONX uses XP's simultaneous FMF multi-frequency technology, processing several frequencies at the same time. In a park where targets range from small jewelry to larger coins, FMF gives a versatile starting point, and it is just as useful when you move between inland detecting and a saltwater beach. FMF does not guarantee accurate identification of every target, because ground, target size, orientation and nearby metal all affect the response.
XP ICONX programs and key settings
- Programs: 6 factory programs (Field, Trashy Field, Forest, Park, Wet Beach and Beach & Surf) and 6 user programs, twice the ICON's number, so one setup for parks, another for historical fields and another for beaches can each stay ready. More programs do not improve detection by themselves; the advantage is convenience.
- Single frequencies, 4, 14 and 28 kHz: the ICON offers 4 and 14 kHz. For small brass objects, thin jewelry or other small, low-conductivity targets, 28 kHz may be a useful alternative, but it does not find every small target better. For general detecting we would begin with FMF.
- Reactivity, 7 levels (0 to 6): the ICON has 5 levels (1 to 5), so the ICONX adds adjustment at both ends. In a clean field a lower setting may help preserve stronger responses from some deeper targets; in a dense patch of nails a higher one may help separate closely spaced targets. We would not use the fastest setting by default.
- Discrimination and iron: a 28-segment multi-notch with audio and visual rejection, 0.5 point resolution in the ferrous zone (the ICON uses 1 point steps), bottle-cap rejection, an automatic silencer, an all-metal mode and 11 iron volume levels. Finer steps allow more precise changes, but rejecting more signals raises the risk of passing over a good object, so on historical sites we would begin with fairly open discrimination.
- Audio: PWM and SQUARE audio with stereo morphing, 6 audio settings including XP's enhanced audio curve, Pitch, 2, 3 and 5 tones or Full Tones. No audio setting identifies coins, jewelry or relics by itself; we would begin with the factory settings.
- Ground balance and sensitivity: Grab, Manual or Tracking ground balance and 25 sensitivity levels.
Where the XP ICONX works well, and where it does not
Relic hunting and historical sites are where the extra controls earn their place. On an abandoned farmhouse site a good target may lie close to iron; raising Reactivity may help separate closely spaced signals and opening discrimination lets more questionable targets be heard, but the ICONX cannot reliably find every good object hidden among iron. See more relic and treasure metal detectors. In an older park, target ID is useful but not a guarantee, so we would investigate questionable repeatable targets rather than rely on the numbers alone. Near the surf the ICONX is designed to support detecting in conductive salt sand, though saltwater and mineralized black sand can still affect stability; we would begin with a suitable factory program and adjust only when necessary. See our beach metal detectors.
Wading and underwater use with the XP ICONX
XP rates the ICONX remote to 1.5 meters (5 feet) for a maximum of 30 minutes with its original cap. For use deeper than that, XP requires its BH-02 bone conduction headphones with their waterproof connector, and with them XP rates the system IP68 to 5 meters (16 feet). XP's coil page rates the 11 inch FMF coil waterproof to 16 feet (5 meters), and XP's manual recommends avoiding heavy rain and extreme weather. Wireless headphones should never be assumed suitable for underwater use. See our waterproof metal detectors.
XP ICONX wireless design, weight and battery
The remote, the coil and XP's wireless headphones talk over XP's own digital protocol in the 2.40 to 2.48 GHz band, with 36 automatic channels and a latency XP gives as about 4 ms, so there is no coil cable on the stem. The blue S-Telescopic Lite stem with a carbon middle part weighs about 260 g against about 285 g for the ICON's stem, and folds to 58 cm (22.8 in) and extends to 130 cm (51.2 in). XP gives the ICONX's weight as about 710 g (1.57 lb) without the remote on the stem and about 830 g (1.83 lb) with it; the lighter stem helps comfort, not detection depth. The remote (365 mAh) and the coil (700 mAh) each carry a rechargeable lithium polymer battery, and XP gives about 11 hours for the remote, the headphones and the coil and about 3 hours to charge, with an operating range of 0 to 40 °C (32 to 104 °F). The sunlight-readable LCD has an adjustable, low-consumption backlight, and XP's Go Terrain app records finds and tracks routes with your phone's GPS. XP makes the ICONX in France, and it carries the Longtime label.
One mistake to avoid with the XP ICONX
The mistake we would warn new owners about is going straight to the most aggressive settings. On a historical property, maximum Reactivity, high sensitivity and heavy discrimination together can make the detector less effective at recognizing some deep or questionable targets. Start with a factory program, then change one setting at a time so you understand the effect of each adjustment.
Who we would recommend the XP ICONX to
The XP ICONX is particularly appealing to someone who wants XP's FMF technology with more advanced controls than the standard ICON. It is a strong candidate for coin hunting, relic hunting, historical sites and beach detecting, where the additional Reactivity settings, the 28 kHz single frequency, finer discrimination adjustment and extra user programs give useful flexibility. The biggest reason we like it is that it gives more control over difficult detecting conditions while keeping the light, wireless design and straightforward operation of the ICON platform. Our best metal detectors for coins guide covers more choices for park hunting.
XP ICONX or XP ICON
Someone who mainly wants a straightforward detector for everyday searching may find the standard ICON sufficient: it shares the ICONX's FMF technology, wireless design and 25 sensitivity levels, with 3 factory programs, 5 Reactivity levels and 4 and 14 kHz single frequencies. See the XP ICON collection. For maximum control over FMF operation, audio and specialized detecting situations, the DEUS II may be worth considering, although not everyone needs those additional capabilities. See the XP DEUS II collection and our guide Which XP DEUS II to Buy.

Compatible XP coils, headphones and pinpointer
- Coils: XP lists the DEUS II FMF coils (D22FMF, D28FMF and D3428FMF) and the HF2 coil (DELLFMFHP) as compatible with the ICONX. Someone who starts on the 11 inch coil and later wants to search dense iron or tight spots among rocks has room to add a smaller compatible coil, but we would check compatibility before buying: the original XP DEUS and the newer FMF platforms do not use the same coil system. See our metal detector search coils.
- Headphones: XP's ICON manual describes the WSA ST and WSA-XL ST wireless headphones for the ICONX. For underwater use XP specifies its BH-02 bone conduction headphones, which plug into the remote with a waterproof connector, and wired headphones connect through XP's ICON jack adapter. See our metal detector headphones.
- Pinpointer: XP's MI-6 pinpointer links wirelessly with the ICONX remote. See our XP pinpointers.
- Go Terrain app: XP's phone app records finds and tracks routes with your phone's GPS.
