The XP ORX with the 11 inch X35 coil is a lightweight wireless metal detector for coin hunting, relic hunting and general land detecting in parks and farm fields, made in France by XP. XP sells it as the ORX-28X35RC pack: with the larger 28 cm (11 inch) X35 coil it offers 35 frequencies from 3.7 to 27.7 kHz and runs one selected frequency at a time. Two factory Coin programs (Coin Fast and Coin Deep) and two Gold programs give you starting points, two user programs hold your own settings, and four Reactivity settings let you trade target separation against signal strength. The coil is waterproof to 6 meters (20 feet); the remote control is not waterproof. XP covers the remote and coil for 5 years.

Who the XP ORX with the 11 inch X35 coil is for
Not everyone needs simultaneous multi-frequency technology, extensive audio customization or a large number of search programs. Imagine someone who mainly searches old farm fields and parks and occasionally prospects for gold. The XP ORX may give them the capabilities they need without the learning curve of a more complicated machine, and we would rather recommend a detector that matches someone's actual interests than encourage them to spend more for features they may never use. In our experience the X35 coil is a sensible choice for someone primarily searching for coins and general relics, while the HF coils suit very small natural gold.
The ORX is not a simplified XP DEUS II, though. It operates at one selected frequency at a time; the DEUS II offers simultaneous multi-frequency operation. That is an important distinction, and it matters most on wet salt sand.
Coin Fast and Coin Deep in the park
XP describes Coin Fast as the program for coins and all types of targets with good performance on mineralized or contaminated ground, and Coin Deep as the one for low-mineralized, uncontaminated ground. Imagine an older park where coins are mixed with modern aluminum trash and rusty iron. The XP ORX gives you a numerical target ID from 0 to 99 plus an iron probability from 0 to 100%, discrimination in 99 levels, an iron tone you can switch on or off, and adjustable Reactivity. Those let you investigate different kinds of targets while adapting to the location. Someone who searches large parks or fields may spend several hours swinging the coil, so the ORX's light weight and telescopic stem matter as much as the settings.

Reactivity: target separation against signal strength
The XP ORX has four Reactivity settings (XP's values are 1, 2, 2.5 and 3). Imagine a fairly clean farm field where targets are widely separated: a slower response may be preferable, because maximum target separation is not necessary. Now imagine moving toward the remains of an old building, where the ground contains nails and other iron debris. Increasing Reactivity can help the detector respond more distinctly to closely spaced targets, but faster Reactivity can also reduce the strength of certain deeper signals. We would not use the fastest setting everywhere; what matters is understanding the trade-off between separation and response strength.
Old homesites and iron
Imagine an old property where the house disappeared decades ago. The ground holds nails, pieces of iron hardware and the occasional brass or copper object. The ORX's Reactivity and discrimination give you useful ways to investigate those conditions, and a smaller coil may help around dense metal debris. We would not suggest that the ORX can reliably identify every desirable target near iron: iron masking remains a challenge, and experience and careful coil control still matter. For other detectors built for this kind of site, see our relic and treasure metal detectors.

The three X35 coils for the XP ORX
| Feature | 9 inch X35 | 11 inch X35 On this page |
13 x 11 inch X35 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Size | 22.5 cm (9 in) | 28 cm (11 in) | 34 x 28 cm (13 x 11 in) |
| Frequencies | 35, from 3.7 to 27.7 kHz | 35, from 3.7 to 27.7 kHz | 35, from 3.7 to 27.7 kHz |
| Coil weight | 370 g | 470 g | 590 g |
| Coil battery (XP) | About 15 hours | About 15 hours | About 15 hours |
| Waterproof | 6 m (20 ft) | 6 m (20 ft) | 6 m (20 ft) |
All three X35 coils give the same 35 frequencies, built around five main channels with offsets, so the choice is about coil size and weight. The 11 inch X35 in this package sweeps a wider path on each pass than the 9 inch, at 470 g against 370 g on the end of the stem; the 13 x 11 inch is larger and heavier again. Each coil mounts on its own lower stem, and changing coils means changing the lower stem and pairing the coil to the remote by its serial number. XP lists the X35 and HF coils for the ORX; the FMF coils made for the XP DEUS II are not on XP's ORX compatibility list. For more coils, see our metal detector coils.
Saltwater beaches, freshwater and the remote
One limitation worth explaining is that the XP ORX is not a simultaneous multi-frequency detector. Wet saltwater sand is difficult because conductive saltwater produces a ground response that interferes with metal detection. The ORX has a salt mode (ground rejection from 00 to 25, switched on by holding a button for 2 seconds) to help manage those conditions, but we would not position it as the ideal choice for someone who mainly searches wet ocean beaches. For freshwater beaches and general land detecting, the ORX remains a reasonable option.
The X35 coil is waterproof to 6 meters (20 feet), and a submerged coil needs XP's aerial antenna. XP's manual says the remote control is not waterproof, so keep it dry; along a freshwater shoreline you may be able to detect while keeping the electronics out of the water, but we would not submerge the remote.
XP ORX, XP DEUS II or Minelab X-TERRA ELITE
For someone who regularly searches difficult historical sites and ocean beaches, the XP DEUS II has important advantages: its FMF technology offers simultaneous multi-frequency operation, it has substantially more audio customization and advanced settings, and it is fully waterproof with the appropriate underwater equipment. For someone who wants a fully waterproof detector with simultaneous multi-frequency technology for less outlay, the Minelab X-TERRA ELITE is also worth considering; Minelab rates it IP68 to 5 meters (16 feet). Not everyone needs those features. For someone who values simplicity, low weight and coin or gold oriented programs, the ORX remains worth considering. For other coin machines, see our metal detectors for coins guide.
