Can I use a regular metal detector on the beach?

On dry sand above the waterline, most land detectors with waterproof coils work adequately. In wet salt sand and the surf zone - where the best targets concentrate - single-frequency VLF machines generate constant false signals due to salt conductivity. The productive beach ground requires a simultaneous multi-frequency machine. Standard machines are also not rated for submersion, so wading into the surf risks damage. Do I need a fully waterproof metal detector for the beach?

If you stay on dry sand, a machine with a waterproof coil is sufficient. For hunting the wet sand and surf zone where targets concentrate, full submersion waterproofing is needed - wading into the surf with a non-submersible control box risks damage and limits where you can hunt. Most of the machines we recommend for beach detecting have full waterproofing rated to at least 10 feet rather than just waterproof coils. What accessories do I need for beach metal detecting?

Three things matter: a quality stainless steel sand scoop with good drainage, a waterproof pinpointer rated to at least 10 feet, and comfortable waterproof footwear for surf zone work. The sand scoop makes the difference between a 30-second recovery and a 3-minute dig in wet sand.
